The Christmas decorations I mean.

I'm just sitting here looking at them and thinking about how it's almost 12th Night, New Year is over etc. etc. and it's nearly time to take everything down and I realise I can't actually be arsed.
They aren't actually in my way. They look pretty and cheery. The weather is foul and everyone is ill and/or miserable. Why not just leave them until next month - or until it snows?
(So I can get some proper festive pics of my outdoor lights 😂)

Its such a bland miserable time of year. I want my pretty winter lights and sparkles up a bit longer.

Candlemas anyone?

I really think I'm gonna do it. Who's with me? Let's keep the festive cheer going 🎄

Up to you! I've just taken mine down this morning and am glad to return to normal. I love Christmas and the decorations, but it all starts to feel a bit jaded and sad to me if they are still up after NYD.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2024 15:00

Sorry can’t stand Christmas tat after it’s over. Just looks tawdry and depressing. Ours will all come down this weekend.

Notlikelysaidthedragontothefly · 02/01/2024 15:08

I was of similar ‘f*ck it!’ mindset except it was to take them down the day after Boxing Day. Having hosted everyone on a chaotic Christmas
Day, my FIL staying with us for 6 days- after cleaning his soiled bedsheets (I know he’s old, he probably couldn’t have helped it) I was finished! Down came the decorations and the house cleaned!
But I hope everyone here manages to enjoy a calming and peaceful new year 😊

LoobyDop · 02/01/2024 15:19

I’m going to leave the lights up until Candlemas. I took the tree down today though- it was all crispy and brownish and sad-looking.

piscofrisco · 02/01/2024 15:21

I'm taking ours down today and it's made an already dark and depressing day even worse-but they are in the way and it's the only time I've got to do it, so today it is. If you can keep yours up for longer and want to then you should!

piscofrisco · 02/01/2024 15:24

I have got a lot of new scented candles to light however and some nice bright dried flowers that I got at a market before Christmas that look quite cheery. And DH just went out and came back with a nice big new houseplant, so there's that I suppose Grin

MaryHinges · 02/01/2024 15:25

Mine are staying up til 5th. Then tne spring garlands are going up 😀

FreebieWallopFridge · 02/01/2024 15:28

I left mine up well into feb one year. Zero fucks given.

F1ymetothetoon · 02/01/2024 15:38

Mine went back in the loft this morning but it's such a miserable wet day here today I'm kind of wishing I'd left them a few more days!

romany4 · 02/01/2024 15:43

My birthday is mid January. I leave my tree up until then.
I love Christmas and fairy lights so I hate taking them down

EdithStourton · 02/01/2024 16:01

Genius idea to leave the lights up a bit longer. I'll drape them around to cheer the place up after the tree goes - it'll probably irritate DH but he has annoying habits so we'll be quits.

Somepeoplearesnippy · 02/01/2024 16:13

Decs and tree are down but my fairy lights stay up 365 days a year in the hall, living room, dining room, study and outdoors. I don't turn them on that often but there is nothing better for lifting a gloomy evening or low mood than a host of twinkling lights. Similarly a random gathering of friends or family becomes a party when you add fairy lights.

CatamaranViper · 02/01/2024 16:15

My outside lights will stay up until we have a dry weekend when I can take them down safely. Though I have turned them off now

Notquitegrownup2 · 02/01/2024 14:51

We leave ours up for a while. I'm with you, ours go up in the second half of December so I like to have a months worth of twinkles.

We did have a neighbour come around one year to see if we'd died of carbon monoxide poisoning, as they couldn't understand why else we would still have a tree in the dining window!!

😂

I'm going to take mine down this evening. It's a bit sad really as my tree looks beautiful, i'd taken so much care over it but it can't stay up forever. I've been to the shop and bought some yellow roses to brighten up the living room, and a new picture for the wall, so there's a bit of newness going on. I have decorative lights around my fireplace all year round which aren't christmas lights as such, but will switch them on for a bit of twinkliness. I'll light a couple of candles later too, just to cheer myself up on this dreary day.

elp30 · 02/01/2024 17:25

I used to have jalapeño string lights in my kitchen that stayed up year-round until the bulbs died out.

I'm thinking of buying some new ones and putting them up. I loved how cheery they made me feel.

If you want to keep Christmas lights on in your home, OP, knock yourself out. It's your house so your rules!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 02/01/2024 17:26

Go for it. My place looks like Halloween year round!

My house does have a strong Victorian vibe which plays well in October when I go all out on the Halloween decor for the entire month.

Nowadays I just keep my Wiccan altar out all year. The rest not so much.

DDs room is pretty much permanently Halloween. She's definitely my kid 😂

Whatever makes you happy.

I usually de-Christmas things sometime between the 30th and 3rd. I don’t de-winter though. From the beginning of October I have extra candles around, soft throws and blankets thrown over the arms of chairs and sofas, more cushions and extra lighting (lamps). It’s so dark, cold and grim that I feel the need to create a cosy den.

Lzzyisgod · 02/01/2024 17:41

I have lights up permanently in our conservatory as I like to sit in there all year round but the tree and proper Christmas stuff went away today. Always have tea lights round the fire in the winter too.

I don't think I could keep everything up much longer myself but the lights make everything so cosy

Yes. I do this too. Love my furry throws and you can never have too many cushions.

We are keeping our trees up until the weekend, but I bought a load of battery tealights on timer last year, so they come on around 4pm and flicker away until around 10pm by which time we’re in bed. Makes everything feel cosy and not so hard once the trees come down

Aroundthewaygirl · 02/01/2024 17:58

A friend of mine left her tree up all year long. She would put a large throw over it and pull it off at Xmas time. It was very bizarre.

Ok. That IS a bit odd. Like those oddballs who wrap the whole tree in clingfilm - lights, decorations and all -and store it in the garage until next Christmas. 😂

Can I canvass this thread for opinions? I have a small twig tree I want to leave up for a bit longer. It is decorated with the following:

  • tiny gold baubles
  • tiny green baubles
  • clear glass baubles
  • gold and bronze stars
  • three glass birds- large, medium and small

I’m thinking if I take the stars off, but leave the baubles and birds on, that can be “wintery” but not “christmassy”- can I get away with that?
