Help- do I cancel christmas lunch!?

Sarah202023 · 24/12/2023 23:34

I am hosting for 12 people for Christmas lunch tomorrow...but my husband has just this evening come down with norovirus. What do I do!? If I cancel, whoch given the the time id have to do on christmas morning, no one will have their own christmas lunch. But I don't want everyone to get sick... help!

Ffs cancel.

No one wants norovirus. I'd rather sit in the dark on my own eating plain toast on Xmas than catch norovirus. At least let people know

uclpp · 24/12/2023 23:47

I agree let the people know and decide for themselves. I personally would not go to a house where someone had noro. And neither would I mind my Christmas dinner being scrambled eggs on toast.

Nightmare, can you isolate your husband upstairs and give everything a serious disinfect downstairs and sleep separate from him? I think if everyone is super careful about hugs and kisses and hand washing and he is kept well out the way and has no contact with everyone and the house is as thoroughly cleaned as possible before they come you will greatly reduce the risk? Obviously if you or anyone else are showing signs of it overnight or in the morning this won't work :( but we've had it in our house and only 2/4 got it, I think it depends where you are at tomorrow. Maybe the food can be taken to someone elses?

Edited

DO NOT do this. It’s an airborne virus and your DH has been all over the house by now. I’d be so annoyed if you’d invited me and went ahead knowing you had norovirus in the house. Just cancel it OP, there’s no point in everyone getting sick. This is no better than the thread that a SIL turned up to a house having a child without, it’s such a selfish thing to do.

PickAChew · 24/12/2023 23:48

Team beans on toast. It's too risky to be feeding people.

ThequalityoftheReps · 24/12/2023 23:48

You must cancel. You might be fine now hut could be barfing by the kings speech. Imagine if you have a house-full and DH is already out of it upstairs.

You could give choice and try but I wouldn't come or want to risk hosting

I knew the right answer, I just needed someone (or everyone!) to give me a little shake!
I'd cooked the turkey etc in advance today so will offer that up for collection tomorrow :)

Imagine if any of those guests got it . I would definitely not be cooking a massive lunch .

you may well have it yourself .

HelloCiao · 24/12/2023 23:49

Noro is so contagious. I would rather be alone with no food on Christmas day than enter a noro house. You'll probably come down with it tomorrow and you won't appreciate having 12 guests whilst puking.

Relativelydifficult · 24/12/2023 23:49

Oh dear, please postpone....freeze the food, find another day to do a Post Christmas Dinner. Hope DH feels better soon.

PeloMom · 24/12/2023 23:49

Let your guests know.

43ontherocksporfavor · 24/12/2023 23:49

I attended a funeral last year and 25 out of 30 guests caught noro. Don’t risk it!

seagull82 · 24/12/2023 23:50

Cancel, I'd rather a takeaway (not sure if it's standard across the UK but my local Indian is open) Safe the food and host in a few days.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 24/12/2023 23:53

We once met my friends husband after he had been ill with noro and the only way to describe him was weak, totally out of the norm, it freaked me out. I wouldn't risk giving that to anyone.

Team beans on toast!

dishyrishi · 24/12/2023 23:53

Errr, yes, cancel - come to my house and go home with the shits, I think not

Numbersarefun · 24/12/2023 23:54

I agree cancel.
Can I just ask though, how do you know it’s norovirus?

homeishere · 24/12/2023 23:54

Don’t offer them cold turkey laced with norovirus! That sounds really shit.

Flux1 · 24/12/2023 23:54

Just wondering how do you know it's norovirus rather than a standard tummy bug?

Either way, sorry to hear. So disappointing for you after all your preparation.

EmmaEmerald · 24/12/2023 23:55

RandomMess · 24/12/2023 23:44

Anyone that has had a true Noro would never willingly expose themselves again.

After days of V&D the stomach pains can last up to 2 weeks. It's hideous.

This.

I'd imagine that's infected now too.

Lecc · 24/12/2023 23:57

Just cancel, full stop.
People won't want to come anyway. Do not postpone and use the food later. It may well be contaminated.

Sarah202023 · 24/12/2023 23:57

Just assuming it is, given the symptoms and it being in the news as spreading at the moment...

OP posts:
Ironlights · 24/12/2023 23:58

Yes cancel, I'd be furious if I didn't know

Sarah202023 · 24/12/2023 23:58

Thanks...we've not had this before so learning lots. Looks like we will be having turkey ourselves for the next week!

This happened to us twice. First time, Our aunt who was hosting started puking during the night. We woke to the text in the morning. My granda went into their house, rescued the uncooked, fridged food and we cooked and ate that. We left them the soup that aunt had already made.
Second time, I was recovering from a big operation and not fit to be standing cooking so we got a Chinese on Christmas Day.
