The Home Secretary "jokes" about spiking his wifes drink with Rohypnol

"James Cleverly has apologised for joking about spiking his wife’s drink with a date rape drug in comments made at a Downing Street reception.
The home secretary’s remarks came just hours after the Home Office announced plans to crack down on spiking, when someone puts drugs into another person’s drink or directly into their body without their knowledge or consent.

Cleverly told female guests at the reception that “a little bit of Rohypnol in her drink every night” was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit”, the Sunday Mirror reported.
He also laughed that the secret to a long marriage was ensuring your spouse was “someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there”."

So much to say about this

I want the Home Secretary of our country to treat drugging and rape as a serious matter.

It would be mildly amusing if the Rwandan president was reported as being uncomfortable with the attitudes of the British state to serious issues.

It may well have happened - we'd never hear about it.

Alternatively, maybe Lawrence Fox and Donald Trump will get together and release a charity single to support James Cleverly.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2023 14:06

Can you imagine if he'd made an offensive joke about say Irish people at a party for Irish people?

"Did you hear the one about the Irishman who"

You would think that he would have more common sense than that.

I guess he has fuck all common sense. Or judgement. Or political awareness.

I'd bloody love to know what the reaction was.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2023 14:09

I wonder if Isabel Oakeshott was there?

@HRTQueen

But he made the comment at a Downing Street event attended by multiple people. He didn't need to 'lighten the mood'. He didn't need 'gallows humour' which I understand is a much needed remedy for emergency service people in difficult times.

My question is, if he, in the same situation (a Downing Street event, in his role as Home Secretary) made the following jokes, would you really, honestly still say he shouldn't lose his job as a consequence?

A 'dark joke' about black people being abused in police custody hours after announcing measures to reduce racism in the force?

A 'dark joke' about physically disabled people being easier to sexually assault hours after announcing measures to reduce the abuse of disabled people?

Nobody who says he shouldn't lose his job because it was a joke seems keen on letting everyone know what they would think if the 'joke' had been as above...

I don’t work in emergency services the comments don’t need to be made but are and some are inappropriate but are meant to be that is the joke in what has been said

I’m guessing the subject of conversation was around the announcement made earlier and the comment was meant to be inappropriate

inappropriate remarks are made at times that lighten the mood retelling some of the comments the humour (that not everyone will find amusing) is lost

now saying what he said in a speech at a conference would be completely different

I can imagine a Home Secretary making a joke about starving the Irish. It's not that difficult actually ...

Brexit: Tory MP backtracks over food scarcity in Ireland

No-deal remarks ‘taken out of context’, claims former cabinet minister Priti Patel

It was a social event for political journalists.

I would love to have seen the reaction. I wonder if anyone called him out. Bearing in mind he is in a powerful position

Gallows humour doesn't tend to be expressed around journalists ! This thread.is depressing, so many people thinking this is ok Confused

Tinkerbyebye · 24/12/2023 14:16

i would want to hear the whole conversation, all sides before I make my mind up as to how serious it is

context is everything

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 24/12/2023 14:16

It’s quite baffling that people are defending the Home Secretary to make a joke about drugging a woman with a date rape drug in a room full of women

How many of those women have been the victim of date rape drugs? How many have been spiked on a night out? And there stands the man ultimately in charge of measures to reduce it having a wee laugh about it? Totally inappropriate

The reason the announcement was made yesterday was because it’s an ever increasing crime.

Edited

In which context is saying that using a little bit of a date rape drug isn’t really illegal ok?

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 24/12/2023 14:17

It's just so depressing, and so disappointing, that you barely have to scratch the surface to find out that this is the way that the men who run this country think. Do I think he actually drugs and rapes his wife, or course not. Just so depressing he thinks the optics of this are fine, and so does everyone else obviously because he's not going to face any consequences

I wonder if he knew anything about the experiences of the women listening to that conversation?

It's not about being offended, it's about being concerned that this man in this position has these thoughts. And thinks it's okay to share them.

At least he's telling us who he is.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2023 14:24

"a little bit of Rohypnol in her drink every night” was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit"

But I suppose if any of the women there had said "actually, that's not funny. This happened to me and I was raped on a night out" They would have been accused of taking it seriously and darkening the mood so they would probably have kept quiet. Who wants to be seen as a kiljoy when it comes to calling out blokes?

There was no scratching of any surface. He chose to say this and he chose where and when. It's as simple as he is.

whatsitcalledwhen · 24/12/2023 14:30

@HRTQueen

now saying what he said in a speech at a conference would be completely different

It was an official Downing Street event attended by multiple journalists. He is the Home Secretary and was there in that official capacity.

Does that honestly not change your view on whether or not he should be either suspended or fired?

BIossomtoes · 24/12/2023 14:31

It’s absolutely unbelievable that on a site which is predominantly female there are apologists for this kind of thing. Cleverly is an absolute embarrassment, it’s only a couple of weeks since his Stockton/shit gaffe. It’s frankly appalling that there are women who defend his behaviour.

SerendipityJane · 24/12/2023 14:33

Not really.

crumblingschools · 24/12/2023 14:33

@MilaSov are you happy for most girls in school to have to put up with misogynistic ‘banter’ as there should be no barriers

TravelInHope · 24/12/2023 14:38

Oh it’s just a joke. He probably hasn’t done it for ages.

verdantverdure · 24/12/2023 14:40

James Cleverly making a joke about controlling women by drugging them clearly demonstrates that our Home Secretary doesn’t take VAWG seriously,

Furthermore, in order to find the topic a joking matter iI think he must hold misogynistic views.

ToWhitToWhoo · 24/12/2023 14:44

I know someone who suffered for many years from PTSD as a result of being date drug raped. It's not a thing to joke about, especially if your job is to keep law and order in the country. And it wasn't a private joke- it was at a Downing Street reception.

But the bar for Home Secretaries has fallen so low that I'm hardly shocked any more. We all knew that Cleverly is a total fool. James Cleverly, MP for Braintree! More like James Stupidly, MP for Mugsville! And he's still not quite as bad (so far) as Suella Braverman.

To think that I once thought that we could never have a worse Home Secretary than Michael Howard!

SerendipityJane · 24/12/2023 14:53

We all knew that Cleverly is a total fool. James Cleverly, MP for Braintree!

It's very hard not to feel the universe was telling us something. But in these strange times, I can see use voting in Prime Minister "Imgonnafuckthepoor" from "crushthepeasants-on-sea" and then somehow having the nerve to be surprised when they do.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 24/12/2023 15:40

It'd barely surprising that these disgusting creatures get away with making such appalling comments when you come onto a predominantly womens' forum and see people falling over themselves to defend this behaviour.

He made those comments at an event he was at in his role as Home Secretary. Having made comments that same day about tackling date rape, to then say "a little bit of rohypnol wouldn't be illegal" is fucking deplorable. I'm dawn offended by the fact that our government justify and excuse this behaviour and try to gaslight the shit out of everybody.

If the Met Chief made these comments at a public event everybody would be calling for them to get the chop, yet we can't apply those same standards to the person with whom the buck is supposed to stop. Its unbelievable.
