Help! Replacement broken bauble

Help! Apologies for shamelessly using AIBU for traffic.

Disaster struck our house this evening when DDs 'my first Christmas bauble' from Mamas and Papas (2007) got knocked off the tree and smashed. She's a sentimental 16 year old who is absolutely gutted about this.

Yes, there were tears. Yes, some people will think tears are over the top; but, like I say, she's a sentimental old thing who has always spoken about having these baubles on her own tree one day.

We're going to attempt a glue job, and a new one wouldn't really be the same, but I'd like to try to get hold of another one if possible in addition, in case our attempts are futile.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried ebay and general searches to no avail. It's a large red bauble with 'My first Christmas 2007' written on and a drawing of Father Christmas on it. It came in a largish square box. I appreciate its not the type of thing people sell, but if I can find another or there's a magic Christmas fairy out there who can help, it might just save Christmas!

Have you a pic?

Baubletears · 23/12/2023 01:06

I'm trying to find one. I can't see any on my current phone or online 🤦‍♀️I'll keep looking.

Help! Replacement broken bauble

Can't help on replacement but something I've seen suggested on the Disney pages for broken baubles is to "upcycle" them as it were

Perhaps put the broken pieces into a fillable bauble so they're together still
Or mosaic them on to a plain ceramic bauble
Or place them in a frame

I’d just do this or as good a repair as you can as it’s the sentiment attached to the actual bauble .

Baubletears · 23/12/2023 01:27

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, I told DD we definitely wouldn't be throwing it away, and a patched up bauble will give it character!

Thanks for the additional ideas @ButWhatAboutTheBees , I hadn't thought of those x

It really is the sentiment. She's a real softie, and I know a replacement won't really cut it.

Loving the other ideas in case the glueing doesn't work out though 😊

Can you do whatever that Japanese thing is with the gold to fill (or stick) the cracks

BetsyBobbins · 23/12/2023 01:31

"Disaster struck our house this evening when DDs 'my first Christmas bauble' from Mamas and Papas..."

I had to stop reading after that. I thought it was going to be a fire, a flood, a burglary. A broken bauble from Mammas and effing Pappas? I've read some out of touch middle class stuff here but this one is particularly irritating.

You can always try the Repair Shop though, see if they take your non existent disaster story

Baubletears · 23/12/2023 01:32

Sadly it's completely smashed. I think I can piece it together, it's just whether or not it will stay stuck! It's very delicate (as evidenced by the dozen pieces it's now in 🙄)

Thanks for this. Really helpful. You're a gem BetsyBobbins

I would do the repair and place inside a clear bauble casement as the other poster suggested. I have a number of repaired and imperfect decorations and I think they are beautiful regardless.

Thanks Harold. I think you're right. It adds delightful character.

Did writing that post make you feel good? You know you’re speaking to a real person, whose biggest crime is using a bit of hyperbole?

Wise up.

You are a truly nasty person. I'm actually one of the people who has had a terrible disaster happen to my family in the last month and even I don't see a problem with the Op. Her tone was light hearted, the words she used yes may have hyperbole in them, but it actually made me smile to see her trying to cheer up her daughter.

Wallawallakoala · 23/12/2023 02:05

Is there any point posting a rubbish reply when the op is asking for help?

I’ve had a Google and image search op and can’t find much to help I’m sorry 😔

MrsSparkington · 23/12/2023 02:07

You could try contacting Mamas and Papas just in case they keep some baubles from each year. Might be worth a shot?

Wallawallakoala · 23/12/2023 02:08

someone had a similar situation where they emailed Mamas and Papas to see if they had old stock it might be a long shot but worth a try?

BetsyBobbins · 23/12/2023 02:08

It actually did make me feel better, someone had to point it out to her she was being ridiculous.
@Ella31 I also had disaster in my life and in my family, as recently as two months ago, maybe that's why the hyperbole and casual tone over a stupid keepsake made my teeth itch, some people are completely detached from reality

Baubletears · 23/12/2023 02:15

Thanks everyone. I've emailed Mamas and Papas, see if they get back to me.

Yes, sadly not everyone can read irony and the tongue in cheek hyperbole in my initial post, a vain attempt at reducing the boredom of such a thread.

But, I am suitably chastised, and will spend the remainder of the weekend thinking about my middle class out-of-touch life.

Thanks again for you lovely people with helpful comments. You restore my faith in human nature.

Oh for goodness sake. Everyone else who read OP’s post knew she didn’t mean disaster in that way. If someone tells you they had a bad day because they missed the bus and had to walk in the rain, do you tell them they aren’t in a war zone so have no right to call it a bad day? You’re just embarrassing yourself with such a dramatic a response to what is clearly a gentle thread. Relax.

Op - no advice unfortunately but hope you figure something out. A sentimental teenage girl is hardly a rarity even if some bellends believe otherwise.
