AIBU to expect a local sports club not to perform their warm up activities in my road?

I live in a very quiet cul-de-sac, and every so often, on a weekend, members of the local sports club (which has extensive land that could be used for such activities, I.e. not on pitches Etc.) carry out pre-match warm-ups down the middle of my road, while shouting loudly, for about 15 minutes at a time.
This sets off my security cameras, as they get very close to my drive, which is quite annoying as it sets off multiple alarms.
It’s a nuisance, and has the potential to be even more so if anyone needs to use their cars to access their driveways, but this also adds to the annoyance of visiting teams on a Sunday, when lazy parents park their cars right up to both corners of the main road, making it impossible to see what’s coming up or down the main road that our road is off, with huge potential for accidents.
So: YABU get over it!
or
YANBU it would drive me up the wall, too - complain to the club!

I live on a private road which is on quite an incline. We had a running group who used to run up and down it for training in the evening during the winter. The street is not lit and it was very hard to see them as they sprinted up and down without paying attention. It was very dangerous and also very annoying. The leader of the group was given a stern talking to and they have now moved elsewhere.

A stern talking too ...

Are you unable to have a reasonable discussion? Probably would've had the same result, but would mean the culprit look less of a twat!

ApolloandDaphne · 07/01/2024 13:33

@Goodlard I was surmising that the talking to was stern. It wasn't me who spoke to him! If it was who i think it was who spoke to him stern would be too nice a description!

venusandmars · 07/01/2024 13:45

@Anyotherdude we had something similar with a 'bootcamp' training class adjacent to our house. The incessant shouting and counting was really annoying. Discussions with the 'bootcamp' leader and the local councillors sorted it out.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 07/01/2024 14:16

You have multiple alarms and triggers ? Why have you militarised your home ?

Anyotherdude · 08/01/2024 07:50

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Haha! Not intentionally! Normally only get an alarm once people step onto the drive and not if they are just walking past. In this case I think the flailing arms from whatever exercise (star jumps?) they were doing were alerting the camera (singular) many times…

Oh dear I read this and wondered if it was someone on the housing estate where my running club does a lot of its sessions!

If they are noisy I can understand your annoyance, we do try to be quiet when we are close to houses.

But I don't know why you think they are affecting access to and from driveways. if a car comes, they move, surely?

If they are parking badly, ask your council parking enforcement team to come and have a look. A few parking tickets might concentrate a few minds.

If it's a public road, it can be used by the public.

To drive on.

It is not a sporting pitch or an oval

And to walk and run (and cycle) on.

This post just illustrates the issues we have with the dominance of the car.

And even roads aren't enough for drivers, they have to use the pavements too.

Emm no.

You don't need a license to walk, run, cycle, roller skate, dance, or horse ride on a public road. You do need a license to drive a motorised vehicle on one.

Some of the private roads near are through routes only for members of the public were a license is not needed for their vehicle.

Oh, that's excellent news. I think I'll set up my tantric yoga class on your road. PM the address.

Why have you stated cameras (plural) and multiplexes in your OP then?

That's what people are going by!

Grimchmas · 08/01/2024 08:47

I've no idea why people are being deliberately stupid in their replies. It's a trend I've seen on mumsnet a lot recently.

OP I think it's reasonable to say that most people who chose to live on a quiet cul de sac would find this annoying, both the loud warm up in the road (not on the pavement, presumably) and the parking.

I'd write a polite letter to the club to begin with, asking them to remind their members and supporters to park responsibly (it is illegal to park that close to a junction for a reason) and considerately, and preferably in the club's own car park! I'd also ask them to move their warm up onto their own ground since it is causing a nuisance to residents and is unsafe for both the club members and residents. Then if it happens again I'd very politely and legally go for a drive around the block, "forget" something and go back to get it, go out again and repeat it until I got bored or they left.

If the parking was a problem that day I would stop my car and go and ever so politely loudly ask the group if that car is one of theirs and can they move it please because it is blocking your visibility, and its unsafe for you to pull out. If nobody claims it ask one of them ever so sweetly to come and see you out of the road. And repeat.

In lots of sports a pitch (eg an astroturf) will be booked back to back for games at the weekend. A team and its visitors won’t have access to the pitch until it’s their game time, and particularly if matches are running late, teams will try to warm up for their game where there is space. Then at their allocated time they jump on the pitch and play. I’m guessing this is why she gets people on her road- I’m finding it depressing that there’s the assumption that it’s men: players of both sexes require a warm up.

Roads existed before cars were invented. They are to allow movement, and public roads are accessible to everyone. I would argue that people running up and down a residential road have more right to them than cars parked on them- inconsiderate car parking would annoy me every weekend.

Grimchmas · 08/01/2024 08:51

Flickersy · 06/01/2024 13:29

It's not 'your' road. It's a public road.

If things in the middle of the road are setting off your security system, how on earth do you cope with traffic?

Adjust the system or turn it off.

It's not the club's road either. The middle of a public road on a residential street is not an appropriate place to gather a large group of people for 15 minutes. Park runs don't have their meeting spots in the middle of a cul de sac, yoga teachers run their classes in a park not in the road for good reason, you shouldn't deliberately congregate a group of people on a public road, no matter how quiet that road is, because a road is for vehicles to move along.

It's also not the club or their visitors' right to park dangerously on said road.

Anyotherdude · 08/01/2024 08:52

@kisstheblarney sorry, I didn’t intend to make the word camera in my OP plural - typo! It’s one camera in the porch light…

Security alarms should not be going off unless they are on your property Victor Meldrew

Cosywintertime · 08/01/2024 08:54

Can’t see how flailing arms set off the camer but a moving vehicle doesn’t. Sounds like something is wrong with your camera sensors. Unless you decided to exaggerate a bit to try to get answers to go your way and went too far.

and yeah, it’s not your road. Unless there is something you forgot to say.

Anyotherdude · 08/01/2024 08:57

@speedtalker you’re right - it was a women’s Hockey Team on a Saturday…
The parking is, AFAIK, visiting parents of team members coming to play junior rugby on Sunday morning. I did contact the club about the parking and it hasn’t happened since, but that might be because of the Christmas/New Year break…

We have a similar thing where we live on a quiet lane with only 2 houses. Villagers use it to teach their children to ride a bike, play ball games and endlessly walk their dogs up and down it off a lead. We do find it annoying as it sends our own dogs mad and also frequently obstructs us. We have however accepted that there’s nothing we can do about it.

Anyotherdude · 08/01/2024 09:03

@WandaWonder thats the point - they normally don’t go off unless a human is detected on the drive.
@Cosywintertime the camera has a setting for everything that moves, or you can choose “human” - which is what we have it set on…
Anyhoo - I’m quite prepared to be told I’m unreasonable if that’s what you all think - I don’t want to approach the club if the poll says I am unreasonable…

Overthebow · 08/01/2024 09:10

Is it a private road or a council owned one? Yabu unless it a private road.

speedtalker · 08/01/2024 09:16

As a member of a hockey club who has spent years travelling around to play, and facing the problem of warming up before games (often changing rooms are cold, you’re stiff after a long journey, and warming up is important) I understand this situation.
From my experience it’s rare to have to use residential streets to warm up. Often there is one Astro pitch, and surrounding sports fields will likely be muddy and grassy and full of eg rugby players and you can’t run onto an Astro pitch to play with shoes caked in mud, and you can’t warm up on muddy pitches when slipping about. I also think sport should be encouraged. Usually we try to warm up beside the pitch, or do laps around a car park. Often there might be a little athletics strip, or a tennis court. Teams don’t want to warm up on the road. So, reasonable action points I think you could take:

You could ask the club if they would be able to allocate a warm up area within the grounds. It might be some spectators of another sport spread themselves around the ground, or a few parking spaces could be cleared for a warm up. Visiting teams would appreciate this as warming up on a road will also have them constantly watching for traffic.

You could ask the club to encourage car sharing for visiting teams. Clubs should be trying to reduce their carbon footprint, and car sharing is a good way of doing this.

As been stated, you don’t own the road, and I think weekend sport is really beneficial to the health of society. Each week a fixture secretary or team captain will have an email conversation with their visiting team, and it’s perfectly possible when they confirm time and location to have it in their email an encouragement to car share.

Cosywintertime · 08/01/2024 09:19

Ok to summarise, it’s not very often, it’s only for 15 mins, you don’t have multiple cameras or alarms?

dangerous parking is a different thing, you can contact the club about that, but your op is highly misleading, which I suspected it was as you knew you were unreasonable.

pontipinemum · 08/01/2024 09:25

The parents parking and blocking your view when trying to get onto the main road would annoy me. Could you maybe ask the council about getting some cones for match days? Probably have to be you or a neighbour that put them up but it'd be safer.

No the kids spending 15 mins on my road to get their team spirit riled up wouldn't annoy me
