3 DC and only one big bag of presents

I don’t understand when people say they’ve been wrapping presents all day.

Eldest DC have two presents to open each, they both got new trainers too which they have already.

Youngest has a few cheap games from Lidl and a kindle fire plus stocking stuff which is all stuff he’ll use.

For family, we don’t buy individual pressies, we do a family pressie instead.

In the past, I used to buy more but most of it just ended up scattered around the house and never used so I don’t bother now. I just don’t get the need to have a big pile of pressies anymore.

It took me max two hours today including bits for one stocking, writing a few cards etc - I was watching TV too so wrapped slowly.

In the past, when my parents were alive and my 6 kids were little ( all but one are adults now), the sheer number of presents and costs used to make me feel ill. In the floor in the sitting room it looked a like someone had been projectile commuting wrapping paper and toys. I buy one or two presents each and wish I didn’t have to get or receive any tbh.

Velvian · 24/12/2023 08:13

I'm totally shite at wrapping too. I cannot secure 2 sides of paper together without somehow wrapping sellotape round my fingers first.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 24/12/2023 08:13

@Workway that math is brilliant, thanks Grin

Of course you understand. You just want to have a dig at people who buy more presents than you do. It doesn't necessarily even mean they are spending loads - some people prefer to get multiple small presents.

My dc usually get 2 presents each too, but there will be 7 other people here on Christmas Day whose presents (mostly 2 each, occasionally 3) I needed to wrap too, and yes it took me ages!

You do Christmas how you want. There's really no need to start disingenuous 'But I don't understand!' threads.

QuillBill · 24/12/2023 08:16

One of my relatives wraps beautifully. Her presents always look phenomenal. I bet it takes her longer than a day.

We don't do family presents. We do individual presents for each person. So where you are wrapping one present I'm wrapping twelve.

My dc more than two presents.

NahHumBrag · 24/12/2023 08:16

It only took me an afternoon to wrap all my presents - just for my very aged parents and best friend.

And you know what OP, it makes me fucking sad that my sibling is shit, I’m single and don’t have kids (don’t actually mind the last bit - love them but never wanted them). I’d love to be having a huge great Christmas with my extended family and to have had loads of people to buy and wrap for, but it’s never happened.

Don’t be a dick OP

Here's a halo.

I hope Judith hasn't bought the wrapping paper with the stickers on as she is going to been an extra two and a half hours just for that.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/12/2023 08:18

You obv have older kids so buying trainees prob named are a cost

I have a 6yr and have bought lots of little small things some costing £1-2 as well as little live pets so £20 - plus inbetween stuff at £5

So has quite a few presents but prob cost in total maybe £150

Haven't added it up

Have one child

I also do

Something wants - needs - wear - reads

Then

Have nieces nephews grandad friends secret Santa (stuff from poundshop silly /fun - not costly)

Plus then dh from dd and I and he has lots of small silly stuff like socks pants shower gel plus then bigger /costly stuff

So in all have probably wrapped 80 presents

QueenOfMOHO · 24/12/2023 08:18

I have noticed that some of my richer/old money acquaintances, like to have a bit of a sneer at people who they feel overspend at Christmas. They consider it common.
They are overall a rather joyless bunch and I know where I'd rather spend Christmas.

Desecratedcoconut · 24/12/2023 08:19

Who takes 8 minutes to wrap one present? What are you doing?

Takes me that long, arthritis in fingers is a bugger.

Gowlett · 24/12/2023 08:23

This no I’ll do the same next year. We’ve cut back on family presents. But a Santa is bringing to much for DS. It’s overwhelming for him, too. I might keep some until his birthday.

Sorry Queen, as soon as I posted it I thought of my Dad who had arthritis. Presumably in workways scenario they don't all struggle. I hope your family don't expect wrapped presents though, a gift bag and tissue paper would be a lot easier.

Could take her even longer if she has a few large glasses of vino to help her along...

You don’t understand that some people do Christmas differently to you? You’re probably not very bright, then.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 24/12/2023 08:28

All families are not like yours! Hope that helps!

Who takes 8 minutes to wrap one present? What are you doing?

Takes me a while. And I like to add bows and they can be fiddly.

Ashtara10 · 24/12/2023 08:32

I have 4 DC and my niece living here. So even 10 things each (smaller things) is still 50 presents. Then the stockings (which I like to wrap even chocolate as they like this tradition!) Then they want the pets presents wrapped from Santa too. It all adds up even without going mad financially.

girlfriend44 · 24/12/2023 01:04

You sound sensible OP.

I'm sure people don't really need loads of presents. What a load of pressure on them too.

No doubt there will be posts saying what was your worst present in a few days time on here.

No doubt things will be taken back to shops and put on Ebay. Makes a mockery of it really.

Look forward to the day people start to phase all this stupidity out.

I agree with you

Desecratedcoconut · 24/12/2023 08:19

Who takes 8 minutes to wrap one present? What are you doing?

In fairness the eight minutes was just an example to illustrate to @FuckityFuckBollocks that if you are doing more of something, it takes longer.

Undineimmor · 24/12/2023 08:37

Each to their own. My friend gets her only child about 35 presents. She has health problems, couldn't have more kids and adores her son, they are a really happy family unit. What's wrong with that?

I did find that sometimes we had presents that were discarded by Boxing Day but these were presents the kids had asked for and wanted but that just turned out to be a little but rubbish. These days, I always ask what they want and buy only the things they ask for. Saves from unwanted present syndrome.

You enjoy your Christmas OP and don't worry what anyone else is doing.

Beautiful3 · 24/12/2023 08:44

I feel you, I already gave one child her present, because it's a hamster. The other child is a teenager, so her presents are small and expensive. Their pile looks tiny! But I've added fluffy socks in a box, boboa tea sets, slime, lush sets and books just to make their present pile look better. I think when they're little, their presents are larger, so the present pile looks huge. When they get older they want clothes/trainer and jewellery, which looks small under the tree. But good for you for not stressing about it, and adding to it.

hot2trotter · 24/12/2023 08:51

Get a grip.
Maybe these people who spend a longer time wrapping than you do - shock horror - buy more presents than you do, or have more people to buy for than you do. It's really not hard to understand.

theexceliconisgreen · 24/12/2023 09:00

I think you've phrased it wrong. You do understand that other folks wrapping takes longer because they buy so much more what you don't understand is why they buy more. But as other posters have said everyone has their own traditions, different size family etc..
