To not wear my boobs to work? (dmx)

I have to go into the office for a week in January. I had a mastectomy 10 years ago and another one last summer. I always wore a prosthesis but as I'm now flat I don't bother. I haven't been into the office since my operation and wfh.
I've been trying on work outfits and I look fine flat but mentioned it to my mum who thought I should wear my fake boobs to make it more comfortable for others. It's made me think.
Aibu to not wear them?

Do whatever makes you feel happy ❤️

Notimeforaname · 29/12/2023 18:09

It's people like your mam who made me feel embarrassed and ashamed to go around with no bra on. I'm totally flat, but that's just how I was born.
I used to wear uncomfortable bras because I thought other people would look at me, I though men would laugh and women would pity me (there's a large chested woman at work who even if anyone makes a joke about boobs or I say anything about chest size or I say somthing about being smaller, she tilts her head and says "ah god" in such a sympathetic way when she looks at me)

So now I wear certain tops or dresses with no bra , I am so comfortable but always force myself to pretend I'm not self conscious but things like this make me think, yes your natural body does make people uncomfortable/feel sorry for you....change how it looks...

Notimeforaname · 29/12/2023 18:10

I'm sorry you even have to think about this op.
I hope you do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. X

Babysharkdoodoodood · 29/12/2023 18:12

I have the 'Buddha belly' as well, but only on one side with smx. I've recently found a company that makes a one sided bra, but still haven't gotten up the courage to go one sided at work.

I do at weekends and on holiday with a swimsuit, purely for comfort, but I sometimes think sod it Im not ashamed. It just looks a bit weird sometimes 😂

If my colleague was worried about my boobs or lack of them I would be straight to HR.

This! You are there to work.
Thank heavens there is no standard for women's looks in offices or other workplaces anymore.
Sheer madness if anyone has anything to say about your chest.
No no, you be proud of yourself, very proud! Walk/sit straight dressed how you feel comfortable.

Tawlk · 29/12/2023 18:13

You’ve been through enough, I certainly wouldn’t be thinking about anyone feeling comfortable. Think of your own comfortable and what you’d like to wear. You’ll look great either way ❤️

JMSA · 29/12/2023 18:15

You must 100% please yourself in this situation Smile

Createausername1970 · 29/12/2023 18:17

You do what suits you.

Out of devilment, should I find myself in the same scenario, I might quite like to have a variety of sizes and alternate them each time I went into the office.

Rewis · 29/12/2023 18:18

They will notice. Medical thing makes people uncomfortable. But whatever. It is not your job to make them uncomfortable. If they comment it is an HR problem. You do you.

JingleSnowmanTree · 29/12/2023 18:21

I'm sorry for what you've been through. Twice.

im sure your mum means well, but she's wring

fuck what anyone else might think.

Do whichever makes you most comfortable.

but if you go without, just be prepared for the looking & questioning plus the long term consequences.

Whenthebirdssing · 29/12/2023 18:22

Your body, your choice. Anyone else’s feelings don’t matter. It’s not like you are planning to be naked!

Offcom · 29/12/2023 18:29

I’d be so delighted if a colleague felt comfortable enough not to wear a prosthesis (of any kind) in a workspace they shared with me.

Wishing you the best of health this coming year @Stressedgiraffe

Riapia · 29/12/2023 18:30

Do what makes you confident.
If you’re confident you will be fine.

Onelifeonly · 29/12/2023 18:43

Do what feels right and most comfortable for you. Sounds like your mother has given you pause for thought, otherwise you'd wouldn't be on here asking about it. How wouid you feel if people did make comments or asked you what had happened? Do you feel ok with explaining or awkward? It's the same with anything we might feel sensitive about - do we want to fend off any questions or just appear to carry on as normal. There's stuff I've never mentioned to colleagues, and other things I have.

Siha345 · 29/12/2023 19:01

Do what you feel comfortable with! Anyone who mentions it would be quite rude in my opinion. Definitely don’t wear them just because it might make other people feel more comfortable (as though your chest has anything to do with them)

DilemmaDelilah · 29/12/2023 19:51

I had a single mastectomy in the middle of September, followed by radiotherapy. It's been just too uncomfortable until about the last week to wear a bra and my fake booby, so I've been going around with my remaining boob swinging low somewhere near my waist and the other side flat. I have tried to disguise it with scarves and things but I have felt pretty self-conscious. However, I'm not sure whether anyone has actually noticed so far. I think they would in an office situation, but then I am lopsided. I'm going back to work for the first time next week and I will be wearing my prosthesis.
I think it depends on what clothes you wear. If you tend to wear more close-fitting things then I would choose to wear my prostheses, but I would choose what size to wear if I had two. You were generously boobed before, you might feel more comfortable with smaller neater boobs? My tummy has always been bigger than my boobs so I would feel and look very odd with no boobs at all I think, and it would be difficult to get clothes for that shape.

Sdpbody · 30/12/2023 09:17

Fuck other people. If you are happy without, go with that.

OhwhyOY · 30/12/2023 09:33

It's not your job to make others comfortable. Do what suits you!

Trumpton · 30/12/2023 09:37

I had a single mastectomy with implant followed by removal of implant and a second mastectomy so now totally flat.
I never have worn prosthetic boobs and honestly nobody ever notices and if breast cancer is ever mentioned people are surprised that I have no boobs!
you do what makes you happy. My swimsuits are now altered so have no boob shape.

Startingagainandagain · 30/12/2023 09:38

Do what makes you comfortable and happy.

People at work should not be staring at your chest anyway!

If anyone has an issue with a flat chest it is their problem not yours.
