Just that really. I’ve tried things but never kept them up. I know less Internet/phone and more water would be good so I might try that!

Couch to 5k in my 30s ( have since run a marathon and 2 half marathons) and now run a times a week. Was firmly not a runner before.

In my 40s open water swimming. Has given me a social circle and so many mental health benefits.

Recently - late 40s. Proper strength training. Love lifting weights 🏋️‍♀️

AuntieStella · 29/12/2023 08:57

I took up running

It's great for your mental health as well as bodily fitness, especially when you can get to somewhere green

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 29/12/2023 09:03

I lost 6 stones in my late 40s and took up bodybuilding 😊

Curlyshabtree · 29/12/2023 09:06

Gave up alcohol and smoking.

Centralperky · 29/12/2023 09:08

Gave up alcohol. Take a five mile walk every single morning, rain or shine.

Theprincessisblanketed · 29/12/2023 09:08

Exercise.

Any changes I tried to make before I put daily exercise into my life didn't stick.

Since exercising daily (except one rest day at weekends) I've had more energy/ability to make other positive changes.

I just tried all kinds of exercise (classes/gym/swim/couch2 5k etc) and saw what stuck. I thought I enjoyed swimming and hated group exercise, but it turns out I can't self motivate to swim and quite enjoy switching my brain off and just doing what someone else tells me in an exercise class.

Finding time for exercise every day is extremely difficult with young children though - I couldn't have managed it before they were school age.

Agree with the poster who said move more, sit less.

Cant say I’ve shed any weight, but I definitely feel a lot healthier and better for it.

NeedToChangeName · 29/12/2023 09:11

I think the key is to make small, sustainable changes and take it from there, to develop long term good habits

DustyLee123 · 29/12/2023 09:11

I also gave up alcohol but that was for better sleep and because of peri.
Id also say to look at supplements, as I feel the benefit of mine.

Re drinking water – if you struggle with drinking cold tap water in winter, pour a bit of hot water from the kettle into your glass.

That's the only way I can do it.

ellie09 · 29/12/2023 09:13

Going alcohol free!

I only drink on very rare occasions now and it isn't a lot either (glass or two of wine every few months)

HangingOver · 29/12/2023 09:14

Quit drinking and went vegan. You have to go looking for plant based snacks rather than just randomly grabbing them like I used to!

JubileeJumps · 29/12/2023 09:16

Gave up caffeine and alcohol.

spriots · 29/12/2023 09:17

I accepted that exercise was never going to be fun for me and started to treat it like brushing my teeth - an essential part of my routine that I do not expect to find particularly interesting or fun.

I now do it and I still hate doing it but I like the effects on my health.

speakout · 29/12/2023 09:18

Exercise. I have practiced yoga for much of my adult life I attend 6 classes a week, and practice at home too.
I am in my 60s and feel fit, toned, masses of energy.
I don't drink, smoke and eat a healthy diet.
My face is a little lined, but my body serves me well.

MyDogsPaws · 29/12/2023 09:20

Running changed my life forever. Used to be a heavy drinker/smoker and regular user of recreational drugs. After I had my first dc 12 years ago I knew I couldn’t go back to that life and so lost my identity and all my friends in one swoop. I started couch to 5k mainly as a way to stop myself starting smoking again and I’ve been running ever since.

I’ve run marathons and ultramarathons which is quite an achievement for someone like me who used to skive off school PE every week and go and smoke behind some sheds instead. But I’ve got so much from running over the years without even considering the races, just being fit and healthy and knowing im capable to doing ‘hard things’ when I want to has changed my whole outlook on life!

FrogSplash · 29/12/2023 09:22

Drinking water and doing online yoga (even 10 minutes a day makes a difference).

Charlize43 · 29/12/2023 09:23

Walking. I try to walk everywhere now whenever possible and will allocate the time. I put my headphones on, listen to music and find myself thinking about things. It's lovely to have those 30-60 minutes to do that. I love it! Last summer I was walking 5 miles every day to work.

I lost a lot of weight and walking enables me to maintain it.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 29/12/2023 09:30

Only buying comfortable shoes (for casual wear).

disabling all “read message” / “last online” features etc.

drinking less alcohol.

(also physical therapy and medical massages. But I’m not sure if that’s the kind of thing you meant tbh)

Walking is totally underrated.
I walk a lot and don’t have any issues maintaining my weight.

Dinobooklover · 29/12/2023 09:41

I took up running, quit drinking alcohol and i drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Oh and yoga every day, too.

RedRobyn2021 · 29/12/2023 09:42

Stopped smoking and drinking
Got a dog I walk twice a day
Stopped drinking squash
Started eating homemade bread no supermarket bread
Pushed myself into social interactions even if it's hard
Going to bed earlier
Keeping on top of housework and organising

lesdeluges · 29/12/2023 09:49

A little of what I fancy now and then, instead of a LOT every day. No alcohol though.

Walk walk walk, most days at least 5k but always get out of the house even for ten minutes on a rotten day.

Declutter. I try for a manageable goal though, once a week for 20 minutes, then I don't get fed up and close the door on the room!

Best thing? Going away for Christmas and New Year.. It was the first time ever this year, but I hope to spend Christmas and NY abroad as long as I can from now on. So relaxing.

I'm 66 and thankfully doing ok health wise.

Happy New Year all.

more chocolate chips in my cookies

the antioxidants make my blue fur look more vibrant and silky

SilverGlitterBaubles · 29/12/2023 10:11

Walking - I walk everywhere I can instead of jumping in the car or taking a bus unless it's absolutely necessary or the weather is bad. I find getting outdoors clears my mind and makes me feel better.
