Why do I keep waking up sweating?

for the last few weeks I’ve had problems with being BOILING hot during the night. Like to the extent I’m covered in sweat and it’s really unpleasant. I wear cool pjs and have normal bedding- I thought it might be because my dog sleeps on top of the bed and she’s basically a giant hot water bottle but this problem has only started over the last few weeks and she’s slept on my bed for the last 2 years so I don’t think it’s that. Sleeping with the window open hasn’t made a difference either. Weirdly I’m normally a freezing cold person and I don’t seem to get these hot flushes during the day- it’s just at night I wake up boiling hot. Sometimes it’s several times a night and then other times it doesn’t happen for a few days. I love being warm usually but this is a horrible type of hot- it’s really unpleasant and I don’t know why it’s happening

Does this sound like stress? I’m stressed about my work right now but I’ve been more stressed before and never had this problem before. Does anyone have any advice to stop it? I had to wash my hair when I woke up last week because it was clean when I went to bed and greasy with sweat when I woke up. I’m also not menopausal because I’m only 25!

Are you taking CBD oil or gummies?

creusa23 · 03/01/2024 22:41

Please go and see your GP for a blood test just in case - I had this exact thing and it turned out to be leukaemia (I was also in my 20s at the time and had no other symptoms beyond being a bit tired). It will almost certainly end up being something completely innocuous but just in case it's something serious you're much better off knowing about it early!

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 03/01/2024 22:42

Have you got a memory foam mattress? I didn’t realise mine couldn’t be flipped and spent two nights drenched in sweat before finding out the base material (that I was sleeping on after turning it) radiates your heat back into the bed. Was awful!

Beckafett · 03/01/2024 22:43

Oh I've been having this recently I feel like I'm massively over heating! But I'm a cold person in the day.
Hope you get sorted, I'm going to check my heating isn't coming on overnight.
I thought it was menopause symptoms but interesting to know more from here.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/01/2024 22:45

" I’m also not menopausal because I’m only 25!"

That's not a given Sad. I knew someone who hit the menopause at 15.

For me ironically the night sweats happens when it’s too cold - I wrap myself more tightly up in the duvet, which eventually would mean I get too hot and wake up in a sweat. Never happens during mild/warmer weather. So having the heating come on to prevent it getting too cold actually helps.

This happens to me too! Dh thinks I'm bonkers, but when I wear pjs to bed, it doesn't happen!

OP I would see a GP because as others have said, it can be a symptom of lymphoma.

MyFirstLittlePony · 03/01/2024 22:53

Where are you? It is unseasonably warm in the South , so if you swapped for a winter duvet it might just be that!

Somatosensational · 03/01/2024 22:57

You need to have a blood test. Night sweats can be a symptom of an underlying condition.

Noseybookworm · 03/01/2024 23:00

It is possible to have premature menopause, although unlikely. I would definitely make an appointment with your GP and ask for blood tests. This should tell you if you have any sort of hormone imbalance.

Drenching night sweats are a major flag for cancer. Have you lost any weight without trying?

A family member's only symptom was drenching night sweats, they went to their GP and got referred for tests. It turned out to be Non-Hogkins Lymphoma. The night sweats literally disappeared after her second chemo. She had eight rounds of chemo them maintenance retuximab as follow up. Get checked out ASAP.

DesparatePragmatist · 03/01/2024 23:09

I had this in my late teens and 20s. Such drenching cold sweats my mattress got mildew.

It turned out to be caused by depression.

Definitely get to the GP!

Edited

They are a potential symptom of cancer (and TB) but this is rare. They can also be caused by stress, anxiety, hormonal issues, autoimmune issues, viral illnesses and thyroid problems to name a few.

OP, definitely see a GP ASAP but I wouldn't be too worried at this point.

Em308 · 03/01/2024 23:38

Somatosensational lists the possible causes accurately - for me my drenching night sweats are caused by Type 2 diabetes and / or perimenopause. It’s horrible, I hope you get to the bottom of this.

Extratoebeans · 03/01/2024 23:38

I had this, went to the doctors as it seemed like menopausal hot flushes (had experienced them due to being put into a hormone induced menopause) it turned out to be I was extremely anaemic, and had other low levels. I was given an iron infusion and once it had settled they stopped. Definitely get checked, as it could be something similar.

Oneearringlost · 04/01/2024 11:53

My bf ( now DH) had drenching night sweats for a while, in his 20s, we worried it could be something sinister, like TB or something else, all tests came back normal and they just stopped. Never had them again🤔Better to just check with your GP, but it will probably just be "one of those things". Try not to worry, OP, but the sooner you sort it, the sooner you can be reasurred, all being well.

ChefsFloozie · 04/01/2024 11:58

Low vitamin D can cause night sweats, especially common this time of year. Would deffo recommend full blood screen

tabbymctwat · 04/01/2024 12:02

Just to add to the ever growing list of things this could be - I had night sweats when I was pregnant! It's often linked to something hormonal, so periods, pregnancy, menopause etc. are all quite common causes.
