To think if you like a Christmas gift you would have tried it on, worn it by now?

DSS's mum asked us to buy him a very expensive pair of designer trainers for Christmas. We checked and doubled checked that these were the right ones and it was what he wanted.
Christmas Day came and he was delighted when he opened them, we double checked and reassured him he could swap them / return them if he didn't like them, changed his mind etc.
it's now the 3rd of Jan and they have yet to come out the box, let alone out the house. He's been out for dinner, out to a party, out to the pub - plenty of occasions to wear them and still nothing.
He has form of doing this with clothes, but we sometimes think it's just laziness and won't wear things if they need ironed and has a few brand new with tags tops in his drawers and once found one still in the bag!
AIBU to think it's a complete waste of money and if he actually liked them he would have worn them by now?
He is 16 and not a sneaker head, so not collecting them for the future.

YABU. Maybe those occasions or those outfits are not what he wanted to wear them for, even if the weather where you are has been suitable for trainers. It's only been a week.

Lizzieregina · 02/01/2024 23:05

Some people take ages to wear new things (me) and some people strip off and put the new things on right after they open the wrapping (DH).

YABU.

I bought my daughter a Lululemon jacket and she hasn’t worn it yet. She’s coveted it for 18 months. Shes currently savouring the fact that she owns this holy piece of (expensive) fabric. The joy isn’t only from wearing! It’s not odd at all that he hasn’t worn them yet - he will when it’s the look he wants.

BashfulClam · 02/01/2024 23:05

I got a pair of boots I loved. Not worn yet as not been the right time/ocassion.

Gingernaut · 02/01/2024 23:09

For the young'uns, the kudos in owning a pair of trainers is in the ownership not the wearing

As soon they're worn, they are no longer 'box fresh'

Some 'roadmen' have developed a special, rather painful walk to avoid creasing the shoes

Gowlett · 02/01/2024 23:12

I hold onto “special” new things until I’m ready to wear them.

Hop27 · 02/01/2024 23:18

Completely understand that it's the thrill of the chase and finally owning them.
But generally if he likes something it's straight on, but things you can tell he's not as keen on stay with the tags on or until he can ask his dad to iron.
I know everyone is different, but didn't buy them for them to sit in the box in his room. I was doubtful that they were his style, but was reassured time and time again that he wanted them.
Mind you he got new Adidas for his birthday as they are yet to see the light of day...but they are for school apparently 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yabu, I got a pair of trainers & a dress for Christmas and I haven’t worn either yet.

ActuallyChristmas · 02/01/2024 23:22

My DH loved his Uniqlo gilet (or vest as they weirdly call them) but didn’t wear it for over a year. He often does that with clothes

Hiddendoor · 02/01/2024 23:26

I have a new jumper, got it for Christmas. I actually really struggled to wear it the other day because I love it so much. Hard to explain the thought process without it coming out like absolute nutbar behaviour. But effectively I knownince I've worn it a good few times I'll have to wash it and I don't want to shrink it.

Hop27 · 02/01/2024 23:26

But would it be tried on at least?

Exactly this. Sometimes you want to delay the ‘first’ experience of your new item rather than rush into it.

AllAroundMyCat · 02/01/2024 23:35

I had a hat for Christmas... haven't had the need to wear it yet but I will do.

BeReadySoon · 02/01/2024 23:35

It can be an ADHD / ASD thing too. My husband bought me a pair of knee high boots I wanted one Christmas and I didn't wear them until June. Now my colleagues laugh at me as I wear them all the time except during a heatwave!

Testina · 02/01/2024 23:41

“or until he can ask his dad to iron”

Jesus wept. He’s 16.

BadlydoneHelen · 02/01/2024 23:48

Maybe he doesn't want to get them dirty so is waiting for better weather before wearing them out.

InAPickle12345 · 03/01/2024 00:26

There's an issue with creasing trainers, lots of people that are into their trainers will really only wear them for very special occasions and very short periods of time.

Once they're creased they might as well be damaged in some peoples eyes, I bet you this is what's going on.

Fionaville · 03/01/2024 00:28

Nothing my DCs or DH got for Christmas has been worn yet. I often get new clothes or shoes and don't wear them for weeks too.

Marblessolveeverything · 03/01/2024 00:45

Why would he need to try them on? If it's a brand he has the sizing will be the same. My 16 year old would keep them for wearing at some stage, possibly an event with mates.

toomanyleggings · 03/01/2024 00:48

Dd10 got football boots for Christmas. Only just tried them on today and was dancing about in them. She was spoilt at Christmas I think so prob only just getting round to being interested in them

ZodGilla · 03/01/2024 00:50

I've got

Pair of jeans
Pair of boots
Pair of pjs
Necklace

All in packaging still from Xmas.

I love them all, I've just not reached for them yet.

pizzaHeart · 03/01/2024 00:54

He probably reached for something old automatically without thinking. Starting to wear something new requires conscious effort. Teens don’t like making efforts.

Hop27 · 02/01/2024 23:26

No, my DH has to be told to try on new styles of clothing if I buy them. Sometimes he’s produced something from the back of the wardrobe that he’s had for years. Decided he doesn’t like it and had to be told that they won’t take it back now at Debenhams

UsingChangeofName · 03/01/2024 01:12

YABU.
I haven't worn anything I got for Christmas yet.

Spomsored · 03/01/2024 01:21

I haven't even opened all my boxes/bags/bars of chocolate yet!

I also got new (waterproof) walking boots but have decided the weather is just too wet and muddy for them. I don't want them looking 'worn' immediately
