How many calories do you eat a day?

Edgeofseventeenstevienicks · 29/12/2023 12:43

I've been eating between 1900-2150 a day, I do at least an hour of exercise 6 days a week.
I am a healthy BMI and slim, but I notice I'm bloated, wobbly belly and thighs and I don't feel good.
It may be due to my period which is now in its 8th day, as I seem to be bloated for the duration of it.
My diet could be better, I am teetotal and have been for most of my life (I'm in my 30s), however I do eat a lot of sugar/refined carbs.
I am 100% addicted to sugar.. constant chocolate around the office doesn't help!
I know I don't need to lose weight, but I feel sluggish and not good in myself at present.
Would be interested to know what you think a healthy number of calories would be as I'm possibly eating too many?

Most days around 1800 to 2300

carolsandchristmas · 29/12/2023 12:45

I maintain on around 1800-1900 calories.
I'm 5ft 3 and 63kgs (or I was before Xmas)

I do a lot of weight training and I carry a lot of weight on my bum and boobs.
My friend is 52kgs and similar sizing. Weight is so subjective.

I found when I trained 6 times a week, my body was so inflamed and I was starving hungry and actually overate.

I think drop 2 training days and cut calories to 1700 and you will notice a difference!

Up your protein if you can and water. That's always helpful

ButtCheek · 29/12/2023 12:46

I wouldn’t necessarily eat less, just more lean protein and plants. You’ll find the sugar cravings lessen considerably. I would definitely start lifting weights if you don’t already—adding muscle will help with the “wobbly” feeling. And drinking more water!

ButtCheek · 29/12/2023 12:47

Also,1hr 6 days a week is too much. Lift weights 2-4 times a week and get your steps in.

KThnxBye · 29/12/2023 12:48

Not the foggiest clue. I don’t know how many calories is in anything or have any way of measuring it. My smartwatch likes to tell me my calorie “spend” but I don’t believe that for a second especially as I don’t know how much I weigh so I just put a guess in. I eat whatever I feel like eating and I know that for the last few weeks that’s been too much, so I will consciously rein that in until I feel more comfortable in my skin again, but that’s the extent of my dieting/calorie knowledge.

Blueeyedmale · 29/12/2023 12:49

I don't think your calorie intake is particularly high but on what advising you to eat I'm not sure on that one.and as someone who has had an eating disorder in the past I wouldn't feel comfortable advising a woman what to eat.

But I'm sure someone will be along in a bit to give you some good advice op good luck

PamelaParis · 29/12/2023 12:50

I have no idea!

PickAChew · 29/12/2023 12:52

1800-2000. Moderate carbs. 5'4 and menopausal and have maintained a bmi around 22 for several years, now.

Download my fitness pal or go on a TDEE estimator site and plug your details into there to get an idea of your calorie requirements.

Edgeofseventeenstevienicks · 29/12/2023 12:52

Thank you, yeh it may just be diet as opposed to calorie intake so I will try to reduce the sugar as hard as that'll be!

I don't think the number of calories is your issue. What kind of exercise are you doing? Is it something that gets you out in the fresh air? It sounds like you probably need to cut down the sugar, although as a fellow sugar addict that idea fills me with horror, and do exercise that makes you feel good, and targets the areas you feel aren't toned.

Edgeofseventeenstevienicks · 29/12/2023 12:56

My exercise is usually walking, parkrun once a week and then gym twice week which is mainly weights, don't tend to do cardio.. but I don't feel like I work myself that hard in terms of exercise tbh, my new year's resolution will be to cut out sugar 😂

Generally around 1000, can be slightly more or less depending on how much I can physically eat that day. I'm aiming to get them up to 1600 in the next 6 months.

I've had bariatric surgery and work out daily. I only eat protein rich foods really, with very very few snacks or carbs.

Ohtobetwentytwo · 29/12/2023 13:02

I think 10k steps a day, every day, keeps me in check. I am a slow walker but that normally takes me 1.5 hours. How many steps are you doing in 1 hour? Are you power walking?

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 29/12/2023 13:02

Definitely empathise on the sugar thing. I had to pretty much fully cut it out and it was very hard! After the first week it became much much easier though.

Focus on protein and low density foods and your desire to snack or fill up on refined carbs will massive reduce.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 29/12/2023 19:47

How many hours do you train a week? I am also 5ft 3 and 64 kg but can only eat 1300-1400 and putting weight on :(, not much but went from 63.5 to 64 in a few months. I dont exercise but thinking I need to start to do some weights

ClottedCreamScone · 29/12/2023 20:00

Currently approximately 8000, but usually about 1500 - 1800 (very sedentary 4 days a week because of office job).

mrlistersgelfbride · 29/12/2023 21:06

This week about 3500 a day!
My default is probably about 2200 which is what I need to maintain (I exercise every day).
1800 would be needed to loose weight which is what I'll do next week.

MirrorBack · 29/12/2023 21:12

2000-2500 I’d guess

LittleMissSunshiner · 29/12/2023 21:12

No idea but I eat exceptionally well and healthily, I don't count calories. I really only eat 'properly' once per day, an evening meal with maybe maximum one or two snacks in the day by which I mean a banana or small pack of nuts - I consider those little meals in their own right. I never eat junk food, sweets, booze, cakes, biscuits, etc.

I'd say your best bet for a dietary change is not counting calories but cut out the sugar. Switch out sweet sugary products or anything with added sugar for fresh fruit.

Edgeofseventeenstevienicks · 29/12/2023 21:23

Thanks for all the replies, I just seem to retain water/bloat for 2 weeks straight around my period, it's demoralising. ATM I've felt more bloated since 14th Dec..

OhMehGoddess · 29/12/2023 21:43

Wateroverwine · 29/12/2023 21:47

MadWifeInTheAttic · 29/12/2023 21:47

Between 800 and 5000ish.

Hernameisdeborah · 29/12/2023 22:08

Currently, about 2000. Outside the festive season, usually about 1100 ish. Any more than that and I really gain weight, very quickly. My metabolism is awful.
