Sorry for posting AIBU, but could this cut need stitches??

As said in the title I know this isn't AIBU but urgent lol.
I slipped in the ice this morning (just as a car drove by- the shame 😳) and fell hard on my knee. It feels more bruised than anything but there is a small chunk of skin removed. That's what's at the top of the wound in the pic and I can't decide whether or not stitches could be needed? To add to my shame I'm now wearing about with bloody jeans at my knee 🙈

Ouch! Poor you. Can you take ibuprofen for the swelling and put an ice pack on it? It's going to be very stiff for a while.

Thanks, yes I've taken ibuprofen and have also been putting a cold compass on every couple of hours

That looks really swollen. Maybe you need an x-ray?

Rockschooldropout · 06/01/2024 20:52

Can you post a pic of your other leg for comParism? Is that pic looking down at your leg ?

Janieforever · 06/01/2024 20:54

Op, no, there is nothing to stitch really there, I nearly took my knee cap off last summer, I tripped going up so steps and slide along a path, it was fine. It’s a graze, but I get how scarey it can be when hurt.

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 06/01/2024 20:54

Ouch that looks painful. As others have said no stitches needed, but you will need to keep your leg elevated and an ice pack is a good idea. Do give it a good clean.

Hope you feel better soon and it might need checking next week if you think you e damaged the knee.

FUPAgirl · 06/01/2024 20:54

Ouch that looks sore! Take care OP, I hope it heals quickly!

I've been wondering tbh but really can't face a&e over the weekend. I'm trying to manage it at home as my local urgent care is closed over the weekend. If things worsen/stay as they are I'll phone first thing Monday

Ouch. Cold will definitely be your friend, to reduce swelling. Now it's clean, keep it covered with a dressing and let your body do its thing. Definitely don't put Vaseline on it!

CecilyP · 06/01/2024 20:59

It’s a nasty graze but there’s nothing there to stitch. It could do with a good clean and then a proper dressing if you have one, rather than an Elastoplast.

Pics aren't great but these are the best I can get lol. The thing that's concerning me is that I have a lot of pain at the side of my knee and kind of behind it especially when walking. It also feels a bit hot

Do you maybe suffer from some health anxiety? You’ve given it a knock, and grazed it, give it a clean and shove some germonlene on, it will be fine.

You’ve possibly got some soft tissue damage from falling/twisting but rest, ice and elevation should be enough. Just keep an eye on it.

Rockschooldropout · 06/01/2024 21:15

Don’t panic - you’ve given it a whack and half by the sounds of it .. comparing it to your other keg is not as swollen as I thought .. worse case scenario is you’ve torn a ligament .. failing that it’s likely you’ve got a bit of fluid round the area from the bang …
keep your weight off it … rest with your knee elevated .. take painkillers … it will REALLY hurt ..
if it seems swollen still on Monday or is too painful to walk on .. try and get an urgent gp appointment or go to urgent care .. I understand you’ve got a history of leg issues which means you are going to be more worried … get a cushion under your knee .. get your leg on the sofa and rest it …

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 21:15

J*anie,
*
I commented earlier explaining that I have a medical condition involving my legs and have had many surgeries which increases my worry about things like this. I already find it difficult to walk so I worry about being further limited.
I probably do have an element of health anxiety tbh but in this case it's increased by my existing condition

Leg not keg fgs 🙈

CherryBerry99 · 06/01/2024 21:23

Thanks all, just taking it easy atm and using a cold pack

It will be stiff and painful, you're going to have a cracking bruise and there is a lot of cartilage in the knee. Walking will hurt for a few days probably but it's not a serious injury. Give it a good covering of savlon to zap the infection, apply cold compress and rest it, that's all you can do for it.
