I am hosting for 12 people for Christmas lunch tomorrow...but my husband has just this evening come down with norovirus. What do I do!? If I cancel, whoch given the the time id have to do on christmas morning, no one will have their own christmas lunch. But I don't want everyone to get sick... help!

I’d rather sit in my garden and eat the grass piece by piece than risk ever having norovirus again. I’ve had it once and truly felt like I was dying!

Same 😬

I would cancel. You could always offer to give guests some of the food to take and cook at home (if they are local). Yes it’s a pain in the bum but I would rather eat cheese in toast for Christmas dinner than be glued to the toilet in Boxing Day.

This really isn't a question. Christmas or not, if you or member of the household is ever ill, especially with something like noro, be completely honest with guests and just cancel.

I already have bad and annoyed memories of someone who because they purchased the food already, didn't inform anyone they were sick on the day. It is completely dishonest, untrustworthy and frankly makes people never want to visit you again.

It is no ones fault you are sick, but you still have a duty to inform people, especially never know if the sickness you have will make the other person even worse and spread to more vulnerable people.

OP is doing the right thing by cancelling

LaurieStrode · 25/12/2023 11:07

And it's not just about your guests, but who they might spread it to in coming days.

Barney60 · 25/12/2023 11:16

Sorry but am also team beans on toast.
I would NOT want norovirus again its horrendous.

Haveabreakkitkat · 25/12/2023 11:20

Well I'm having pizza for my Christmas dinner because the host is poorly. It's fine. I'd rather that than her make herself even more unwell! We will just rearrange Christmas dinner!

ExTheCheater · 24/12/2023 23:39

You can't cancel Xmas day. Husband upstairs and clean.

In a case like this you can!

No-one will starve - I'll bet they all have food in their cupboards, even if it's eggs and beans.

You can offer to hold Christmas after the "plague" - or, as suggested above, ask if anyone else can do the honours and carefully hand over your food of them to cook.

It's such a horrible illness - don't inflict it on anyone else.

Hope your DH is well soon, and that you don't contract it, too.

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 25/12/2023 11:41

Merry Christmas everyone.

My husband is recovering from Cancer, my 84 year old mother has underlying health issues and my other guests who were coming over today have just cancelled as their eldest grown up daughter has tested positive for Covid and they dont want to risk giving it to husband.my mum.

So now I am dropping off my mums food as she won't come and stay over at ours and then making 'takeaway' plates for my nephew and his family to collect from us.

My husband isnt great today, he has discovered a lump on his jaw and now has an appointment with ADOC this afternoon. It is hard not to jump to 'more cancer'
Oh well, I have prosecco in the fridge and food to make, best get on with it.

I read this thread last night. Woke up at 3am with what I thought was heartburn and feeling sick. By 9am I was on the loo (pebbledashing it as Jim Royle might say) and violently chucking up into a bucket at the same time. I’ve needed 2 showers! It’s grim and I’m hoping OP hasn’t succumbed to it (although she may have by now). It’s quite scary how little notice you get before needing the toilet & bucket. I’ve normally got an iron clad stomach and haven’t had anything like this since around 2004 (painful etched in my memory). So for anyone thinking a bit of a stomach bug is fine, whatever is going round at the moment is pretty grim.

SamW98 · 25/12/2023 12:10

Of course you have to cancel. It’s not right for anyone to be exposed to a horrible virus that could knock them out for days.

Im also team beans on toast.
Ive got that nasty flu/ cold that’s going around so spending today on my own rather than risk passing it on to my elderly parents and disabled niece who would get far worse symptoms than me. I’m eating M&S party food and I’ll bust family in a few days when I’m feeling a bit better.

HR517 · 25/12/2023 12:16

Sounds unpleasant. Are you sure it’s not a new variant of the COVID? Bad timing (speaking of the bug, not your post!). Hope it hasn’t ruined your Christmas & you feel better soon.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 25/12/2023 12:40

@coffeestrongblacknosugar so sorry to hear that. Holding a positive thought for your DH today. 💐 for you.

@coffeestrongblacknosugar so sorry to hear that. Holding a positive thought for your DH today. 💐 for you.

Thank you, just an update - my husband went to emergency Dr - at 111 advice and he has been admitted and now kept in hospital overnight. Needless to say this was not in any of my plans, A, B, or C! So he is on IV antibiotics, tested for everything, had a chest Xray and looks like a bad chest infection. Ive left him there now and will go back in the morning. He is in good hands (I work in that department).

Tomorrow's Boxing Day family buffet has been cancelled too. This year can 100% fuck right off. 2024 better be a better year for us.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 25/12/2023 20:26

@coffeestrongblacknosugar Sounds like your DH is in good hands . Sorry it’s been such a shocker of a Christmas for you. Hope 2024 is a great year.

LaurieStrode · 25/12/2023 20:30

Gosh, sorry to read your update but thankfully he is in the right place. What a turn of events!
Good luck. 🌲

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 26/12/2023 06:34

Thank you all, he is well looked after. This does make you realise what is important and what is not.

43ontherocksporfavor · 26/12/2023 16:50

Hope you’re ok op! Finger’s crossed you don’t succumb! How did the guests take it?

Greenshake · 26/12/2023 16:51

I too am awaiting any updates!

Sarah202023 · 26/12/2023 18:36

Me and DS3 escaped (so far) !!! And MIL hosted for everyone else. So I count that as successes all round!
Thanks all for the moral support 😂

I take it your other kids went down with it too? Norovirus is horrible, you have my sympathies.

Your MIL is a Heroine!

Well done her for stepping in to the breach.

I hope you escape Norovirus, OP..it's truly awful.
I ended up being taken to hospital by ambulance once and it was norovirus {many years ago}
I didn't call the ambulance, my friend did...I literally couldn't stand up or move with fluid loss.

Have caught it since then, but never as badly.

Type O+blood group people tend to get it more severely for some reason.

The doctor said the brain can get into a state when it can't stop triggering the vomiting response.
I had an injection that helped.

I hope no one caught norovirus from me there....
