Who should get the stuff from the shop?

Minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but wondered what mumsnet thinks.

Partner works away, he's been away since Monday and has a 300 mile drive home this afternoon. In his absence I've been doing last minute Christmas shopping (food and presents), cleaning the house, entertaining family yesterday, wrapping presents, and looking after our toddler. I took Friday off work to get the above things done. I've basically been none stop since Friday morning until Saturday evening and today I really didn't want to leave the house and wanted to have a chill day with toddler before tomorrow.

We need 5 items from the shop that I've forgotten to get (the lists were really long of both family presents and Christmas food, so easily done to miss some things). I'm contemplating asking partner to get these at some point on his journey home, but given it's already a journey that will take him 5-6 ish hours and traffic might be bad on Christmas Eve, I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable to ask him to do this simply because I didn't want to have to leave the house with toddler today after 2 back to back manic days.

So, mumsnet, am I being unreasonable to ask this of my partner? If so I'll suck it up and go myself! Just dreading the shops today, they were bad enough yesterday and Friday!

Anyway toddler will be better off going out for a walk ideally

gotomomo · 24/12/2023 12:07

Mike and a half, walk - take bugggy

Zanatdy · 24/12/2023 12:07

It’s hard going doing a long drive so no I’d just go and get it done. It’s not too bad out there today

ZiriForGood · 24/12/2023 12:09

If he is driving 6 hours he needs to make some stop anyway, so he can plan his break somewhere where he can get both coffee and a few things

gotomomo · 24/12/2023 12:09

Forget delivery unless you are city centre, people here forget whoosh doesn't exist in most locations and our only deliveroo drivers (has to be powered as distances too far for bikes) went back to Poland for Christmas, it's a married couple Grin delights of semi rural living

Get things like bin bags and washing powder delivered? On Christmas Eve? Is this possible? If so please tell me how 😂

Of course it is! Deliveroo Grocery, Tesco Whoosh, Amazon Grocery etc all do non food items like that, usually delivered within half an hour. They basically deliver most things you can get in a supermarket.

Tumbleweed101 · 24/12/2023 12:09

Unless urgent for today I'd just pop out alone on boxing day to grab those kind of bits and leave toddler with dad.

The lanes aren't suitable for walking along with a buggy - think very, very rural. Winding countryside roads with tractors sort of rural.

I live in a village and can get Whoosh, Deliveroo etc.

Edit to add, just checked the Deliveroo app and I could get a delivery from Morrisons, Sainsbury’s or Co-op within 25 mins and I am nowhere near a city.

Lovingitallnow · 24/12/2023 12:11

If it's anything like Ireland the shops will be dead today. It's nothing like yesterday or Friday. Most people dread Christmas Eve in the shops but actually everyone is at home doing prep and the only people in the shops are people who've forgot 2 or 3 things.

lalaland2024 · 24/12/2023 12:11

@TheFlis

Wow I did not know this. I assumed all online supermarket deliveries would be a few days in advance, not same day. I'll have a look now, thank you!

So the things I've forgotten aren't anything we need for the Christmas dinner, it's things like washing powder, bin bags, that sort of thing. The general household stuff that got forgotten about because I was focusing on the gifts / Christmas food🙈 So come to think of it I'm not even sure he will get those things at a services will he?

YBU IMO to ask him to brave the shops on xmas eve, after a 300m drive to get non essential items.

Can you get them after Christmas?

MassageForLife · 24/12/2023 12:11

A mile and a half is, what, a thirty minute walk?

Traffic is unlikely to be bad. I'm in the middle of the city at the moment and it's really really quiet.

Savedpassword · 24/12/2023 12:11

I wouldn’t ask somebody who is doing a six hour drive on Christmas Eve no.

A 1.5 mile walk sounds like a reasonable way to get some fresh air and means that neither of you have to navigate a supermarket car park today.

Woahtherehoney · 24/12/2023 12:11

you could ask but if I was you I’d just go get it - if they do sell those things at services the prices will be extortionate, and it’s Sunday trading so the bigger supermarkets will close at 4 (some 5 today) which just leaves convenience shops.

you’ll know better than us if he’ll be annoyed about having to stop. If you think he might be, or might not be able to stop somewhere in time, then go get it

I’d do the shop myself. I’m usually the first to say make the man do it if you’ve done so much but if he’s got a long drive and cooking tomorrow I’d just get it done.

I would be keeping my feet up all day tomorrow though.

Well it would be a 3 mile walk as it's 1.5 each way, and as I've explained already it's not possible to safely navigate the lanes where we live with a buggy - they are very narrow and there's no path at the side.

YABU. It's Christmas Eve and likely the shops will be mental. Could potentially add an extra hour to a long journey.

Do you really really need the things? Carrier bags can be used as bin bags.

Testina · 24/12/2023 12:15

Why does everyone on MN live somewhere “very rural”? 🤣

Hesma · 24/12/2023 12:15

Surely you can manage without those bits until Tuesday/Wednesday?

Nope. 22nd and 23rd are mental. People try to avoid supermarkets on the 24th. It will probably be the quietest Sunday of the year in my store.

BookishBabe · 24/12/2023 12:20

Iceland are still doing same day delivery slots by me (West mdilands).
It's £6 but they do decent deals on washing powders and such.

You only have until 1:15pm to finalise an order though. But worth a check!

Who should get the stuff from the shop?
PuppyMonkey · 24/12/2023 12:21

I wouldn’t be very pleased if you asked me to stop off for bin liners and washing powder today, just let him get home and sod the bins and laundry till day after Boxing Day.

Ablondiebutagoody · 24/12/2023 12:21

The Co-Op is a mile and a half away and hardly likely to be "manic". I would stop being dramatic and go and get the stuff. You will be home in 20 minutes!
