The Christmas decorations I mean.

I'm just sitting here looking at them and thinking about how it's almost 12th Night, New Year is over etc. etc. and it's nearly time to take everything down and I realise I can't actually be arsed.
They aren't actually in my way. They look pretty and cheery. The weather is foul and everyone is ill and/or miserable. Why not just leave them until next month - or until it snows?
(So I can get some proper festive pics of my outdoor lights 😂)

Its such a bland miserable time of year. I want my pretty winter lights and sparkles up a bit longer.

Candlemas anyone?

I really think I'm gonna do it. Who's with me? Let's keep the festive cheer going 🎄

@Catza have you tried asking him to change the setting to turn off earlier?

No, we are new to the area. After seeing a thread on here of someone whose neighbour politely asked them to turn their flashing lights on a constant setting and it turning into WW3, I didn't feel like picking beef with my own neighbours.
We use blackout curtains for now which does make it difficult to wake up in the morning. Hopefully, they will be ready to take the lights down by the weekend.

I am certainly not “incredibly annoyed”. I couldn’t actually give a stuff what others do just personally find wilting Christmas trees and tawdry Christmas decorations after the event more depressing.

Stand by Candlemas most have never heard of it unless you are a very devout Christian I guess with an interest in old festivals.

My Christmas decorations are not "tawdry" thank you.

Nor is my tree wilting.

My house is not a nightclub after hours or a circus big top after the event. It's perfectly tidy and clean and the decorations look exactly as nice as when I put them up.
I think you are very rude.

Or maybe you just have terrible Christmas decorations 😂

Do whatever makes you happy OP. I make sure my house has non festive fairy lights all year round as I love the look. Have a few indoor plants with lights on

But as much as I LOVE Christmas, I have several trees and tons of decor.. I can't stand it being up after NYD. It leaves me cold. But that's me!

@TheaBrandt
my tree isn't wilting nor are my decorations tawdry. Maybe you need to buy a better quality tree & less tawdry decorations

TheaBrandt · 03/01/2024 12:17

My tree is totally wilting 😀. I dunno it’s a time and a place for me. So I love cold white wine…but not for breakfast. Christmas stuff when it’s not Christmas- no thanks.

@Catza

🤞🏼🤞🏼for the weekend.

but most people aren't as odd as many posters & their families/friend/neighbours.

my friend had a machine that sat on the front lawn and made it look like it was snowing on his house. Not really my thing, but did look kind of pretty.

his neighbour asked if he could move it/change the beam so it didn't go on her house. So he did. Then a few days later she asked if he could make it motionless. Which made it pointless. He moved it again and did something else to make it cover even less area of HIS house. She was back again & said it was still affecting her epilepsy.

🙄🙄if she'd said that in the beginning he'd have just turned it off.

just talk to him, most people don't turn things into WW3.

Crazycrazylady · 03/01/2024 12:28

God.. I hate them anytime after the 27th. I left them up this year till new years as we had guests but they came down the morning of the 1st!!

Crucible · 03/01/2024 12:37

Mine are all staying up til Candlemas on the 2nd. And when I take them down I'll be buying a huge bunch of flowers in the most riotous colours I can find, to cheer up my home. It helps with the blandness of the house when you finally strip it of Christmas and signals the start of spring.

@TheaBrandt

then maybe look after your tree better?

the point you seem to be missing (well one of them anyway) is that it is still Christmas. It's a period of time, not a day.

TheFifthTellytubby · 03/01/2024 14:13

We left ours up until Candlemas just after the lockdown Christmas/New Year of 2020/21. It was nice for the first week or so after Epiphany, but after that the water in the tub the tree was sitting in started to smell a bit off (the tree itself was fine) and the other decorations just got dusty. We were glad to clear it all away when the calendar rolled around to February! I'm glad we tried it, though, as we'd been talking about it for years.

@TheaBrandt
"Also going on about “Candlemas” is somehow incredibly annoying"

So which is it?

Anyway just because Candlemas isn't in your orbit doesn't mean that's the same for everyone.

Oh and my tree is still lovely and green, no dropping needles as it was freshly cut and is in water. And no tawdry decorations in this house. Heaven forfend!

TheaBrandt · 03/01/2024 14:18

Not to me (or everyone I know actually ) it’s not. It’s early January. 12th night is the usual deadline for most people. It all gets abit Miss Haversham otherwise but your house you do you I guess. Onwards and upwards! Bring on the spring.

flapjackfairy · 03/01/2024 14:23

every year I say that I am leaving my tree up indefinitely but as I have it in a big bay window and live on a main road I always bottle it ! If i could put the tree in a corner away from view I would go for it.

DewHopper · 03/01/2024 14:24

Imnotarestaurant · 02/01/2024 13:46

My tree will be coming down at the weekend but I’m leaving some fairy lights up until it’s not so dark and depressing.

Me too!

Jessieshome · 03/01/2024 14:29

Absolutely, totally agree with you, it's incredibly depressing out there right now. I struggle with the long dark nights and relentless rain. I think there is a non-Christian/Christmas tradition of bringing tree foliage and light in to homes through the dark winter months anyway. I'm definitely going to keep some lights up and a bit of twinkle, but will take the tree down as it is totally in the way!
