Why do I keep waking up sweating?

for the last few weeks I’ve had problems with being BOILING hot during the night. Like to the extent I’m covered in sweat and it’s really unpleasant. I wear cool pjs and have normal bedding- I thought it might be because my dog sleeps on top of the bed and she’s basically a giant hot water bottle but this problem has only started over the last few weeks and she’s slept on my bed for the last 2 years so I don’t think it’s that. Sleeping with the window open hasn’t made a difference either. Weirdly I’m normally a freezing cold person and I don’t seem to get these hot flushes during the day- it’s just at night I wake up boiling hot. Sometimes it’s several times a night and then other times it doesn’t happen for a few days. I love being warm usually but this is a horrible type of hot- it’s really unpleasant and I don’t know why it’s happening

Does this sound like stress? I’m stressed about my work right now but I’ve been more stressed before and never had this problem before. Does anyone have any advice to stop it? I had to wash my hair when I woke up last week because it was clean when I went to bed and greasy with sweat when I woke up. I’m also not menopausal because I’m only 25!

Or now that I’m thinking about it, is it possible it’s the flu or some kind of winter bug? I’ve been otherwise fine apart from some dizziness over the last few weeks which I put down to a bug or work stress because it’s not been that bad at all

I woke up last night and was certain the hearing was on but it wasn’t and my window was open.

For me it was menopause.

Some infections still make it happen now I am on HRT

HopeAfresh · 03/01/2024 21:59

Could be quite a lot of things. It’s worth having a chat with your doctor.

gamerchick · 03/01/2024 21:59

For me it's the slide into meno. Sick of it tbh.

Yes you're young but people go through it young on occasion. Maybe you should see your GP OP.

Icannoteven · 03/01/2024 21:59

I had this when I had a tooth abscess. I’ve also heard that it can be a side-effect of ssri’s. It can also be a symptom of lymphoma though, so maybe see a GP (easier said than done, I know).

Mirrorballsocial · 03/01/2024 21:59

Are you on any medication?

Fitandfree · 03/01/2024 21:59

Could it be any medication you are taking? Antidepressants fir instance?

IcarusFlies · 03/01/2024 22:00

I don’t mean to worry you but this can be a symptom of lymphoma. My relative mistook this for menopause when she was in her early 50s.

Having said that, I also had a phase of waking up very very hot in my early 20s and it passed by itself.

Would definitely recommend a trip to the GP.

SapphireOpal · 03/01/2024 22:01

I have this due to antidepressants but there are lots of things it could be - low blood sugar for instance. I'd see your GP, they can run tests to see what might be going on.

DancingintheSpoonlight · 03/01/2024 22:02

I have this on Sertraline

DelilahBucket · 03/01/2024 22:04

Have you been drinking a lot of alcohol since it started? If I drink too much I wake up sweating in the night, or if I've been drinking for several days back to back, like over Christmas, when I cut out alcohol it's a withdrawal symptom.

Torchdino · 03/01/2024 22:04

As it's new for you I'd second seeing a GP. It could be the menopause, it could be something serious as PPs have said (unlikely but worth getting checked in case), or it could be nothing.

Blarn · 03/01/2024 22:06

For me it was stress. I was under extreme stress, I'd wake up hot and drenched in sweat from the top of my head to my toes. As soon as I woke up and took the blanket of to de-sweat I was cold and sometimes had to dry the sweat off to warm up and get back to sleep. Antidepressants stopped the night sweating although did make me generally sweatier.

BCBird · 03/01/2024 22:08

Do u eat a lot of carbs? They give me the hot flushes? Best get checked out with GP to put ur mind at rest.

Fleeceybeaa · 03/01/2024 22:14

I have this periodically too, started when I was in my 20s. Yes it is when I'm particularly stressed or anxious.

WittyUser · 03/01/2024 22:14

For me ironically the night sweats happens when it’s too cold - I wrap myself more tightly up in the duvet, which eventually would mean I get too hot and wake up in a sweat. Never happens during mild/warmer weather. So having the heating come on to prevent it getting too cold actually helps.

TomatoSandwiches · 03/01/2024 22:15

Could it be linked to your cycle?
I have a few nights like this a week or so before my period starts.

Alcohol does that to me

I swing from freezing to what feels like a rolling boil.

Sorry about the double posts!

eyespartyparty · 03/01/2024 22:23

Try wearing thin socks in bed. Really helps for me.

justasking111 · 03/01/2024 22:27

Time to visit the GP if you've had it for a while. Blood tests rule out a lot of things.

PriOn1 · 03/01/2024 22:31

I get that way when overeating rich foods at Christmas. Not sure if that’s a possibility for you, OP?
