To think if you like a Christmas gift you would have tried it on, worn it by now?

DSS's mum asked us to buy him a very expensive pair of designer trainers for Christmas. We checked and doubled checked that these were the right ones and it was what he wanted.
Christmas Day came and he was delighted when he opened them, we double checked and reassured him he could swap them / return them if he didn't like them, changed his mind etc.
it's now the 3rd of Jan and they have yet to come out the box, let alone out the house. He's been out for dinner, out to a party, out to the pub - plenty of occasions to wear them and still nothing.
He has form of doing this with clothes, but we sometimes think it's just laziness and won't wear things if they need ironed and has a few brand new with tags tops in his drawers and once found one still in the bag!
AIBU to think it's a complete waste of money and if he actually liked them he would have worn them by now?
He is 16 and not a sneaker head, so not collecting them for the future.

Why doesn't he iron his own clothes?

You seem to be hunting for a grievance here.

It is unreasonable to dictate how someone uses a gift. He was delighted to receive it so that should be enough reason to think he is happy with his present. What he does now is up to him.

Praps that’s not how they do things in their family. If any ironing is done here, I do it. Other household members could do it but I’m happy too, just as I’m more than delighted that the DH is our bathroom cleaner

My kids have to know how to do all the life skills so they can care for themselves if it's just one person's job how do they become good at it? Or are they learning ironing is woman's work.

My DS got new trainers for his birthday last month, he's only worn them a few times and only when he's going somewhere and he won't be walking outside. They are totally white (air force 1s) and so doesn't want them ruined in all the wet weather we've been having. He's been wearing his old pair. I know once the weather improves he'll wear the new ones instead. Maybe it's the same issue? The weather has been so awful!

ManateeFair · 03/01/2024 11:34

YABU. Just because he hasn't immediately put them on that doesn't mean he isn't grateful for them. You're being a bit weird about this. I assume it's because you're looking for a reason to gripe about your partner's ex, as she was the one that asked you to get them for him.

TokyoSushi · 03/01/2024 11:36

I do this, sometimes I just like looking at things in their brand new condition for a little while.

GettingStuffed · 03/01/2024 11:37

My husband bough me a sweatshirt which i love for Christmas, I just haven't had the chance to wear it yet.

BananaSpanner · 03/01/2024 11:40

I bought a new pair of trainers in the sale, I love them and plan to wear them a lot but I haven’t yet as we have had so much rain, everywhere is filthy muddy. Don’t want them to look a complete mess after one wear.

Sartre · 03/01/2024 11:59

Perhaps he’s saving them for a special occasion? He might want to keep them fresh for something in particular.

disappearingfish · 03/01/2024 12:04

YANBU. Just stop buying him clothes.

My teenage boys take ages to wear anything new.
We will buy in the shops and then I can never get them to try it on once we get home, they rarely fit, but can't be taken back because they've taken so long to find the ..... courage? Energy? Desire? To try it on.

As for a Christmas present...they are all still in a pile on the living room floor, we will put them away nearer to school starting time. And then they might start to get their heads around the idea of wearing the stuff.

New trainers (white?) It has been raining virtually solidly here since Christmas. You can only wear them in good weather or they are ruined. Plus have to get our heads around the idea of wearing new shoes which aren't (yet) as comfy as the old ones.

TempName247 · 03/01/2024 12:22

Weird he hasn’t at least tried them on tho

Toddlerteaplease · 03/01/2024 12:30

The weather has been awful. I'd o my wear brand new shoes on a dry clear day.
