I think the milk should go in after.
I think dunking biscuits is gross
I think a teabag in a cup is fine as opposed to bags in a teapot
I think sharing a tea bag across different cups is gross
I don't think it matters if you put the teabag in the sink (and bin later)
I think tea leaves as opposed to bags are stupid
I don't like flavoured tea
I like Tetley. Hate Earl Gray.

IMO YABU on some points and not on others. Each to their own.

Catza · 03/01/2024 10:58

I think milk in tea is gross but agree that putting a teabag in a teapot is odd. That's what tea leaves are for so you are not even consistent with your own argument.
Tea bags in a sink will result in murder in my house. The bin is just there, stop being lazy (and staining the sink).
Why is it gross using the same bag in two mugs? The tea isn't very good but it certainly isn't gross to transfer between two containers.
ETA: Tetley is commonly referred to as NHS tea in our house. Makes the weakest tea ever. In every hospital I worked in, being gifted a box of Yorkshire tea is the best present.

LenaLamont · 03/01/2024 10:59

Sharing the bag between cups is no different from using a teapot where the teabags are communal. If one person wants very weak tea, it’s sensible share a bag.

A teabag in a mug is fine. A teapot is better if you want to drink multiple cups of tea.

Talipesmum · 03/01/2024 11:00

I think the milk should go in after (unless you make tea in a teapot, then pour it into the milk in your cup). Basically, milk should never touch the teabag.
I think dunking biscuits is fine but a big waste and nasty if they disintegrate.
I think a teabag in a cup is fine and so are bags in a teapot.
I think sharing a tea bag across different cups is fine if the cups are all clean and not too big, and you’re careful about it being strong enough.
I don't think it matters if you put the teabag in a little pot on the side (and bin later) but don’t leave stuff hanging around in the sink cos that’s annoying.
I think tea leaves make nicer tea than most teabags but they are a lot more faff and teabags are fine.
I don't like flavoured red fruity teas much but other herbal teas are nice especially pukka ones despite the twee names.
Dorset tea is the best. Like Earl Gray.
Black tea is surprisingly ok if you’ve run out of milk but I need to add lemon or a bit of sugar to stop it being too tannin-y. Not the same drink as tea with milk though.

(ETA full stops sorry!)

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 03/01/2024 11:12

Catpiss weak tea should be banned.
Earl Grey is nice if done properly (no milk).

Sunnydays0101 · 03/01/2024 11:22

I think the milk should go in after.
After for me, but practice originated when using fine bone china cups and it was thought the very hot water would damage the cups.

I think dunking biscuits is gross
I would only do this if no-one else was around but invariably the biscuit falls into the cup and ruins the tea and biscuit.

I think a teabag in a cup is fine as opposed to bags in a teapot
Think it looks awful and would never offer someone a cup of tea with a tea-bag stuck in it, that’s what tea-pots are for.

I think sharing a tea bag across different cups is gross
Wouldn’t do this.

I don't think it matters if you put the teabag in the sink (and bin later)
Absolutely gross and stains the sink which results in extra cleaning. Bin straight away.

I think tea leaves as opposed to bags are stupid
Tea-leaves properly brewed give a much better taste/brew.

I don't like flavoured tea
Love peppermint tea and sometimes chamomile tea.

I like Tetley. Hate Earl Gray.

Grumpynan · 03/01/2024 11:37

I hate tea bags, loose tea in a pot, tea bag in a cup is gross.

dont have milk in tea, but would add it after I’ve poured the tea if I did.

i don’t like fruit teas much, or rose petal teas, I love herb teas

mostly drink Yorkshire tea, made with leaves in a pot, or better still whittard breakfast. Love camomile or ginger teas

Mirrormeback · 03/01/2024 11:39

I have a little bowl the teabags go in

It's really not that hard

No need for teabags to ever go into the sink

If find that really grim plus it stains

ManateeFair · 03/01/2024 11:40

Just have your tea how you want.

I don't really understand why people get so fascinated/worked up about other people's tea preferences.

It's a bit of British tea fun

letmechange · 03/01/2024 11:44

I think the milk should go in after.

Yes because unless you are making your own tea, you don't know how strong it is going to me and you might want to adjust the milk.

I think dunking biscuits is gross

Yes, soft sloppy biscuit, and a cup full of wet mush at the bottom.

I think a teabag in a cup is fine as opposed to bags in a teapot

Yes, what's the difference really? Can anyone really taste the difference in a blind test, I wonder?

I think sharing a tea bag across different cups is gross

I don't think gross exactly, but I doubt everyone's tea would end up strong enough?

I don't think it matters if you put the teabag in the sink (and bin later)

This doesn't bother me either.

I think tea leaves as opposed to bags are stupid

Our family used to use them when I was a kid, but I can't be bothered now.

I don't like flavoured tea

I quite like a good herbal.

I like Tetley. Hate Earl Gray.

Agreed.

00100001 · 03/01/2024 11:44

Surely sharing tea bags across cups is exactly the same as putting them in a teapot which is presumably perfectly acceptable to you? Confused

RonObvious · 03/01/2024 11:44

The surprise, unrequested cup of tea is the greatest gift that one human can give to another.

letmechange · 03/01/2024 11:45

Mental note to drink more tea. I like it without sugar, which I can't say for coffee.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 03/01/2024 11:46

Teabag and boiling water should go in first, and then the milk added once it's mashed.

1 teabag DOES NOT make 4 mugs of tea EX MIL!!!!!

Ponoka7 · 03/01/2024 11:47

So if I like very weak tea and I'm literally just dipping the tea bag in a clean cup with boiling hot water, why is it wrong to then put it in another clean cup and pouring boiling hot water over it? The milk in the second cup will be added afterwards. I only drink weak black tea, usually rooibos. It would mean using twice as many tea bags.

quisensoucie · 03/01/2024 12:03

YABVU for starting a thread about tea.😀
Eeeww!
Coffee every time (and the occassional mug of Marmite...)!

BashfulClam · 03/01/2024 12:05

Tea is minging!

PuttingDownRoots · 03/01/2024 12:06

I am intolerant to tea... it makes me throw up.
Yes, this is a real thing.
Yes, I am British.
No, I don't want a coffee every time you have a cuppa because its not thirst quenching in the same way.
Yes, I do miss tea.

Coolhwip · 03/01/2024 12:08

YABU. I hate coming down to mess in the sink. Fine if you live alone.

The surprise, unrequested cup of tea is the greatest gift that one human can give to another.

I’m a one cup a day person, but my MIL literally goes into paroxysms of delight when I give her a surprise, unrequested tea, so I think you’re right.

Sylver75 · 03/01/2024 12:14

Milk always goes in last.

My aunt always insisted on loose leaf tea which we never had in our house so we would cut open a teabag so there was some leaves floating around in her cup and she was happy then thinking she had got what she wanted.

I will always use one bag to make two mugs of tea as I don't take mine very strong.

My favourite tea is Barry's Tea (I'm Irish) and I don't like Earl Grey, it tastes like perfume to me.

Ignorance is bliss 😂

RaraRachael · 03/01/2024 12:29

Definitely milk in afterwards otherwise how can you tell how much to put in - I judge mine by the colour.

Dunking biscuits is disgusting. It was never done where I grew up in Scotland but when I visited my English XMiL (who liked to think she was quite posh) for the first time, she said "Aren't you going to dunk your biscuit?" - I didn't even know what she meant,
