Long story short, my husband has had a skin rash which is very itchy and has caused him a lot of irritation over the last week or two. He has finally gone to see the Doctor, who has told him he has scabies which apparently can only be contracted via prolonged bodily contact, so he came home, trying to insinuate that I or my daughter must've given it to him yet neither my daughter or myself have any skin rashes at all and haven't had either. His tone completely pissed me off. I kind of saw it as deflection. I can't help thinking he's hiding something which I feel bad for but what would you think?

I would be boil washing all towels and bedding and asking him how long he's been itching

xyz111 · 29/12/2023 20:09

This from NHS website : Scabies spreads through close skin contact, including sexual contact. You cannot get scabies from pets.
People who live or work closely together in nurseries, university halls of residence or nursing homes are more at risk.

Could he have caught it from work? It doesn't automatically mean he's having an affair.

Raxacoricofallapatorian · 29/12/2023 20:11

You don't need prolonged bodily contact to catch scabies. I caught it in hospital once. I wasn't shagging any of the other patients or staff.

badmonkeybananas · 29/12/2023 20:12

I caught it at work once, didn't have any skin to skin contact with another person, but I changed their bed linen (before finding out they had scabies!)

DeedlessIndeed · 29/12/2023 20:14

Where does he work OP?

As per PP, some settings are higher risk. I support vulnerable people, many of which are accommodated in temporary accommodation / homelessness hostels etc. Scabies is rife and some colleagues have caught it from bedding, towels etc.

Purplewarrior · 29/12/2023 20:19

Unless he has hobbies or work that bring him into contact with other peoples bedding or towels, it’s an STD.

Symptoms usually show up within a month or so of contact.

LaughingCat · 29/12/2023 20:42

Could he maybe use towels at the gym for saunas etc? Same with sports massages etc. All sorts of random ways you can get it, where there’s shared linen and someone drops the ball with the cleaning standards.

AmIEnough · 29/12/2023 20:43

Thank you! He’s had a few work related night ms away in December

I've caught it twice once while in hospital giving birth and another time playing with nieces and nephews,The first time I was mortified when the doctor worked out what it was the second time it was ok no big deal now wheres that cream.

Unescorted · 29/12/2023 20:50

The permethrin he needs to get rid of the little fuckers is really difficult to get hold of. My DD and husband got them and we ended up getting a friend in India to send some of the lotion over.

I would recommend treating everyone on the same day, boil wash everything and decamp to an hotel for 4-5 days. Otherwise you keep reinfecting each other.

BobnLen · 29/12/2023 20:50

I had it when I was about 16, I don't know where from, not from sharing a bed with anyone though

ManateeFair · 29/12/2023 20:51

There was a scabies outbreak at my office. I’m confident the dozen or so people who caught it weren’t all shagging each other. You can catch it in lots of ways; it’s super contagious.

This is absolutely incorrect.

Well that’s what my sister was told by her GP two weeks ago…

TomatoSandwiches · 29/12/2023 20:54

I would be suspicious not because he has scabies but because of him automatically accusing yourself and DD, like he wanted to control the narrative of how he could have possibly contracted it.

That would have my hackles up.

MaryHinges · 29/12/2023 20:57

If he's been staying in hotels through work that haven't been properly cleaned he could well have got it from bed linen. It doesn't have to mean he's been cheating.

GirlsAloudReturnMadeMyYEAR · 29/12/2023 20:57

One of my colleagues got scabies from borrowing someone's work uniform who had it. I'm sure that was it as both are men and definitely not shagging lol. I don't know much about it but my colleague is a best mate and he shares all his life with me, would've just said if he thought he had scabies from any other source.

Smallhome · 29/12/2023 20:58

What does he do for work?

Well your sister’s GP needs to go back to his books then.
My dd caught scabies and her younger brother caught it from her purely by putting her hoodie on.

Yes that’s a possibility, although I agree with @TomatoSandwiches perspective too.

Going on the attack like that would put me on my guard.

SophieStew · 29/12/2023 21:05

Nurse reporting for duty!!

It’s possible to get scabies from shared clothing but it’s less common than from sexual contact, bedding or towels.

Given the hotel stays, it is possible I suppose that stuff hadn’t been washed properly.

His assertion that he got it from OP or DD when they don’t have scabies seems suspicious to me. I would be keeping a close eye on him.

I caught mine via teaching. It wasn’t close or prolonged contact. I wasn’t sexually active at the time. Your sister’s GP is mistaken - as we all are sometimes.

Sweetglossy · 29/12/2023 21:16

Do people ever recover from scabies? Or is it itchy skin for life?
