About considering buying a Peloton bike?

So I think we can afford it (I'll do some maths in the next hour of so) BUT I've never done spinning. I'm a runner but a) the peloton tread is super expensive b) I do struggle to find the time to go and run 10k
So I'm looking for something I can do in bursts of 10-20 between meetings

My neighbour had one delivered yesterday in a big branded transit. They were there several hours setting it up, if you don't mind the whole street knowing then go ahead, anythung but discrete. I saw a thread in America and they can't give them away.

Grin I've seen people on Facebook who are distraught when they didn't get the branded van!

I’d second getting a second hand road bike and a turbo trainer, then use zwift or rouvy. They have training plans on them. If you like it, you could then sell the bike and trainer on and get a peloton. If you don’t you can at least make your money back by selling on. I get the impression second hand pelatons are hard to shift.

I use a turbo, and as someone who loves running outdoors it’s harder to motivate using a stationary indoor bike.

I'd be mortified. I'm the only one who gets Tesco. Everyone else is ocado, I feel like a peasant

We use a Nordic track, it was cheaper than a pelaton and has lots more outdoor ‘classes’ which are filmed all over the world - I regularly cycle through Thailand, Iceland and loads of other countries. I much prefer it to following a spin class but it’s still a great workout - and I’ve done over 4000 miles on it so value for money wise I think it’s been pretty good

Ginandthings · 03/01/2024 10:38

i have a Schwinn 800IC, you need your own tablet but can use the peleton app, the bike was 1/2 the price of a peleton. I prefer the Jrny app as you can cycle different locations for longer rides.

Trevorton · 03/01/2024 10:39

I have one. For me it is all about the community and the feeling that you are in a class with other people. I joined a peloton FB group and they organise rides which we can all do together. I think if you are a committed person who exercises then this may not be for you. I only get motivated by the class content, the music and perhaps if online "friends" are doing a ride, I need that bit extra.

If you live on the South Coast there's a fairly new one being sold on Facebook marketplace for £625

Cycling outdoors you take your life in your own hands, Motorists hate you, so do pedestrians if you dare have the audacity to use a cycle route they are walking on.
The UK hasn't got the infrastructure for cycling, l have long given cycling up, same with my son, it's nothing but a miserable experience and l don't miss it.

Snowpaw · 03/01/2024 10:46

I've got a Spinstream bike - much more affordable and a huge range of classes. I'm really enjoying it.

puncheur · 03/01/2024 10:52

Get a decent second hand road bike and a used smart trainer (Elite Suito is good value) and a Zwift subscription. Then you have the advantage that you can also ride it outside. Zwift is fantastic and super sociable, especially the racing and challenge ride side of it. Now that the COVID bike boom is over there are loads of fab bikes available cheaply.

Ifailed · 03/01/2024 10:52

get a bike that you can ride on the road and a turbo-trainer that you can us inside with your bike.

Skyla01 · 03/01/2024 10:52

I am also a runner, but currently pregnant and not enjoying cold / dark / wet / icy running so much. I got a second hand spin bike for £200 (obv not as fancy as a peloton bike but does the job) and the Les mills app (£10 a month) for rpm spin classes online. Love it!!! However a few years ago I used to go to Les mills spin classes in the gym fairly regularly so knew I enjoyed them. Peloton is an awful lot of money given you're not sure if you would enjoy it? However, I've always found spinning a nice adjunct to my running training, especially if you pick up a running injury.

LividCake · 03/01/2024 10:53

I loved Peloton.

My ex got it in the divorce.

If you can afford it, it's so much more than a stationary bike. And absolutely agog at the people who say "just ride a normal bike". Oh do fuck off. I live in a hilly place, it's monsoon weather, I'm four stone overweight (see ex and divorce) and have a long hours job and sole care of a small child. I'm as likely to ride a normal bike as I am get to the moon.

But if I had the Peloton still I could use it while small child was asleep. Yes, it's expensive and cliquey, but that's part of the pleasure of it. I'm currently wearing my Peloton leggings which is as close as I get to exercise these days. (They're really comfy and have pockets).

Catza · 03/01/2024 10:55

Does it need to be peloton? We are looking into getting an air bike as loads of them are on facebook marketplace for under £200. We both have gym membership but spinning classes are at awkward times for us.
We also have an under desk treadmill helping us getting the steps in while working.

Skyla01 · 03/01/2024 10:56

Ps. My other half has a turbo trainer with road bike & swift app. I tried it a few times but I much prefer spinning. He's on his bike every night, loves it. You might want to try a few options in the gym first?

christmaspawpaws · 03/01/2024 10:57

Look some of us don't want to ride outside!
Cycling outside and spin classes are totally different
I love the chatter, the community feel, the fact I can pick tabata or music or structured training to improve my FTP, the different instructors, finishing work and being on the bike within 10 mins. Picking weights or spin, doing a stretch class straight after. It's like a gym in my home

I have absolutely no desire to cycle, I don't enjoy it. But I do love spin classes. There would be zero point in me getting a bike with a turbo trainer because it's totally different

BiddyPop · 03/01/2024 11:03

Dd is a track cyclist for summer and also uses the bike for winter fitness for hockey. She got a zwift- basically a frame that attaches instead of the back wheel and links to an app. Much cheaper than peloton and has various programmes through the app changing the resistance of the gears to suit the workout. So her racing bike is set up with that all winter.

I know we had a more basic frame before, which allowed changing gears through a normal gear change mechanism but no tracking or other stuff. (Her racing bike doesn't have a gearing system - she changes gears by changing cog wheels before different types of race....).

chatenoire · 03/01/2024 11:06

PS I barely know how to ride a bike (have had stationary ones though) so no outdoor cycling for me!

I absolutely adore my peloton. Being perfectly honest the cost kept me very engaged to begin with, I felt I had to do classes to justify having it. Now I am completely addicted to it. I get up early to do a class everyday and feel so strong both physically and mentally because of it.
I would recommend whole heartedly! My favourite instructor is Cody - he is so funny, motivational and down to earth.
My favourite are the spin classes, but I also love the strength, yoga and meditation.

sleepyscientist · 03/01/2024 11:24

Vitad · 03/01/2024 09:43

You could start with a cheap spin bike and just the app, I use that as I can’t afford the bike but would be a good way to see whether you like spin

This is how we started with ours. Then sold the spin bike for a peloton. OP have a look on market place or peloton refurbished

NonSequentialRhubarb · 03/01/2024 11:28

We have one and if you will definitely use it, it's fantastic. We couldnt go to the gym (long distance away, small child, not in town to add it into a work day) and having the bike in the house has made us actually exercise, as there's no excuse for not hopping on for 20-30 minutes at some point.

The classes are really good and pitched at a variety of levels and durations. The bike itself is very robust and I find it comfortable enough and easy to adjust (I share it with my husband who uses very different settings).

OneTC · 03/01/2024 11:36

I'd buy a bike and a turbo trainer. Can do everything a peleton bike does but can go outside in the summer if it takes your fancy and if it never does, and one day you want to sell it, you'll be selling it in broadly the condition you bought it

I think the idea behind peleton is great btw but limiting it to the hardware is stupid

MissSmiley · 03/01/2024 11:57

I've just got off my peloton bike, had it three years, have run previously and had only done the odd spin class at the gym but I love it. So much so I'm planning to get the tread too this month and do both. I used to hire a treadmill when my kids were little and used it loads.

DrRichardWebber · 03/01/2024 12:05

I absolutely love my peloton bike. The total cost per month for us is £93 (the cost of the classes plus we put it on Klarna), me and my husband both use it meaning a monthly cost each of £46, way cheaper than any gym membership around here.

It works for us because we both work from home and have young kids, so can jump on between meetings or after the kids are asleep. It’s especially good when this weather is so awful.
