Sorry for posting AIBU, but could this cut need stitches??

As said in the title I know this isn't AIBU but urgent lol.
I slipped in the ice this morning (just as a car drove by- the shame 😳) and fell hard on my knee. It feels more bruised than anything but there is a small chunk of skin removed. That's what's at the top of the wound in the pic and I can't decide whether or not stitches could be needed? To add to my shame I'm now wearing about with bloody jeans at my knee 🙈

I would just cover it with a dressing, if there is a bit missing it would be difficult to stitch and I don't think it's worth the hassle of a trip to A&E.

Tilllly · 06/01/2024 10:06

Nah, clean and cover

Luxell934 · 06/01/2024 10:06

Just clean it and make sure there’s no dirt
or glass in it and put a plaster on.

Coffeespill · 06/01/2024 10:07

No stitches required I'd say

Notimeforaname · 06/01/2024 10:07

No. It's a graze. Clean it. Leave the air at it because I had one the very same from falling in the summer. I kept cleaning it and kept plasters on it for 2 weeks and it wouldn't heal . When I let it breathe, it healed up almost immediately..

Notimeforaname · 06/01/2024 10:07

Of course put a plaster on at first but do eventually leave it to the air when you can..

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 10:07

Thanks all, I've done the best I could with baby wipes and when I get to the shops I'll get some salvon etc and do my best cleaning it out. This is typical me haha and couldn't face an A&E trip! 🙈 don't do well with things like this when it's my body

Ouch but no. Need a good clean and a dressing.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 06/01/2024 10:08

I'd also clean and cover with a dressing. You've sort of 'mashed' your knee, but it's not a very deep wound. I'd also expect some swelling and stiffness in the next few days, as your body tries to heal itsself.

Hope it gets better quickly and you can rest it a bit.

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 10:10

Thanks, I think I was in shock when I first looked at it and it made it seem worse than it is. I was convinced I could see fat tissue and all sorts 🤣🤦‍♀️

Former nurse here - no stitches required .. you’ve given it a good whack though .. there isn’t a lot of flesh in that area so it’s also going to be pretty sore ..make sure it’s clean .. I keep Dettol wound spray in the cupboard .
Put an absorbent dressing on it initially until it stops bleeding then take off and allow the area some air to avoid it becoming “soggy”

OneLollipop · 06/01/2024 11:02

Just to point out (as I often do because many people aren't aware this exists) - many places have NHS Walk In/Urgent Care centres which are able to treat minor injuries and are much more suitable for non-emergency things than going to A&E 🙂 So if anyone did need stitches, you could see if you have one of those locally.

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 13:19

Thanks, I'm definitely feeling it now and it's quite swollen. My local urgent care isn't open on weekends unfortunately so if I couldn't wait till Monday it would like have to be a&e

Ouch, as others have said, but prepare for some nice bruising to come out over the next few days.

It's deffo appearing already along with some swelling to top it off. Got a cold compass preparing in the freezer 🤣

What cut?

There's a slight graze.

Are you usually a drama llama?

ManateeFair · 06/01/2024 14:40

It’s a nasty graze but no stitches or A&E visit required. I sympathise!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/01/2024 14:55

You can use a bag of frozen peas to ice and re freeze( obviously don't serve them up afterwards!
Ibuprofen for pain and swelling if you can take it
I hope you're more comfortable soon
I've had some spectacular falls in my time!

Newuser75 · 06/01/2024 15:02

I'm obviously not a doctor but to me no, that wouldn't need stitching. There isn't anything to stitch. It's a graze. Give it a clean and if it's sore take some paracetamol.

m00rfarm · 06/01/2024 15:07

I fell into my knee and ended up with a chipped bone.

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/01/2024 15:08

It's a minor graze (albeit I'm absolutely sure is extremely sore), there's nothing to stitch there, and it certainly isn't an A&E job based on the cut alone, or the GP even to be honest unless you genuinely suspect you've done damage to the knee and are not able to move it.

I'd rinse with bottled water or tap if there is none, ensure it's clean, use an antiseptic wipe on the skin around the wound (not in it) dry and whack a plaster on.

ASAP get the leg raised and ice it to reduce swelling and bruising and take an ibuprofen. The sooner you ice it the less it will swell/potentially bruise so I'd just grab a bag of frozen veg to be honest, cover in a teatowel and get it on there.

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 20:38

It's getting quite swollen and bruised now, trying to stay off it as much as I can and see how it is Monday.

Thanks for your opinion but you don't know my medical history. I have a condition that affects my legs and I've had multiple surgeries so naturally I'm going to be more anxious around these issues.

No it doesn't need stitches. Clean it, smear some vaseline on and apply a giant sticky plaster.

Balloonhearts · 06/01/2024 20:43

No, there's nothing to stitch, its a scrape. Just douse with antiseptic and let it air out. You'll get an impressive bruise and it'll scab over quickly enough. Painful looking though.
