Sudden panic about baby having MMR?

I’m not an anti vaxxer. I want him to have it I just get anxiety. Will it make him unwell? Will he have diarrhoea? Will he stop sleeping? What if they give the wrong dose?

I think someone had already posted the NHS link giving you the details if the vaccine.

Here's the link to the unfortunate complications that may occur with Measles.

Grapewrath · 22/12/2023 17:08

The MMR made my child very ill and she ended up in hospital- it was the rubella element of it that affected her joints. It happened a week or so after. She’s fine now.
Just be aware of any differences to your child and get medical help if you notice any. Lots of ‘common side effect’ advice is given but the difficulty is that people assume vaccine damage is normal and don’t get help when it’s necessary.
My younger two then got measles and I have to admit it was very unpleasant but luckily they weren’t hospitalised. It’s a very hard decision, but follow your instincts and stay vigilant

Grapewrath · 22/12/2023 17:09

Also they can’t give the wrong dose so don’t worry about that

Cantgetausername87 · 22/12/2023 17:12

You're doing the right thing and it's normal to feel nervous about it. Make sure you do some research but honestly he'll be fine - just have some calpol on hand. The growing number of diseases previous eradicated through vaccinations should give you some reassurance too and you will feel better once it's done x

Hoglet70 · 22/12/2023 17:13

Like others have said, get the Calpol ready. DS was a bit hot, I remember, but that was it. Definitely better than getting Measles. Try not to worry too much.

HairyMolly1 · 22/12/2023 17:15

Please don't worry. I'm a practice nurse and give these every day.
The vaccine schedule at the moment is to have 1 MMR at 12 months and a 2nd at 3yrs 4months. Some places give the 2nd dose at 18 months. With all vaccines, babies can feel a little under the weather for 24hrs or so. I always tell my parents to give fluids, cuddles and if necessary Calpol.
Up to 3 weeks after the vaccine, a very small proportion of kids can get a rash and/or some swelling in the neck. Both are nothing to worry about.
The MMR is safe as are the other vaccines and as other posters have pointed out, the side effects are so inconsequential compared to the damage the actual diseases can cause.
So don't worry mama. He might be grumpy for 24hrs, he might sail through it, but at least you know you're protecting him and doing the best for him.

HairyMolly1 · 22/12/2023 17:16

And it's impossible to give incorrect dose :)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/12/2023 17:20

DD2 came down with the Measles at 9 months. We were lucky.

You've been lucky that your baby hasn't already caught it - don't push your luck further by delaying for fear of him being a bit grizzly at New Year.

mmtrrr · 22/12/2023 17:30

@HairyMolly1 my baby is already fourteen months, this was their earliest appointment, is that cause for concern?

Not at all.
Practice nurse.

LakeTiticaca · 22/12/2023 17:38

Baby Will be fine. Its hard not to stress about the vaccinations for small babies, I certainly did but apart from being a little cranky for a few hours, all was fine. Measles can be a very dangerous illness so best to have it done x

HairyMolly1 · 22/12/2023 17:50

No darling. Just get it done tomorrow xx
