To call in sick tomorrow?

sh0rtbread · 01/01/2024 19:22

I’ve been quite poorly since Thursday evening.
Started with cold shivers, body aches, fever and now I also have a cough. My head is still very heavy. Shortness of breath too. I have no energy to do anything. Also have no appetite. I’ve not showered in days which is pretty gross & when I put on a wash today, I felt so exhausted had to lie down shortly after.

I work from home but just don’t have the energy to be productive as I still feel quite unwell. This is the worst I’ve felt in a very long time. I will be contacting my doctors tomorrow once they’re open but have been having lemsip since Thursday evening.

I’m just worried about work thinking Im not really sick, with it being the first day back after the Christmas break.

If you’re sick, you’re sick. Unless you have form for calling in after holidays I wouldn’t worry about it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 01/01/2024 19:24

YANBU. Make sure you phone, not email/text. Don’t put on a fake poorly voice.

Oliveandcheese · 01/01/2024 19:26

I think I’ll be calling in sick tomorrow too. I’ve been in bed for two days with covid. I’ll see in the morning but I’m not going to feel guilt about it, if I’m ill I’m ill.

Tonight1 · 01/01/2024 19:27

If you can't focus and need to rest then call in sick

Createausername1970 · 01/01/2024 19:27

Could you call in and say you are unwell so may not last the whole day, but you will catch-up with emails etc and see what needs prioritising and then see how you feel after that.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 01/01/2024 19:29

Lots of virus and infections doing the rounds, you need to be able to rest as you are not well enough to work. Don't give it a second thought.

Don't mess around doing that. If you're too unwell to work call them and say so.

I hope you feel better soon.

Onelifeonly · 01/01/2024 19:30

I always feel guilty about phoning in sick but if you are, then you should otherwise people will be expecting you to get on with it as normal. You sam always say, you'll let them know later if you feel up to working. There's been a lot of bugs around, no one will be surprised.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 01/01/2024 19:31

I've been ill with your symptoms since Xmas eve, I'm back at work tomorrow, going to WFH but I'm going to ring my manager and tell him that I'm ill but I'll either do what I can or go off sick, his choice.
Also, if I were you I'd try to get a GP appointment

margotrose · 01/01/2024 19:32

If you're sick, you're sick. You can't help it.

Unless you have form for calling in sick after holidays or weekends, it won't be a problem. There are loads of nasty viruses around.

Didimum · 01/01/2024 19:33

What do people expect GPs to do when they just have a virus/flu/winter whatever?

You’re not unreasonable to take tomorrow off sick, OP. Rest up and recover.

NachosAndCheese · 01/01/2024 19:36

Have you been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen? It sounds like the flu.

Tbh it’s not something I would ring the GP about, unless you are concerned about your breathing.

Biscuitsandpizza · 01/01/2024 19:39

@DidimumThis was my thought, do people always call their GP for things like this? It genuinely wouldn't cross my mind. I get it if there are other health conditions, but surely for a normally healthy person it's just a case of rest up, keep fluids up, and medicate with paracetamol and/or ibuprofen?

@sh0rtbread if you're ill, don't work, and don't feel guilty!

ClareBlue · 01/01/2024 19:39

The advice to 'do what you can' for anybody feeling sick is not good advice at all. If you are sick do not make your self available for work. You can make yourself sicker, make serious errors with your work, invalidate insurance and liability indemnification, cause issues with colleagues where you judgement is not up to scratch, etc etc.
If you are sick you are sick and shouldn't be working.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 01/01/2024 19:40

You sound similar to us (also from about Thursday, coincidentally) and we're testing positive for Covid. Have you tested? If you are positive, you have that as proof for the fact you're not just calling in hungover (I get the fear at this time of year, and I don't drink!)

Otherwise, I think if you're poorly, you're poorly and you need to rest. I'll be wfh tomorrow, which was the plan anyway, but I'll be letting my manager know we've been down with Covid and therefore I may not be massively productive.

Copperoliverbear · 01/01/2024 19:41

Call in sick
If you're ill you're ill. X

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 01/01/2024 19:41

I had this just before Xmas… I’ve never had a sick day but felt guilty calling in sick. Was too ill to wfh 🤒
as previous posters said, there is lots of bugs going around so if you’re not well , call in sick

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 01/01/2024 19:42

If you are not well enough to work then you call in sick.

It's the winter. Lots of people get sick. It's quite normal.

sh0rtbread · 01/01/2024 19:46

Thank you everyone for your replies.
The reason why I mentioned the GP is because that’s the first thing they always ask when doing a return to work whether we contacted the GP or not. I normally wouldn’t and don’t think I need to, but if I inform work I’ve been feeling unwell since Thursday they will question why I didn’t contact the GP.

I’ve never called in after the holidays before. I guess because I WFH I just get a little nervous about calling in sick.

sh0rtbread · 01/01/2024 19:47

I haven’t done a test but it’s worth a shot I suppose. I should still have some somewhere.

Mystro202 · 01/01/2024 19:48

I definitely wouldn't ring the doctor as they can't do much for you if it's a virus. This clogs up the system for those who actually need a doctor. Self-certify and rest up. Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Rachaelrachael · 01/01/2024 19:49

Those symptoms are exactly the same as my covid symptoms a month ago

Oliveandcheese · 01/01/2024 19:50

Definitely do a test! Sounds like my symptoms with covid

herewego2024 · 01/01/2024 19:53

I had those symptoms it wasn’t Covid, was left with a persistent cough, was at the GPs for something else, she heard me coughing and listened to my chest and my cold/cough had turned in to a bacterial chest infection so walked out with a prescription for antibiotics- day 5 of those now and feeling much better.

When you’re sick you’re sick your body doesn’t know what day of the week it is. Hope you feel better soon 💐

Peachtails · 01/01/2024 20:07

Call in sick, no brainer.

Get well soon x
