3 DC and only one big bag of presents

I don’t understand when people say they’ve been wrapping presents all day.

Eldest DC have two presents to open each, they both got new trainers too which they have already.

Youngest has a few cheap games from Lidl and a kindle fire plus stocking stuff which is all stuff he’ll use.

For family, we don’t buy individual pressies, we do a family pressie instead.

In the past, I used to buy more but most of it just ended up scattered around the house and never used so I don’t bother now. I just don’t get the need to have a big pile of pressies anymore.

It took me max two hours today including bits for one stocking, writing a few cards etc - I was watching TV too so wrapped slowly.

Mine have piles of presents to open tomorrow. Unless you can't afford it, I don't see why people wouldn't want this for their kids. All my presents have been thoughtfully chosen, so it's not about giving them loads of tat.
But hey, we're all different with different priorities.

I can't afford it and they still have loads 🙈. Smaller likes as they are older now and stuff is smaller in size generally but we love Xmas and like to go all out and then have smaller birthday gifts. It's all stuff they will use so not just a waste

Second thread I've seen this morning where people like to talk about how they've bought fuck all for their kids at Christmas.

Only on mumsnet where people regularly post about how 1 million a year salary isnt really just above the poverty line as well.

Its the same every year there's Always s at least one thread with people trying to out miserly each other
While looking down their noses at those common people who like to spoil their kids a bit at xmas.

hattiehitty · 24/12/2023 12:01

You do sound sensible, OP. I don't have mountains to wrap, but it does take time to do, and organise for various people.

The people with their piles and stashes of toys, at the other extreme, it must be very time consuming for.

girlfriend44 · 24/12/2023 01:04

You sound sensible OP.

I'm sure people don't really need loads of presents. What a load of pressure on them too.

No doubt there will be posts saying what was your worst present in a few days time on here.

No doubt things will be taken back to shops and put on Ebay. Makes a mockery of it really.

Look forward to the day people start to phase all this stupidity out.

Yes, this always happens doesn't it.

We used to have a Christmas swaps thread on here for unwanted gifts. I don't know if that's still going.

hattiehitty · 24/12/2023 12:06

Stocking presents don’t get wrapped, surely the stocking is just a glorified gift bag.

I wrap stocking gifts, except chocolates, in tissue paper.

crumblingschools · 24/12/2023 12:08

@JMSA what happens to the piles of stuff you got last year?

CleverLilViper · 24/12/2023 12:14

And yet you used the time saved from wrapping (or indeed shopping) writing a thread to humble brag.

I know that I’d rather spend my time wrapping gifts and shopping than that.

Testina · 24/12/2023 12:17

“I don’t understand when people say they’ve been wrapping presents all day.”

Aw, bless you and the rest of the hard of thinking at Xmas time ❤️

WorseWorst · 24/12/2023 12:19

I am sorry you have issues with understanding. Hopefully this thread will help you x

You can't see why people wouldn't want that? This is the horrible sort of commercialism many of us try to avoid. A few choice, good quality presents can also be far more expensive than the toy mountains you see on social media.
Most of it will end up in landfill.

WorseWorst · 24/12/2023 12:20

GreenWheat · 24/12/2023 06:21

The smug, faux-naivete Christmas threads are getting rather tiresome. We've had "I don't understand why people are leaving buying presents so late", "I don't understand why people find cooking on Christmas day so stressful", "I don't understand why people make a big deal out of hosting in laws", etc etc, all accompanied by a humblebrag from the OP about how easy this has been for them. People have different lives, families, and ways of doing things. That's not hard to understand, surely?

Yes it makes me cringe so much! Do they want medals?

And then the faux innocent wide-eyed ‘am I doing it all wrong?’

That's nice dear.

Haha from one old skool mner to another 😄

Grinchwithlove · 24/12/2023 12:33

It not whats under the tree it who you have around it.

Sunnydays0101 · 24/12/2023 12:51

You’re absolutely marvellous, go you.

PurBal · 24/12/2023 13:00

I am lucky because I delegate wrapping of Father Christmas’s gifts (about half my total) to Grandma. (I used to love wrapping but less so now I have young children).

gotomomo · 24/12/2023 13:01

Took me 45 mins to wrap everything but my dc are grown up and those Taylor Swift tickets were ££££.

Butchyrestingface · 24/12/2023 13:05

I don't understand why you don't understand.

Are you just being:

  1. Goady
  2. Obtuse
  3. Attention-seeking
  4. All of the above?

crumblingschools · 24/12/2023 12:08

@JMSA what happens to the piles of stuff you got last year?

It gets used. I have teens and an older daughter, so it tends to be clothing, shoes, perfume, cosmetics, etc.

User56785 · 24/12/2023 13:52

Maybe they did have too much before then if they were scattering it all over the house.

I know my adult kids would be disappointed with 2 gifts, and I wouldn't be content with it either. It's not exactly very exciting, and they don't get presents from any other family member.

I've cut down this year because they're all adults but I couldn't bear to disappoint them either. Mine are getting between 5 and 9 presents (similar value) and that is less than they have ever got.

Why would you buy 9 presents for an adult? Are you sure it's all stuff they want and are happy to receive?

OH has 11.Grin

Chickpea17 · 24/12/2023 14:39

They’ve bought more for their kids and wider family/ friends than you.

AmyDudley · 24/12/2023 14:48

I'm going to throw away everything I've spent time wrapping, and make sure my Christmas is just like yours, I've seen the error of my ways.

How dare people do things differently from your family ? Some of them may have more children, extended family coming for Christmas, have bought several cheaper items rather than expensive things like kindle Fire and trainers, some of them may be giving their kids the presents on the day instead of giving them pre-Christmas.

But having different requirements from another family is no excuse for having more wrapping than another person. These people need to get a grip and learn from you, then next year they can come on MN and pass judgement badly disguised as faux incomprehension.

KThnxBye · 24/12/2023 14:50

So glad to have inspired some festive spirit 😁

I’m still surrounded by wrapping paper, ribbons, and quality street, and will be for some hours yet. Having a great time, and so are the kids! They are excited about handing over their carefully chosen, happily wrapped and labelled gifts to their recipients tomorrow and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. I haven’t counted them, and I won’t be, but it looks like the North Pole in here and why not!

Tis the season! Merry Christmas to all!
