To celebrate an error code on my useless dishwasher

Twodogsonthecouch · 01/01/2024 08:57

Piece of shit expensive and not very old (maybe 6 years) dishwasher got an error code for the first time last night. The whole house celebrated.
AIBU to not even google the code..feck it out the door and get a new one?

What's the best dishwasher is the obvious next question.. DO NOT say Bosch 😡😡😡

I had a Bosch, it was rubbish but was replaced on warranty by another Bosch and that was crap too. No more Bosch dishwashers for me yet my Bosch washing machine and separate tumble dryer have been fantastic and still going strong since 2010!

Shodan · 01/01/2024 10:00

I just found out the other day that dishwashers have a hard water setting. You're supposed to use the little doodad to check the hardness of your water, then adjust the setting accordingly.

I found this out after extensive Googling as to why my dishwasher was leaving fine grit AND limescale deposits over everything, despite much pampering, descaling, salting, rinse aiding etc.

Now I have super shiny dishes.

Make sure you do this for your new dishwasher OP. Not the old ungrateful one, obvs. Best to start fresh .

My Bosch was shit.
When I divorced my exh and we were dividing stuff up I let him have it. He did fuck all around the house so didn't know it was shit. I hope it's still shit 🤣

Love this.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/01/2024 10:06

@Twodogsonthecouch i had a dishwasher with the grit problem. Also a Bosch.

Turns out I needed to clean the door seals including inside the groove / flap bit. Yes I’m a slattern. Was great after that.

on the other hand I dream of the day my useless expensive washer drier packs in. I loathe it.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 01/01/2024 09:35

You not taking care of it correctly op. Are you in a hard water area? Sounds like limescale to me and that you need to descale, keep your salt topped up and use rinse aid.

Why waste money on a new dishwasher if you don't need to?

Because it’s shit and I hate using it?

I have a kenwood- all the prongs have bent out of shape and the plates all stack against each other now so no matter how I stack it something always misses. Plus the racks aren’t adjustable so it’s a struggle to get certain pots and pans in.

if mine errorred I would be out buying a new one within minutes. But I want a more expensive one next time with adjustable and more robust racks, so I can’t justify the splurge until I need to.

We've got a Blomberg too, as recommended by an engineer who tried to fix our last dishwasher. I like it. Was surprisingly cheap, has a 30min cycle and one of those cutlery racks that sits at the top which is handy.

I had never heard of Blomberg either but had to buy a freezer in a hurry a few years ago and it was all I could get. I was very impressed, love the autodefrost. I saw that they also make Beko so when our dishwasher conked out I got one of those, it's been fine. We've had Bosch and Zanussi dishwashers over the years, all been OK. I have promised myself a new dishwasher when we move, certainly considering Blomberg now.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2024 10:12

I used a lot of foul curses over my new Bosch washing machine - the bloody thing didn’t have a ‘just spin’ function, just a ‘rinse and spin’ that you had to faff with (no instructions either!)and I mis-faffed, and ended up with a hand knitted (by me) pure wool jumper (yarn cost over £70) shrunk to fit a 3 year old.

Why do the sodding things have umpteen programmes, but not a ‘just spin’?
I’ll know to check next time but it hadn’t occurred to me that I’d need to.

jackstini · 01/01/2024 10:13

I loved my Fisher & Paykel dish drawers - I still mourn them but can't justify £1.5k to replace Sad

Current one is Hoover - it's crap

Although I never realised you have to clean the arms or that it might have a hard water setting...?!

SgtJuneAckland · 01/01/2024 10:16

Aldi 3 in 1 dishwasher tablets and rinse aid and salt, I detour to Aldi specifically for their dishwasher tablets, better than finish and a lot cheaper.
The dishwasher we inherited when we moved in gave up about a year ago (I think it was about 15-20 years old), we're having the kitchen renovated later this year so bought the cheapest one we could find as a stopgap, a Kenwood, it was about £200! I thought at the time if we get 18 months to two years out of it that's fine. It's actually amazing, great capacity, washes things with no water marks or grit. My plan was to get rid/sell it when we get the kitchen done and get a more expensive one that will last longer but I'm reconsidering.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 01/01/2024 10:16

I was delighted when our shitty Beko dishwasher started smoking and we could get a Bosch that promised it would dry plastics. It lied.

Calamitousness · 01/01/2024 10:17

Another Bosch hater here. My favourite dishwasher was a Siemens. I loved it with a great passion never matched by another dishwasher. It was expensive but worth every penny. I even took it with me when I moved and put the existing dishwasher from the house into our garage.

Citrusandginger · 01/01/2024 10:19

Bosch varies a lot across the range. Series 4 are politely called entry level and are built to be affordable.
Series 6 are better quality, so don't necessarily rule out a Bosch, just don't buy a cheap one.

Miele also cost more as you go up the range, but the build quality is supposed to be the same. You get more tech with the higher priced ones.

crowsfeet57 · 01/01/2024 10:20

I had a tumble drier that dried washing if it wanted, when it wanted, for as long as it wanted. It never dried a load in one go. It broke down in the spring and I dumped it and got a new one which works EVERY TIME!

Just get a new one!

SedentaryCat · 01/01/2024 10:21

Current dishwasher is a six year old Bosch. We use Tesco DW capsules, salt and rinse aid and have had very few problems. I can't remember the last time I had to clean the arms, but I do chuck in a Finish in-wash cleaning tablet occasionally which seems to do the trick.

Before this we had a fairly basic Miele, which lasted 12 years before we got rid. We had just replaced the washing machine when it broke, so couldn't afford another Miele. Our neighbours have one that is 20-odd years old and still going strong.

I wouldn't recommend Zanussi (if they still make them...we had this one 18 years ago). Ours caught fire - a known fault with the circuit board apparently.

Happy dishwasher shopping OP!

TiaraBoo · 01/01/2024 10:21

The engineer insisted that the problem was that we weren't washing the dishes thoroughly enough before putting them in there.

i.e only put clean plates in?
This made me laugh a lot!

JadeSeahorse · 01/01/2024 10:27

An ex massive Bosch fan here! (Note EX!)

I used to have everything Bosch in my house but noticed about 6 years ago that the quality and reliability was reducing drastically. Last dishwasher only lasted 4 years!

I made a big jump last time and replaced with a Hisense. Best decision ever!
Great programmes, very reliable and looks/feels really good quality at a much lesser price than Bosch. Two and a half years later I still love it.

I would be wary of Miele personally. My sil and her DIL - massive “Keeping up with the Jones’s” types - always buy Miele and are constantly plagued with issues. Again, like Bosch, Miele used to be really good years ago but not so reliable nowadays. No longer offer the 10 year guarantee 😒.

InSpainTheRain · 01/01/2024 10:33

If you hate it that much (I assume because it doesn't do it's job properly) then why not buy a new one? Seems crazy to keep something running which causes more angst than it gives help.

RestingCatsArseFace · 01/01/2024 10:35

My last one was a Bosch, it only dried one side. Replacement was purchased during a shortage and couldn't get the one I wanted which was a Beko, a basic one.

I ended up with a Siemens one while not wanting a Bosch but had no choice other than more expensive, and the Siemens was well overpriced for the quality. Unfortunately it is Bosch Siemens now. so I would suggest avoiding anything that says Siemens. It only dries by appoiuntment about once every 20 washes and only fits certain styles of crockery in the racks. It also leaves crockery and cutlery dirty. I use rinse aid. I clean the filter. I clean the machine. It is rubbish. Expensive rubbish.

My neighbour got a new one a while after, and got the Beko I wanted, it's good. She, however got it from AO which I refuse to use due to them delivering but not wanting to install, leaving an appliance in the middle of the kitchen and telling customers to get someone else to fit it and get a refund for the installation. They tried it with me and I told them to take it away. They also did it to neighbour. She was left with a dishwasher in her hall.

So, I would suggest getting a fairly basic one, and not Siemens if you don't want Bosch and not from AO if you want it fitted on arrival.

Littlemisscapable · 01/01/2024 10:36

Our dishwasher was shit for ages. Eventually man came out to fix it as per error code. We discovered that we were not locking in the filter at the bottom. We took it out...rinsed it etc but didn't lock it back into place. Et voila...... dishwasher has worked perfectly since. You def also need rinse aid and salt. Ignore what the tablets tell you. Have had no problem with bosch. Sorry !

Motnight · 01/01/2024 10:37

We had a beautiful Bosch dishwasher. It lasted for over 12 years. Then just stopped working. My head was turned by a Samsung. It's shit. Am waiting for the day that an error code appears on it

mumda · 01/01/2024 10:39

Buy a new one. But I would have played merry hell with anyone telling me I need to clean the dishwasher arms

What a load of tosh. Same as the dishwasher cleaner thing.
Clean the filter occasionally and avoid too much mashed potato as that's what makes them leave fine grit over everything.

My FIL a former repair man told me I should rinse everything before I put it in. What a waste of time and water that would be. They're designed to clean! The filter filters anything that needs filtering.

Georgyporky · 01/01/2024 10:56

My Indesit is great. Cheap as chips, 8 years old, never had a problem with it.

It replaced another Indesit that lasted 12 years.

cathyandclaire · 01/01/2024 10:59

We have a Bosch and use the expensive all in one tablets- pretty useless. This Xmas Dd put in salt and rinse aid and it is transformed- shiny clear glasses every time. I agree with Pp- the tablets lie!

Cookerhood · 01/01/2024 11:04

I've never cleaned my (Bosch) dishwasher arms! Should I? I occasionally clean the gunk from the filter.

GRex · 01/01/2024 11:05

We use all in one tablets, hard water area, no grit and can't remember when we cleaned it. We got a new Bosch washing machine though that rinsed out all fabric conditioner, so I feel your pain. The arguments with their customer "service" were extraordinary. Eventually made them take it back and delighted with a Samsung. Friday afternoon manufacturing flaws perhaps.
