Who should get the stuff from the shop?

Minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but wondered what mumsnet thinks.

Partner works away, he's been away since Monday and has a 300 mile drive home this afternoon. In his absence I've been doing last minute Christmas shopping (food and presents), cleaning the house, entertaining family yesterday, wrapping presents, and looking after our toddler. I took Friday off work to get the above things done. I've basically been none stop since Friday morning until Saturday evening and today I really didn't want to leave the house and wanted to have a chill day with toddler before tomorrow.

We need 5 items from the shop that I've forgotten to get (the lists were really long of both family presents and Christmas food, so easily done to miss some things). I'm contemplating asking partner to get these at some point on his journey home, but given it's already a journey that will take him 5-6 ish hours and traffic might be bad on Christmas Eve, I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable to ask him to do this simply because I didn't want to have to leave the house with toddler today after 2 back to back manic days.

So, mumsnet, am I being unreasonable to ask this of my partner? If so I'll suck it up and go myself! Just dreading the shops today, they were bad enough yesterday and Friday!

Why does everyone on MN live somewhere “very rural”? 🤣

Everyone? Or, erm. One person on this thread 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️😂

It sounds like you won’t desperately need these items until after Christmas so either order them from Amazon or text your husband and say if he is in the services on his way back and can pick them up for you, that’s good but if not you can both pop out and collect them between Christmas and New Year.

lalaland2024 · 24/12/2023 12:22

Cat food is on the list too, poor cat won't be impressed if we don't feed him til Boxing Day. Although he could just live on tuna and turkey I guess😬

@BookishBabe

Ooh thank you! I'll have a look now

If you are rural, it’s unlikely your coop will be busy. Just pop in there. A 20-30 min round trip and it’s all done. Or wait till Boxing Day

The lanes aren't suitable for walking along with a buggy - think very, very rural. Winding countryside roads with tractors sort of rural.

Do you drive?

lalaland2024 · 24/12/2023 12:36

Thank you to whoever suggested Iceland same day delivery - I've managed to get all the stuff we needed for delivery this afternoon 😀

I think you're being very unreasonable to expect your husband to stop off to do shopping when he's got such a long drive.

BookishBabe · 24/12/2023 12:37

You're welcome!!!
You can chill and your DH can get home to you as soon as possible!
Glad I was helpful 😊

CrapBucket · 24/12/2023 12:41

Glad you have it sorted. Fwiw I drive long distances regularly and it’s no worse by needing to stop at a shop. If I was your DH I’d have happily done that. Preferably with you providing me the postcode of a suitable shop so I could update sat nav.

Bbq1 · 24/12/2023 12:47

Co op are also great at deli on the day. I've got ine coming later.

Cornishclio · 24/12/2023 12:51

Are you really going to be doing laundry on Christmas day? Use carriers or cardboard box for rubbish and get those things at the corner shop Boxing day.

No need for the eye roll, I didn’t eye roll at you. It’s just a joke.

It’s just a thing on MN, like “everyone” earning “only £70K which isn’t a lot in London you know” or having the Magical Chicken that Feeds 6 for a Week.
The number of people who are “very rural” on MN far exceeds the % you’d expect given the population spread in the U.K.

Break and walk - good in a long drive

lalaland2024 · 24/12/2023 12:58

@Testina

Well in all honesty your comment sounded a bit sarky and shitty to me 🤷‍♀️ as though you were implying I don't live where I say I do. I mean, I can take a photo out of my window of the hills and farmland surrounding us as proof if you'd like? 🤔

With a 2 year old I find myself doing laundry most days unfortunately. They are messy creatures 😂

I’m sorry it came across that way to you, then. It definitely wasn’t intended that way. My use of 🤣 was supposed to show I was joking around, I’d have used 🙄 or 🤨 if I was accusing you of lying!
I’m glad you’ve got the Iceland delivery sorted.
Have a 🍪 Xmas biscuit emoji from me - explicitly explained that it’s a season of goodwill apology for understanding biscuit, and not a typical MN biscuit 😆

britnay · 24/12/2023 13:21

I live rurally and places like deliveroo, whoosh etc don't deliver here. We can't even get any takeaways delivered here.

Ju1ieAndrews · 24/12/2023 13:23

This is not a big deal; just text him and say "when you stop for petrol can you grab some washing liquid and bin bags" (or whatever it is you need).

It'll add an extra couple of minutes onto his day and he'll probably be standing mere metres from the stuff you need as he's paying anyway 🤷‍♀️
