What is this on DD neck?

12 year old and noticed this. It looks like a patch. I’m really worried. I will speak to GP on Monday

If others are seeing what I'm seeing OP, then it just looks like a dirty neck, but obviously it's not, as I'm sure you would know seeing it in the flesh as it were. What does your DD think it is? Does it bother her? Is it itchy? What drew your attention to it?

TiredMum30 · 05/01/2024 22:58

I've seen similar on my DD, it washed off but took a little rubbing. She'd obviously not been washing as thorough as she said she had 🤦‍♀️

Jumpingpogosticks · 05/01/2024 23:01

Has she worn a new coat or hoodie?
I was freaking out when DD had something similar a few years ago, just turned out to be her new coat, left black markings that looked like bruising

LightSpeeds · 05/01/2024 23:04

It looks a bit like a bruise.

If it's a brown patch that looks like dirt, it could be tinea versicolor (Nizoral shampoo will get rid of it).

Onceuponaheartache · 05/01/2024 23:04

It looks like a bit of eczema. When the skin thickens and dries it can take on a darker colour. We get this with dd a lot on her hands.

Try not to worry!

As for nosebleeds, has she had a cold or anything recently? If so they are more likely to be caused by sniffing/blowing a lot and bursting blood vessels. Also high/low air pressures can cause them...I suffer a lot from them at this time of year

AfraidToRun · 05/01/2024 23:05

My guess ( a complete guess) is low iron. It affects the way you clot, causes dey skin and can cause easy bruising. I've had low iron on and off since I started my periods and take supplements when my blood levels get low.

My mum herself was very anxious about my health which means I now tend to avoid Dr's as I assume it must be nothing. So do try and manage your anxiety as best you can.

Thisilldo · 05/01/2024 23:05

Good god. No wonder you can’t get a GPS appointment.

RubyWinehouse · 05/01/2024 23:06

I honestly can't see anything unusual

Phonedown · 05/01/2024 23:07

Do you have health anxiety OP? Wait for a week and observe any changes. If it has not gone away then call your GP. But other posters are right. Your reaction does seem a bit disproportionate and might be worth having a think about why this might be and if there is anything that could help you to cope better when things like this happen again.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 05/01/2024 23:08

I'm more concerned that you jumped immediately to skin cancer because she's got a bit of dry skin and a faint mark that could be dirt.

BestBadger · 05/01/2024 23:11

Is the skin there a bit thicker than usual, is she on any medication? (including the contraceptive pill) There are lots of things that can affect anywhere there are folds in the skin, almost all are easily treated. It looks a little bit like acanthosis nigri, which my sister had, but very mild. Also treatable and very unlikely to be a sign of cancer.

Mufflepuff · 05/01/2024 23:11

Skin cancer is SO rare as to be non-existent in children. It does sound as though anxiety is getting the better of you.

Falkenburg · 05/01/2024 23:12

This is rather an extreme reaction to what could be dirt, a stain or a bruise.

PurpleWisteria1 · 05/01/2024 23:14

Assuming it’s not a dirty neck (I used to get this as a teen from clothing / sweat and cheap jeweller - I was washing regularly but not actively scrubbing my neck area) then any unexplained bruising must be investigated.
I am surprised by posters saying it’s nothing and do you have a health anxiety. It may well be nothing but unexplained bruising should always be followed up.

Mirabai · 05/01/2024 23:15

Do you have health anxiety OP?

OhwhyOY · 05/01/2024 23:19

To those saying your reaction is over the top - my friend had a cough and was feeling very tired, plus a couple of swollen lymph nodes. She thought it was nothing and ignored it for a few weeks until her mum made her go to the doctor. It turned out to be lymphoma. If she hadn't gone when she did who knows where she'd be now? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your daughter @hotmailgmailoutlook , most likely she's fine or has low iron as a PP suggested. But if you're worried don't let anyone fob you off, get her checked out. No one here can tell you from a hard to see picture whether you're overreacting or not.

Ny24 · 05/01/2024 23:19

Actually dark circles on the neck can be caused by an underlying health condition. Not anything as serious as cancer though.

Could be worth getting her blood sugar checked out. The medical term is - acanthosis nigricans.

Any other symptoms?

justasking111 · 05/01/2024 23:27

My son had some like this it was dye from a new hoodie that was leaching when he got warm. Some clothes these days are definitely not colorfast. I had a pair of leggings that gave me black patches on my legs. Gave me quite a fright.

hotmailgmailoutlook · 05/01/2024 22:45

It's the skin change. I am looking for reassurance to stop worrying about skin cancer etc. Patch look really unusual. I will try to take another photo tomorrow. I will speak to GP in the morning. she is also having lots of nose bleeds which I put it to dry air in the house etc. Now this, freaks me out

It doesn't look like skin cancer at all. My mum had that and I've seen a couple of friends who have had it as well. It's nothing like that so don't worry.

idontlikealdi · 05/01/2024 23:43

Fake tan or bad make
Up?

Wolfpa · 05/01/2024 23:48

Looks like dye/ grime. I am on the side of washing her neck properly before you do anything else

theelectricnorth · 06/01/2024 00:03

Did she ask you about it or did you notice it?

RJnomore1 · 06/01/2024 00:07

The last time my youngest had very similar to that it scrubbed right off - they may be showering but they’re not always on top of everything that needs a scrub…

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 06/01/2024 00:15

That is nothing like skin cancer.

Spyral · 06/01/2024 00:18

Try applying hand sanitiser (it's the alcohol content that works) and rubbing gently on the affected area, then clean off with a wet flannel or similar. If it's some kind of surface mark this should remove it.

If it doesn't go, then it could be bruising and you'd need to figure out what might have caused/be causing it, which could require asking a GP if your dd can't think of what that might be.
