To not see the point of wrapping presents?

The paper is torn off, makes a mess and then gets put in the bin. I know they look nice under the tree but other than that is there an actual point to this tradition?

Has DH?

Hatewrappingpresents · 25/12/2023 04:40

Yes, he’s the one who wants them wrapped, so I’ve let him do the wrapping 👍🏻

Maybe you should treat each other to some gift boxes and ribbons.
DH has been reminiscing about presents round the tree. I am trying to remember if my grandparents had a tree. The dog would surely have destroyed it let alone any presents underneath.

Glad it’s sorted.

As a kid we never had our santa presents wrapped. My mum used them giant gift bags to put all of our stuff in and the bigger stuff just set around them and we loved going through it all. Didn't care they weren't wrapped and still had all the excitement. Only as we have got older and there are less presents we have got them wrapped. My husband and I wrap all of our presents for each other but when our little girl gets old enough to understand santa I doubt she'll get hers wrapped either.

People commenting about handing over presents in the bag it came in I think that's a bit silly. Presents for individual people yes absolutely wrapped but santa presents not needed so much.

We wrap very few presents.

The kids have had some velvet bags since they were little my mum had them made.

My kids are older now. The 19 year old asked me to stop wrapping them for her. She is all about sustainability. Ds is 13 and autistic and finds unwrapping things a bit over whelming. When he found out hers weren’t being wrapped he asked for his not to be wrapped from last year. He absolutely would hate having to carefully unwrap, gently remove tape and fold up.

I still wrap things for my friends and their kids and my dads. But everything under the tree for the kids is in sacks or a few gift bags that we reuse.

Personally, I find it fun, so do my kids. All the presents are colourful, it jazzes up things like socks and stationary which I do love but doesn't look exciting under a tree.
I like that there is a bit of mystery, as a kid we loved guessing what we had got or what others had. If you had something obvious-shaped like a book, we would often wrap something random with it like a potato or a cheese grater just to make the guessing harder.

Also we have a very big family and lots of them buy gifts for the kids and its helpful being able to tell what is from which relative at a glance due to the different wrapping paper.

Mostly pointless, but fun, like lots of fun things like crackers and themed pyjamas or tinsel- sometimes its nice just to do something because its pretty and fun.

Most of the dc's presents are in fabric gift bags with a drawstring. I've only wrapped ones that are boxes or going to other people, which isn't very many. Still nice element of surprise, no waste and quick to open.

I know someone who just piles up the kids’ presents unwrapped for the kids to find in the morning, which surprises me because he’s usually very big on presentation and things looking nice.

He does buy them A LOT of stuff, and he has twins, so I think maybe he just lost the will to do that much wrapping. Or perhaps his kids got a bit overwhelmed with the unwrapping when they were tiny so he stopped doing it, I don’t know. His kids absolutely don’t seem to mind and get just as excited on Christmas morning, from what I can tell.

He does wrap presents for adults I think.

Personally, I love both wrapping and unwrapping and feel like it adds to the excitement and looks lovely. Each to their own though, of course - whatever works for you! I certainly wouldn’t be offended to be given an unwrapped gift.
