....to be unsurprised the BBC called the London Oratory a "prestigious private school" when it isn't?

The London Oratory school is in the news because there's been a minor blaze there (nobody hurt) and a pupil has been taken in for questioning.

I was idly listening to PM on Radio 4, and they described the school as a "prestigious private school". Except it isn't, of course. It's a state-funded school. Except, again, it's functionally a free private school for posh and/or famous people that most ordinary mortals couldn't hope to get their kids into. I found this burst of accidental honesty from the BBC quite refreshing.

I'm sick of the posh London schools that are state-funded but that are effectively free private schools because of the way they massage their admissions. The now-disgraced former head of Holland Park School was taking HPS firmly in that direction, I know that a few other West London schools operate in the same way. I would love to see Ofsted - who were useless re the HPS scandal until it was too late - address this in some way. All children, even the ones whose parents aren't rich or famous, should have equal access to local schools, regardless of income, religion or parental connections.

AIBU to enjoy this bit of accidental honesty from the BBC?

The Oratory sure dodged a bullet here...

so u r current mums of Los . And u call all future SEND kids bullets ?
well done .

Nothing of the sort. You should take your own advice and "self improve on comprehension skills".
It's badly needed.

The point abt catholic schools only being better when oversubscribed is so true - round us they are not good…

Round here . They r v good .
and empty due to low birth rate .

1% free meal .
and
people there super diversity , all foreign accents , no one barking online at office hours .
super nice and friendly .

Sw19 is similar too . Maybe 10% free meal .
diverse also. No insiders ones barking at 5pm online .
the mums all quite happy there in primary , nothing to moan / complaint about .

U see: my church does LGBTQ mass .
and HIV mass .
so this strictness of Los is shock for me again .

Why? Aren’t these people welcome at a regular mass?

Ewrika · 02/05/2024 17:58

So it sounds like QE boys but catholic.

got it .

But surely that can’t be a Catholic Church then and with the school being so over subscribed it is only Catholics that get a place.

Ewrika · 02/05/2024 18:01

Maybe QE boys have better senco .
and more empathy sympathy to SEND kids.

than this one.

Has your son actually got a place at QE boys, or are you just pointlessly ranting about that one too?

Maybe orphan too .
but maybe they reject top 1/2/3 criteria hence forcing all qualified to appeal .

the seizure mum friend will just move onto grammar school with much better SENCO .
Than figuring out los Inside out . Neither bother to appeal .

Do I know u ? U want to know where other people s children school names ?

BobbyBiscuits · 02/05/2024 18:06

Is it selective, is there an exam? I guess if so then it's more like a grammar. If it's not I don't see how they can only end up with posh ones!?
I went to a comp that is considered one of the better/posher ones in that area of London. But still there were at least 50% of the kids from the local estates and some were pretty challenging behaviour wise. My friends all left with zero GCSEs! I guess that says more about my choice of friends than the school. Lol.

I don’t know how the London systems work but dont schools have a catchment area? So how do they massage entries if they have to take people from a certain area. There aren’t state selective schools in London are there?

There are two grammar schools in Bromley that take people from outside their catchment area, and I know one in Bexley that does. My next door neighbours' children went to the one in Bexley which is not our catchment, though not far. My son was offered a place at one in Bromley but we didn't take it as he had another offer which was preferred. Therefore, yes, they do take children from outside their catchment area.

The Oratory is a grammar school, therefore state funded. Admission is according to how bright the child is. I know someone who had three boys at the Oratory.

Ewrika · 02/05/2024 18:08

Ok so statistically so far , 70% of here self claimed current mums are aggressive abusive online, this speaks Volumn for its own image . Not the type of attitude I expect .
it rather remind me of a school in Crydon .
