Sudden panic about baby having MMR?

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 07:57

I’m not an anti vaxxer. I want him to have it I just get anxiety. Will it make him unwell? Will he have diarrhoea? Will he stop sleeping? What if they give the wrong dose?

It’s a one dose shot, so don’t worry about that.
Read up about the after effects, and get some Calpol in.

fatandhappy47 · 22/12/2023 08:00

They won't give the wrong dose

With mine, they were a bit grizzly for about a day, nothing some calpol didn't fix

Much better than getting measles (my youngest was really ill with measles as caught before MMR age) mumps or German measles

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 22/12/2023 08:27

It’s common to be a bit concerned but it must be millions of children who’ve had it by now. Mine seemed fine afterwards as I remember, I had calpol ready but check current guidance. Rates of immunisation are not great in some parts of the country so there is a risk that your child could catch one or more of the diseases as a child or an adult and be really ill and if unlucky be left with life changing impairments.

Morechocmorechoc · 22/12/2023 08:29

I was nervous too, but so glad when it's done. It wasn't as bad as some of the others as they are older for it so I wouldn't stress.

Penguinmouse · 22/12/2023 08:29

Baby got MMR vaccine last night as it happens - we gave her calpol about 20 mins before our appointment and after the big cry when the needle went in she’s been fairly happy since. She had a big sleep after but she had also been at nursery. The nurse can talk you through any concerns.

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 08:30

Thanks I’m worried that we are going to an event tomorrow, will it be awful? Appointment is 11:30 today….

Most of the side effects of the MMR kick in 7-10 days later so your little one should be fine today but also do make a mental note of the things to look out for in a week or so, so you don't panic then.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/12/2023 08:34

I'd google the complications of Measles. Far more concerning than the vaccination.

Helenloveslee4eva · 22/12/2023 08:34

Chances are he won’t even notice.
Significant rise in measles cases currently and he’d be a whole lot sicker if he got it.
Personally I’m so old I had measles at 3 and it was “ uncomplicated “ but mum I hallucinated for a couple of days and mum worried I would die.

Cosifantutrifrutti · 22/12/2023 08:37

I don’t remember my son having any bad reaction. I think he was maybe a bit grumpy after but it didn’t make him ill. As others have said, have calpol on hand and plan for a quiet day after.

TheLurpackYears · 22/12/2023 08:46

Yes, you might spend some of the event comforting an uncomfortable baby, follow the advice on dosing with calpol and make sure ou have easy access to food and drink for your self so you can focus on caring for your baby.

Nancy1906 · 22/12/2023 08:48

What are your concerns OP?

I wasn’t allowed to have the MMR. I had all 3 diseases instead, leaving me with hearing damage. I also passed them onto my dad.

Get the MMR, OP.

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 08:54

@OneMoreTime23 it’s going ahead I’m just worried about side effects and what to expect. Sorry that happened to you.

@Nancy1906 worried about side effects as it’s near Xmas, practice isn’t great at explaining things unfortunately

Impossible to give the wrong dose unless they do the same injection twice - which they won't. One of mine had no symptoms, the other had mild symptoms after about a week. Why are you suddenly concerned about this vaccine? Presumably your baby has already had a lot of other ones.

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 08:55

@adnabaam because we have a lot on over the next week. And I always worry about anything medical too.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/mmr-vaccine/

Literally has all the info you need, including side effects

Daisies12 · 22/12/2023 08:55

YABU. Impossible to give wrong dose. Kids die from those illnesses. Speak to the nurse if you have concerns

adnabaam · 22/12/2023 08:57

From the NHS website I linked above:

The MMR vaccine is very safe. Most side effects are mild and do not last long, such as:
• the area where the needle goes in looking red, swollen and feeling sore for 2 to 3 days
• around 7 to 11 days after the injection, babies or young children may feel a bit unwell or develop a high temperature for about 2 or 3 days
Some children might also cry and be upset immediately after the injection. This is normal and they should feel better after a cuddle.
It's important to remember that the possible complications of infectious conditions, such as measles, mumps and rubella, are much more serious.

ItsMyPartyParty · 22/12/2023 08:58

Normal to feel a bit worried about side effects, but both of mine were absolutely fine. A bit of a temperature, a bit clingy.

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 08:58

Thanks. I’m less worried about the actual injection and more about the impact later on but seems it will take a week anyway

My dc had reactions but mostly mild, rash, crying, sore leg for a few days. One had a seizure and had to go to an and e but we were only there for 24 hrs. I do tend to book vaccinations though now at times when it’s not a back holiday etc (or a drs strike so that may be relevant!) personally I’d do it after Xmas just in case

Please don’t do this op. Go to your scheduled appointment.

Any side effects are more than likely to be mild and short lived. All 4 of my children have had the mmr and I can’t even recall any reactions so if they had them, they weren’t memorable!

Please don’t delay your appointment.

Why is Xmas a deciding factor in this?

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 17:03

@Catza it’s not a deciding factor. It’s a factor in why I am concerned as to the reaction.
