To think the mum in Mrs Doubtfire was the victim of a prick manchild ex?

Watching Mrs Doubtfire. Haven’t watched this is years, it’s such a favourite! As a child I remember thinking how mean Sally Field’s character is, and how cool Robin Williams is.

As a mother, I now have 100% changed my mind.

Williams’s character is a pathetic man child who can’t hold down a job. I’d have had it off with Pierce Brosnan too and probably would have done everything in my power to keep custody while Disney Dad, who can’t even keep a clean house until he ‘becomes a woman’, tells inappropriate jokes.

You know it's just a film right?

SaladFingerz · 01/01/2024 17:16

I wouldn't think too deeply about it. I'd just keep it firmly in my own mind, viewed as a child so not to spoil the memories of it.

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2024 17:16

True but she wasn't the best mother either. Brought a new man on the scene very early on. Always working, not much time to see her kids unless it involved her new man..

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2024 17:17

Yes. I lined it when it was released. But seeing it now, his behaviour is appalling. But it's still a good film'

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2024 17:18

Loved it. And yes mum isn't great either.

Starringroll · 01/01/2024 17:19

Since I was a child I was on the mums side and thought the dad was selfish, annoying, childish, immature and then abusive and I never watched the film again.

Alwaystired23 · 01/01/2024 17:21

I get where you're coming from OP. There's lots of films I've watched since becoming an adult, which I have changed my opinion on. For example, Billy Elliott. I always thought the dad was horrible, but he was going through a difficult time. He'd lost his wife and then the miners strike. It was actual must sadder that I thought as a young adult.

Can you imagine the thread, started by the mother in Mrs Doubtfire..AIBU, dh is like a big kid, who keep down a job. AIBU to kick him out.

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/01/2024 17:22

I'm with you @Alwaystired23. It was offensive when it came out and it's not aged well.

FuckingHellAdele · 01/01/2024 17:24

I was 18 when it came out so not a child, but even back in those days I recognised that the premise was dodgy AF Grin

Still love it though, I can quote nearly every line to this day. I use Mrs Doubtfire phrases all the time, including 'help is on the way dear!' whenever someone calls me from another room, and 'make a pincer' whenever a pincer type need arises. I just can't help it.

I also think Piers Brosnan is magnificent in it.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/01/2024 17:24

The worst part about Mrs Doubtfire is the dad would rather dress up and lie to his children so he can see them than just get a job and look after them.

And of course he can only do housework and cooking when dressed as a lady…

No film has wound me up more than this one. They could re-make it as a horror.

pikkumyy77 · 01/01/2024 17:25

I agree. I find the films cruelty to the Salky Fields character really unforgivable.

Comedycook · 01/01/2024 17:25

Agree totally. As a child I thought she was mean and he was a victim. Now as an adult, I think she was totally in the right.

Mintygoodness · 01/01/2024 17:30

A lot of films from the 80s and 90s haven't dated well. There was one I started to watch recently called Autumn in New York with Richard Gere (48) and Winona Ryder (22) and it just came off as extremely creepy -not romantic.

When they meet she is introduced to him by her grandmother and he finds out she is the daughter of an ex-girlfriend who died in a car accident soon after her birth, and decides to pursue her the next day. What a nauseating plotline 🤮!

Everyone in the movie was congratulating her on making such a catch as he was a restaurant owner and a womanizer but I found it unwatchable. It's from 2000 but I can't blame the misogynistic studio alone as it was directed by a woman!

cariadlet · 01/01/2024 17:36

I didn't watch Mrs Doubtfire when it came out because I always found Robin Williams so OTT in his comic roles.

Saw it years later when I was at my sisters house and she stuck the video on for our dc to watch.

It made me so angry that we were supposed to sympathise with him. The mum was holding the family together and he was an immature, irresponsible, selfish idiot.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 01/01/2024 17:38

To be fair, the whole point is that he learns not to be such a selfish, lazy arse during his time as Mrs D. I always felt for the mother, and felt she was in a horrible situation.

Brexile · 01/01/2024 17:40

Worst film ever. YANBU

Yes, we do, thanks.

Does that mean we can't discuss it?

ivfbabymomma1 · 01/01/2024 17:44

How gorgeous is "stu" though

SawYouLookingButChoseToIgnoreYou · 01/01/2024 17:45

It's just pretend.

everymirror · 01/01/2024 17:46

I like this film it's just silly light comedic film 🎥 not meant to be taken seriously

Tacotortoise · 01/01/2024 17:49

I think if you can't recognise your own ex husband of many years, father of your children, just because he's wearing a wig and a skirt you probably have bigger problems. Or you could just be a character in a comedy of course.

Boomboom22 · 01/01/2024 17:51

Yes but is that not the point of the film? It was my favourite in yr6 and I was 10 and did get it then.

And a custom body suit and peelable face made by your brother? Or close friend. Not just a wig and a suit, way more extreme!

@and you wouldn't notice anything amiss? I think the film is fun but it's hardly a convincing disguise is it?

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 01/01/2024 18:01

Yes, definitely not aged well but I'll never not crack up at the bus driver admiring 'her' hairy legs!

I remember being stunned they didn't get back together in the end because that's what films had always done but very glad now that they didn't - enough bad relationship lessons to internalise from 80s/90s films!!
