Not to share my medication

Crabby12345 · 26/12/2023 20:57

So I have been really ill with tonsillitis and now my partner has caught it. I am a quarter of the way through my antibiotics and he hasn’t been able to get out to get any so wants to have some of mine and replace the rest of the course when he can get to a Dr/Pharmacist. I said no as I need to finish the course to get rid of this and I don’t know if he will be prescribed the same antibiotic. I also need to finish mine to get over this quickly as I’m the main carer for our lb. He’s really annoyed that I won’t give him any-Aibu?

YANBU. Don’t share your prescription medication. If he feel he needs antibiotics the he needs to see the GP or nurse practitioner.

BurntOutGirl · 26/12/2023 21:00

Absolutely do not share medicine!!!

His might be viral anyway in which case he won't be prescribed any.

You are putting yourself at risk of developing a resistance to that antibiotic which is dangerous

festivepains · 26/12/2023 21:02

No don't give it to him. If he isn't prescribed any then you'll not finish the course and it could come back

Beebopwasthebest · 26/12/2023 21:02

Tonsillitis means inflamed tonsils (literally). The cause is likely viral. Some people will get more inflamed tonsils than others because virus affects them differently. Some people will get secondarily infected tonsils because of the virus.

Not everyone needs antibiotics, if they do they need to be prescribed so I wouldn't share.

Sandia1 · 26/12/2023 21:02

No- is very likely he'll be prescribed different ones and the GP won't be impressed if he explains that he's started taking yours.

Rudolphtherednoseddog · 26/12/2023 21:04

He doesn’t even know for sure if he has the same thing. If he thinks he needs antibiotics he needs to see someone who can properly prescribe them - in what sense has he “not been able to get out to get any”? He just needs to go through the same out of hours (or at this point ordinary GP) process as everyone else…

Crabby12345 · 26/12/2023 21:07

Well he’s been in bed most of the day whilst I was looking after our little one (no thought to the fact I still feel horrendous!) He’s had all day to go and get them but left it until 5pm when the pharmacies we’re closed and is now angry at me because he’s in pain and I won’t help him.

This. I'd be telling him he is being irresponsible for even suggesting this.

whyamiawakestill · 26/12/2023 21:27

He can order online.

Then he is an arse so that's another reason not to give him any

festivepains · 26/12/2023 21:29

He’s had all day to go and get them but left it until 5pm when the pharmacies we’re close so has he actually been prescribed them?

Hankunamatata · 26/12/2023 21:30

Most tonsillitis is viral. He needs ibuprofen, paracetamol and fluids. Throat spray if needed. Doesn't automatically need antibiotics

Throckmorton · 26/12/2023 21:30

You MUST finish the course, as otherwise you're contributing to the rise in antibiotic resistance. Your DH is being ridiculous.

IWishItWasSpring · 26/12/2023 21:32

whyamiawakestill · 26/12/2023 21:27

This. He could have got an online GP appointment if he’d paid for one.

YireosDodeAver · 26/12/2023 21:35

You really mustn't share

Having only half a course of antibiotics creates antibiotic-resistant microbes that are then more difficult to treat.

If he's in pain he needs painkillers. Antibiotics don't affect pain levels and only make any difference if there's an infection along with the virus. If there's no infection they make no difference.

ChristmasMerry · 26/12/2023 21:37

He can go to a pharmacist with a sore throat and get prescribed antibiotics if needed. Chances are he’d be given something different to you and you would be screwed and both contributing to resistance. It’s likely viral not needing antibiotics anyway

Crabby12345 · 26/12/2023 21:37

Yes he called 111 early morning and was prescribed them to collect later that morning…then fell asleep until 4.30

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/12/2023 21:39

His own fault he can’t get them!

You just finish yours.

Once he gets his mitts on yours who’s to say he’ll bother going out for his? Or will he expect you to go having made it your problem but preventing you from taking your own meds?

Stopandlook · 26/12/2023 21:40

if he’s been prescribed the same ones I would 100% share - why wouldn’t you want to help him?
I had a strep throat last year and I was absolutely miserable with unbearable pain until I got anti biotics. I could see how people overdose on pain meds!

ChateauDuMont · 26/12/2023 21:54

You finish the course and tomorrow he goes and sorts out his own medication.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 26/12/2023 21:55

Ex formulation scientist with antibiotics.
you MUST finish the course as prescribed
as other people mention failing to complete course of antibiotics can lead to resistance. In the first instant this will, however, be your own resistance and can lead to a few bacteria surviving and developing mutation to be resistant, then multiplying, meaning you get a surge of re infection that cannot be treated with this first line of antibiotics. In very worst case example you could end up with sepsis due to untreatable infection. Never mind the adding to global resistance milarky

also, antibiotic types are very specifically prescribed for first line treatment of various types on infection. So, whilst you might both have bacterial infection, the drug of choice could well be very different . Taking inappropriate antibiotics or dosages can lead to issues.

your partner is being a complete dick, and ignorant to boot. As other say he could have got off his arse and gone to pharmacist. It’s lazy and arrogant.

make sure you hide your meds, and do not give any to him. If he becomes very ill he can go to hospital and tell them that he didn’t leg it urgently to pharmacist to get a prescription . To be honest I’d be very surprised if they gave him antibiotics in first 48 post infection as it’s usually viral in its cause, and only needs antibiotics for a secondary bacterial infection. Antibiotics do nothing for viral infections.

oneflewoverthe · 26/12/2023 22:08

Definitely don't give him yours. Lazy sod has had all day to do pick them up. Not exactly difficult. You've also been picking up the slack with childcare even though you're unwell yourself.

ScremeEggs · 26/12/2023 22:14

No don't give it to him. If he isn't prescribed any then you'll not finish the course and it could come back

This

Greenvelvetdress · 26/12/2023 22:28

Feel like the original op isn't quite the truth as the update is now that he has a prescription (presumably for the same antibiotics) but hasn't picked them up yet...

If this is the case then of course you're being unreasonable to not give him 1/2 doses of yours, they he can replace tomorrow

Savedpassword · 26/12/2023 22:30

Is it the same antibiotic?
