To be scared that I’m still marked by the crows?

ChoccyOrangeYum · 31/12/2023 23:14

A couple of years ago I walked the dog on a local field. I know nothing about birds but I was later told it was their breeding season.

Anyway we must have got too close to their nests as they suddenly started flying around irrationally, making a hell of a racket screaming etc and then started dive bombing the dog. The dog thought this was fun so started chasing the crows. All hell broke loose basically and we were suddenly surrounded by crows going mental. We made a quick exit!!

I left it a few days then took the dog back on the field but after speaking to locals about the crows I stayed away from the back of the field (where they’re breeding) and kept dog in lead. As soon as we stepped on the field the noise started up again and the crows appeared and started dive bombing again! There was someone else on the field with a dog who the crows were totally ignoring!

We left and after a bit of research I found that crows remember faces and don’t forgive easily 😬 so we didn’t go back on.

A whole year later we went back on assuming the old crows won’t be there anymore but we were on there 5 minutes before it all started again. These birds are not bothering anyone else on the field, just me!!

Anyway my neighbour has suggested we go for a walk in the field tomorrow morning but I’m shit scared of the birds. Will they still go for me if I don’t have the dog?! Will they ever move on from the incident 2 years ago or am I banned from the field for life?!

Reminds me of a pic I took years ago.

😂😂Wtf is in there? An emu?

AhBiscuits · 01/01/2024 13:51

My sister got attacked by a goose. It came at her and she tried to scamper away backwards and fell into a wheelbarrow. I swear to god it laughed.

Geese are actually seriously foul tempered.

CormorantStrikesBack · 01/01/2024 13:53

Talking of canabilism I saw a great grey shrike yesterday. They kill smaller birds and mice and impale them on brambles and slowly peck their brains out and eat them.

Sounds a bit like some MN threads ( this one is much more constructive…)

Don’t some people have geese instead of guard dogs? Or did I dream that..

Yes, they do and I, for one, would not want to tangle with a guard goose. They can't easily be distracted with a sausage.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but there’s a massive theme park in France called Puy du Fou that we visited a few years ago and one of the things we remarked on was how incredibly clean it was. Turned out they trained rooks to pick up the rubbish. I’ve been contemplating befriending the neighbourhood crows to see if they’d consider tidying the garden for me.

A birdwatcher told me once that crows can count up to four, and that to photograph them you need to get five people to enter a hut/tent and then four to leave. Any less, and they know someone is in there watching and they don’t behave the same way.

Geese are bloody terrifying .

Isn’t it odd how disparaging our language is -“wouldn’t say boo to a goose” or “bird brain” come to mind. Murder of crows though is the right idea.

Ok DH has been, crows were there watching he says but no assault. I’m just about to meet neighbour now and will update in either -
10 mins - it did not go well and I legged it home

1 hour - I’m now at peace with the crows

wish me luck! 🦅

Now I’m seriously starting to worry!!

Wife2b · 01/01/2024 14:03

I’m worried OP has been kidnapped by the crows to forever be their slave…

Geese are terrifying, I had to pass a huge gaggle of them on a canal once. Awful.

I did see about 60 in a field a few months back, guessing they were gathering to migrate..one of them was pure white. I thought it was a swan, but google informed me it was a very rare albino.

When dd was a toddler a goose went for us and I’m ashamed to say I legged it and left dd 🙈🤣. Thankfully the goose did chase me so I maintain I was luring it away 🤥

Farm we stayed at did, although it was partially for the noise. Geese, when disturbed are very noisy.

SomeCatFromJapan · 01/01/2024 14:09

A friend had two pet geese, a male and a female. The female was pleasant-natured, the male was... feisty. He did tolerate most people but for some reason had a hatred of my brother and would peck him viciously if he got near him, once badly bruising his knee.
My brother smoked Gauloises, which were stinking, so I wonder if Roberto the goose (for that was his name) objected to that.

Singleandproud · 01/01/2024 14:12

I accidentally walked through a seagull nesting site.

I was in a foul mood as a teenager as my dad had insisted we go on a family walk as my little brother and I had been annoying each other all day so had stomped off on my own ahead of the rest of the family with my head down and headphones in and and didn't see the literal warning signs.

I got dive bombed and pecked at and then they bombed me with shit. I was covered, my brother found it hilarious and after cleaning up my exposed areas of skin my parents insisted we continued the 'jolly' family walk. It's not like I'm still holding a grudge 20 odd years later ...
