To think Gastric Sleeve is the only real way now?

I don't really want a Gastric Sleeve, but I think it is the only realistic way of losing weight for me now. I think the hormone Grehlin that they remove during surgery is what ai need to lise weight.

•Tried Ozempic
•I have an under active thyroid
•Have mobility issue that prevents exercise or even walking. Exercise has always just made me starving anyway.
•I enjoy nutritious natural cook from scratch food, but I have a massive appetite and it ruins my slimming efforts. It is definitely physical hunger.
• I cannot sleep if I'm hungry
•I am very short
•PCOS
•PERIMENOPAUSAL
•I have a mood disorder and have to take anti depressants.
•Doctor has referred me for ADHD ASSESSMENT
•Probably not an exhaustive list of the unlikely hood of being able to shed 4-5 stone

AIBU to just bite the bullet and get a Gastric Sleeve?

YABU There are many other things you could try before something so drastic.

Echoing a PP, I had a sleeve gastrectomy 11 years ago. I lost 13st, then had four children and regained 8st. It's a lifelong tool that you have to use - it's easy to regain. I've managed to lose the 8st again and I intend to keep it off this time.

Make sure you think about it really carefully, my friend had one done about 4 years ago, she's lost 12 stone but hates her loose skin and she is in and out of hospital with low sodium which they think was caused by her op, she says she'd rather be fat and happy again, it's not a bed of roses

The long term statistics are an average of 50-60% excess weight still lost after 10 years. So, some people keep less off, some more. Like a PP said I can eat 10 digestive biscuits in one go (thanks cluster feeding!) but not two apples.

Is there any chance your antidepressants are playing a part in this? Mine make me really hungry and I gain a lot every time I end up back on them. The first time I went on them I went from being really underweight, from being sick, to obese. Gained nearly 6 stone. When I went off them to TTC the weight that wouldn't shift for over a decade didn't exactly fall off, but my weight lose efforts actually resulted in weight loss and I went back down to a healthy weight. After my youngest was born I had to go back on them again and the weight and hunger came back. I'm really sensitive to medication and haven't found any other antidepressant I can tolerate. For me the weight gain is better than the effects of not taking this particular antidepressant. I have a friend who has a similar situation with a medication she needs to take,. it's not a uncommon side effect unfortunately.

Same here, I put on one and half stone in six weeks when I went on them a few years ago. I was so unbelievably starving, I remember going for a gentle winter walking activity a few christmas’ ago and getting the shakes half way around and having to get a hot chocolate or I didn’t think I’d make it back to the car. I wanted carbs, carbs, carbs all the time. I ditched them in the new year.

Same with carbs for me and my friend, carbs carbs and more carbs and feeling starving all the time.

I lost 5 stone on the cambridge diet. My theory was, if I was willing to eat hardly anything after a major operation like bariatric surgery, then I should try that before having the surgery.

I lost 5lb per week and after the first week, it got a lot easier to handle. I'm not saying VLCD's are for everyone, but I would seriously consider all non-permanent methods before opting for surgery.

Whichever way you go, I wish you all the luck in the world with it.

I can't believe people suggest calorie counting to severely overweight people, it's not as though that won't have occurred to you. A diet doesn't work unless you can stick to it, if you can't stick to it that is the diets fault, it is not suitable for you.

Also calorie counting is seriously old fashioned and well debunked for sustained weight loss, but that's another thread.

I am sure there is more to try, but it doesn't much sound like you have the heart for it. I am surprised ozempic hasn't worked for you, but again it's not too much use for long term weight loss unless you stay on it.

It does sound like you need your meds sorting, you've a lot to treat there and some will change your appetite.

Longer term, weight loss is about the food you eat. Not calories but what you eat, how your body processes it, when you eat, how often and how much. So one or more of those is out of sync. Exercise is a red herring, over a long time frame a couch potato burns a similar (proportionate) amount of calories as an ultra marathon runner. You don't need to know this but too many people say 'I'm overweight because I can't exercise' so it's good to take it out of the equation.

Anyway, get on the wait list for that sleeve and in the meantime get your meds sorted and see what you can do about what you eat - type, time and frequency. The Zoe program is good if you can afford it, it's not for weightless but for figuring out the best diet for your unique situation. Best of luck.

Best thing I ever did

Yes, unfortunately for many of us is the only solution. I had the gastric sleeve after 20 years of dieting, pills, gyms, and trying every single alternative method for weight loss.

The surgery was life changing. It doesn't mean that you can eat whatever you want without gaining weight. If you eat only crap food you can still gain weight, but you do can have normal balanced meals without gaining weight.

If anything, I would have had the bypass instead of the sleeve. Even on the sleeve, I still have to take some supplements.

You usually regret more the things that you didn't do than the things you do.

Only people really obese or morbid obese can really understand what you're going through, so be careful who you listen. Many people think that obese people can easily change their situation by just dieting or doing exercise which is not as simple in most cases.
