To not see the point of wrapping presents?

The paper is torn off, makes a mess and then gets put in the bin. I know they look nice under the tree but other than that is there an actual point to this tradition?

We don’t tear the paper off. We unwrap it carefully, trying to save the paper. Even the kids do this. We reuse it every year! A little bit gets chucked but mostly it doesn’t. Or we use gift bags that we also reuse.

We do this too, makes the pile under the tree look increasingly eclectic each year!

stargirl1701 · 24/12/2023 22:37

We use fabric wrapping. Just fold, pop into the box and reuse throughout the year.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 24/12/2023 22:39

The presents I remember best were not wrapped. The first sight of them was hugely exciting.
Leave some presents in the original shop bags.

PostItInABook · 24/12/2023 22:39

I have fond memories spending an evening hidden away upstairs with my mum as a pre teen onwards while we wrapped everyone’s gifts together….with a glass of wine or five when I was older.

And unwrapping things is part of Christmas.

kitsuneghost · 24/12/2023 22:39

Unwrapping is the best bit

Mairzydotes · 24/12/2023 22:40

I don't see the point of wrapping either. I try to set up toys that need assembled so they're ready to play with( that's what my parents did for me ) .

daffodilandtulip · 24/12/2023 22:42

My parents didn't wrap ours. Christmas morning took about three seconds.

Plus my sister always snuck down in the night and cherry picked the best gift and got to keep it, whether it was hers or not.

We have a selection of drawstring cotton gift bags in a variety of colours and sizes. All the aesthetic appeal of wrapping, surprises maintained, no waste, and it takes seconds to 'wrap' everything so I get to enjoy Christmas eve.

Game changer. One session of sewing sets up for the entire foreseeable future!

CaramelMac · 24/12/2023 22:46

Well you could say what’s the point of giving gifts on the 25th, why not just hand them over as soon as they’ve been bought?

TopicalNameChange · 24/12/2023 22:46

DH and I used to wrap gifts for each other in throws off the back of the sofa. It works just fine.

I used Aldi's recycled brown paper this year (it does have Christmas decorations on it). It's been great - very crumply so you can just sort of crumple it around things, and not shiny so tape sticks on easily. And it can be used to start the fire!

But yeah, wrapping presents is a have to do, rather than a want to do!

dummytaker · 24/12/2023 22:46

My mum started using colorful scarves for wrapping. She can then use them rest of the year, then use them again next year. No waste, and you still get to 'discover' presents one by one. We're using wrapping paper for DD's first Christmas though.

CranfordScones · 24/12/2023 22:47

If it wasn't wrapped then you'd be instantly disappointed.

Whereas wrapping allows you to experience anticipation, excitement and fun before you get to the dashed hopes and disappointment.

Mine's a Bailey's. A big one. Merry Christmas.

We started doing “cracker bags” like this. Instead of wasting money on crackers with tat in we do Christmas patterned cotton bags with a scratch card, a nice wrapped chocolate and mini bottle of booze or hot chocolate stick in.

AmyandPhilipfan · 24/12/2023 22:53

I always wrap for extended family. But I don't wrap for my kids at Christmas. Santa never wrapped for me and my brother when we were kids and apparently he never did for my mum and her siblings so I've just carried the tradition on. Thinking about it, my mum was a war baby so maybe that's why presents were initially not wrapped, due to rationing, but my grandma carried on doing it and then so did my mum and now so do I. Stockings are hung on the mantelpiece and then when Santa comes he fills them and lays them on certain parts of the sofa/armchair for each child and lays out bigger presents around them. Still always exciting, much less waste and no last minute wrapping!

When I was a kid it was even more exciting as our living room would always be locked when we went down on Christmas Day morning and we would get dressed and have breakfast all the while keeping on rushing to check the door to see if 'the magic had worn off yet.' Eventually we would check again and the door would open and the excitement of going into a dark living room and seeing the presents in piles in front of us was immense! I never once caught my dad unlocking the door! Sadly I can't do that for my kids as our living room door doesn't shut properly and even if it did I have no key for it.

My dd would agree with you@Hatewrappingpresents She sees it as a waste. She has amassed quite a few Amazon gift bags & reuses them every year.
I have gone back to parcel paper, reusing ribbons from previous years and this year have bought fancy printed eco parcel tape so most can be recycled or burnt as fire starters in our wood burner.

flowerchild2000 · 24/12/2023 22:56

It's fun...? It's not compulsory.

My grandmother saved everything she could and reused every year. She had gift tags and decorations from the 40's-50's that emerged every year. She would always say "be careful with that!" I try to save everything I can but nowadays things are so flimsy. Gift bags are probably the most reusable.

StragglyTinsel · 24/12/2023 22:58

My mum didn’t wrap Christmas presents when I was a child. It felt much less special. Just getting a bag of stuff.

I wrap everything for my children. I make it all look nice They love coming down to lovely wrapped presents under the tree. And they enjoy the time it takes to unwrap each thing - not knowing what it is or guessing at it before it’s unwrapped.

BooBooBaloo · 24/12/2023 23:03

I wrap presents, and disguise them - small presents go in much larger boxes for wrapping etc. It means people don't guess before they open!

buckeejit · 24/12/2023 23:10

Also, for dh & will be same for dc when they're a bit older, I wrap sturdy boxes with lids separately in paper & wrap it with a ribbon. Some of my boxes have been on the go for 10 years+

To not see the point of wrapping presents?
mrsfollowill · 24/12/2023 23:18

I've done all wrapping tonight - we are a small family- literally DH, adult DS me and my mum for lunch tomorrow (last grandparent standing sadly)- DH has a massive extended family but MIL and FIL have both died now. We don't buy for our siblings by mutual agreement- and youngest nephew is 18 now so no longer buy for them.

I sat down tonight and got a big gift bag to put my mums presents in- but I normally wrap them. She is 80 and poorly and I just know she would be thrilled to take the paper off so I wrapped them individually and then put them in the gift bag. She will know what I've got her there are things I buy her every year as a tradition- eg I always get her a wall calendar and she writes down everything on it- everyone's birthday, all her appointments- any visitors scheduled.

I guess it just adds that edge of anticipation- DH and DS mostly have 'useful stuff' , alcohol and pants and socks! I still wrap them up Xmas Grin I've bought my own gifts from from mum as she is too ill to go shopping as mostly housebound - she will give cash to DS and DH tomorrow.

rockpoolingtogether · 24/12/2023 22:16

But even then, I would wrap in newspaper

Half the presents under out tree are wrapped in news paper Xmas Grin

'Tis fine, it delays the reveal and is eco friendly.

OrangeryAt · 24/12/2023 21:51

You could extend this to anything though couldn't you? I mean, tomorrow, why bother serving the food in dishes? Why not just stick it on the table in the pans you cooked it in? Save on some washing up.

😂😂😂😂 this cracked me up!

WithIcePlease · 24/12/2023 23:25

I bought a vast pile of gift bags of various sizes 5 years ago in the sales. I really don't like wrapping. As long as the actual gift is hidden, I think it's ok. I also leave stuff in the packing it arrived in with no gift bag as long as they can't tell what's inside. I lose a few every year to family members but enough still for DC'sgifts. Also use Xmas patterned plastic sacks for big stuff
