What are ‘all the trimmings’?

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

Turkey, ham ,stuffing, mash , roasties, broccoli ,carrot parsnip turnip mash , Brussels sprouts , cauliflower. Sometimes roasted veg. Gravy and cranberry sauce .

BettyBakesCakes · 30/12/2023 11:04

For me a variety of veg (depends on personal taste here but I'd say at least 3, but preferably 4 varieties, MUST include sprouts and carrots though), roasties, mash, new pots, yorkies, roasted parsnips and yorkie puds.

BettyBakesCakes · 30/12/2023 11:04

I loved Christmas food as a child, why would “kids” eat anything different? Why wouldn’t a child like roast potatoes?

One of my favourite Christmas meals in childhood was Pheasant Normande with Jerusalem artichokes!

My DS 11 has only just started liking roast potatoes so previously I've done mash as well (I hate mash). Kids are allowed not to like stuff, just the same as adults!

I'd rather spend the time celebrating the day than elevating the dinner. You can do what you like but dreaming big does not mean spending all day on my own in an apron in my book!

We cooked together, fabulous day.
Chatting, chopping, working together, my DS’s, partner and I.

Drinks as we cooked, Christmas music. All part of our day.

More than one type of potato?
Who has more than roast potatoes?
Why?

Roast and mashed for us- roast because they're so crispy and crunchy and delicious, and mashed because whipped up in a mixer, mash is a thing of beauty, a silky fluffy creamy buttery puree. Almost my favourite part of the meal!

Becgoz7 · 30/12/2023 17:36

Stuffing
Mash
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshires
Sprouts
Gravy
(This is minimum)

Cheesy leeks, cauliflower cheese, roast chestnuts are a nice addition

chaosmaker · 30/12/2023 17:43

@HurricaneZeldaAndToto bread sauce is basically vomit. If you don't try it then you're not missing anything. Have yet to see any tv chefs make it :)

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 30/12/2023 17:45

We had turkey and beef
Roast potato with onion and rosemary
Sprouts with bacon and chestnuts
Glazed carrots (marmalade)
Roasted parsnips
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets.
Cranberry sauce
Horseradish
Gravy

MsMaraschino · 30/12/2023 17:46

We had Turkey, chicken, beef and vegan mushroom pie.

The trimmings were roast potatoes and parsnips, Yorkies, pigs (both in blankets and naked), and stuffing. Then the veg: mashed swede and carrot, carrots in honey glaze, spiced red cabbage, leeks, sweetcorn, Brussels, cauliflower cheese, sweetcorn falafels, and broccoli. Plus some extra vegan stuff that came out of a box. Then gravy (meat and vegan) and cranberry sauce.

Swisschris · 30/12/2023 17:47

Roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, roasted parsnips & carrots, sprouts, pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce & yorkshire puds for my husband, home made gravy.

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 30/12/2023 17:49

Roast potatoes, mash, roast parsnips, cauli cheese, sprouts, peas, carrots, yorkshires, pigs in blankets, red cabbage, stuffing.
I’vewritten this without looking at previous posts.

PeapodBurgundy · 30/12/2023 17:50

For one person with ARFID and one vegetarian who doesn't have a meat-free alternative I served:

Roast Chicken
Roast Turkey
Pigs in Blankets
Stuffing
Yorkshire Puddings
Roast Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed Carrot and Swede (edited to add as I missed it off)
Honey Glazed Parsnips and Carrots
Steamed Greens (tenderstem broccoli, sugar-snap peas, green beans)
Minted Peas
Roasted Red Onion
Cauliflower and Broccoli Cheese
Bread Sauce
Mint Sauce
Onion Gravy

I usually do glazed red cabbage and apple, but there's only me who eats it, and I couldn't be bothered this year.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 30/12/2023 17:52

To me it’s a glorified roast dinner with 2 x stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts and chestnuts etc.

But the phrase gives me the ick.

StrawberryWater · 30/12/2023 17:52

For me:

Roast potatoes
Honey roast parsnips
Carrots and peas
Yorkshire puds
Sage and onion stuffing
Gravy and mint sauce

SaraJaneb · 30/12/2023 17:53

All the trimmings should mean variety of extra sides essentially. It differs but pigs in blankets, sprouts with chestnuts and bacon lardons, sweet potato (in our house)roasted parsnips, chestnut and cranberry stuffing, minted petit pois. Some people seem to just have the same meal they have every Sunday for Christmas dinner. Side note, we once ate "Christmas breakfast" a relative called it, potato Salad, warm ham and a warm boiled egg, oddest meal I've ever been offered lol. Well done for being willing to have Christmas day at a relatives house, Im far too selfish now days and prefer to do it myself every year.

Incognito1975 · 30/12/2023 17:54

All the trimmings to me is the extra above and beyond a normal Sunday roast. So home made stuffing and bread sauce, cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets and possibly sprouts if made with pancetta and chestnuts.

Blueink · 30/12/2023 17:57

I don’t think it necessarily means embellishing with so many random extras, but where your disappointment is coming from if you do.

Traditionally just the typical things that are served alongside to make a meal. Veg, potatoes, gravy, stuffing.

Kentucky83 · 30/12/2023 17:59

A 'trimming' would be anything that you wouldn't normally add to a roast.
Normal roast for me is meat, 2 veg, roasties and mash (I like both) and Yorkshire Puds with plenty of gravy.
Trimmings would therefore be things like extra veg, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sauces and I suppose some people would class Yorkies as one if they wouldn't normally bother.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 30/12/2023 18:00

In addition to the turkey (bacon rashers on top scoffed before everything else)

A ham
Gravy
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Roast potatoes
Red cabbage
Broccoli
Cauliflower Cheese
Roast Parsnips
Bread Sauce
Yorkshire Puddings
Carrots
Brussel sprouts
Cranberry sauce

If my dad had still been there there would be mashed potato as that was his favourite bit.
I can’t think of anything from that ridiculously long list that I could omit and not miss - not even the Brussels and I only have one of them just because it’s Christmas even though I hate them!

Your list would have been a bit disappointing for me OP.

C00kp1ssBabtridge · 30/12/2023 18:01

We had:
Roast potatoes
Mashed Potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
Roast carrots
Roast Parsnips
Sprouts
Red Cabbage
Yorkshire Pudding
Pigs in blankets
stuffing balls
Gravy
Cranberry sauce and mint sauce

shellyleppard · 30/12/2023 18:03

I did roast beef for our Christmas dinner......so roast beef, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, braised red cabbage, carrots, peas, brussel sprouts, Yorkshire pudding and home made gravy. It was bloody lovely!!!

Blueink · 30/12/2023 18:05

I wouldn’t expect Yorkshire puddings with turkey OP.

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 30/12/2023 18:05

@SaraJaneb the Christmas breakfast sounds horrific! But I bet it is a Christmas you’ll never forget.

I have not ventured out today, so no bread sauce yet. But I am determined to try it!
