To think Gastric Sleeve is the only real way now?

teltic · 21/12/2023 19:02

I don't really want a Gastric Sleeve, but I think it is the only realistic way of losing weight for me now. I think the hormone Grehlin that they remove during surgery is what ai need to lise weight.

•Tried Ozempic
•I have an under active thyroid
•Have mobility issue that prevents exercise or even walking. Exercise has always just made me starving anyway.
•I enjoy nutritious natural cook from scratch food, but I have a massive appetite and it ruins my slimming efforts. It is definitely physical hunger.
• I cannot sleep if I'm hungry
•I am very short
•PCOS
•PERIMENOPAUSAL
•I have a mood disorder and have to take anti depressants.
•Doctor has referred me for ADHD ASSESSMENT
•Probably not an exhaustive list of the unlikely hood of being able to shed 4-5 stone

AIBU to just bite the bullet and get a Gastric Sleeve?

YABU There are many other things you could try before something so drastic.

My friend had it, she lost 8 stone and then unfortunately put 7 stone back on. I feel for her as she went through two years of counselling and assessments before having the procedure,

adultsizedogbed · 21/12/2023 20:16

My sister had one and has lost 9 stone !

It's been life changing !

She paid and had it done in bupa in this country and the care was amazing !

Why didn't Ozempic work for you? I'm on it and it's working a treat.

Is the Ozempic shortage resolved now? I stopped taking it as I couldn't get my prescription refilled anywhere.

Christmassss · 21/12/2023 20:17

OP gave you tried cutting carbs? You’ll be starving for two weeks but it really does reduce the hunger.

fruitbrewhaha · 21/12/2023 20:20

Have you consulted a dietician? You don’t want to stop the hormone ghrelin. It stimulates autophagy. You need to work out why you overeat and address that.

Pebbles16 · 21/12/2023 20:21

Please stop taking Ozempic and Mounjaro for weightloss, they are medications for diabetes. Saxenda and Wegovy are the obesity medications. Yes, I know they are in short supply - as is Ozempic because people living with obesity are taking them off label.
Sorry to hijack the thread OP and wish you well with your choices. I just get maddened that people with immediate health needs (diabetes) are being denied their correct medication because of the pressure of people wanting them for weightloss.

Well it's Wegovy I'm taking but same thing. I've had no issue getting it.

ADHD meds will reduce your reliance on use of food to top up your low dopamine (if that's what's happening) and you will likely lose weight or at least be on a more level playing field when it comes to weight loss methods.

Being on an even playing field with weight loss methods is what I am after. I wouldn't mind if I was eating crap day in day out, but I'm not.

I wonder if low dopamine is the cause of this insane appetite and prevents all the nutritious food satisfying me properly.

Christmassss · 21/12/2023 20:25

OP what do you eat on a normal day?

Ykn · 21/12/2023 20:25

Low carb or the Mediterranean "diet" every time. Doesn't even feel like dieting.

I lost 6 stone by low carbing, even as a pescatarian, and completely lost my sweet tooth through cutting right down on sugar.

SwirlyShirly · 21/12/2023 20:26

I ended up nearly 26 stone. I had a mini bypass in February and it was the best decision I ever made for my health. 10.5 stone down, and now on zero medication other than my asthma tablets and multivits. My advice is do your research, don't rush in to anything, it's a tool not a cure.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/12/2023 20:30

I'm absolutely certain that surgery will help you if your main issue is always feeling hungry (rather than emotional or binge eating).

JaffaCake24 · 21/12/2023 20:31

Have you had a gut test? You may find some answers in your gut microbiome.

You could use Zoe Nutrition or Biomesight to help with the gut test. I suggest doing both.

Once you know what’s inside you you can start to work with changing what’s in there.

Id say right now they’re not a good shape. You are most likely deficient in bifidobacteria and lactobacillus. You more than likely have some pathogenic overgrowths judging by your autoimmune diseases.

This is a very technical report all about hunger and the microbiome. It’s going to take a while to really understand it but if you take the time to dive in and learn about this and then use some of it to apply to what you find inside yourself you may well solve or improve at least a lot more of your problems than just weight.

https://microbiomejournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40168-021-01093-y#:~:text=Disturbed%20appetite%20control%20may%20disrupt,metabolic%20requirements%20and%20hedonic%20feelings.

Your gut sounds dysbiotic currently and although a gastric band would be a quick fix there are longer term problems with nutrient absorption that may come back to haunt you at a later date.

To start with you could try supplementing with bifidobacteria-only supplement for 8 weeks and see if you feel any improvement. Seeking Health has a bifido only supplement.

It may also help the PCOS and thyroid. It may be you need much higher doses though. Too early to say without seeing what gut bacteria you have.

I recommend watching all the Zoe nutrition videos on YouTube or listen to their podcasts to understand how to heal your gut microbiome.

From what you’ve described it sounds like you may be insulin resistant also.

Zoe will put a blood sugar monitor on you, complete game changer. You see real time how good affects you.

This guy on TikTok is good to watch.

Food, not good.

Doggonames · 21/12/2023 20:38

Definitely do the adhd thing first.

i have been on methylphenidate for 1.5 weeks at 5mg twice a day. I used eat and eat and eat basically, mainly crisps and chocolate. Emotional and boredom eating. The difference already, I’m barely hungry, I dint feel the need to just eat. So strange.

teltic · 21/12/2023 20:39

bonzaitree · 21/12/2023 20:13

Have you got up to the full dose with Ozempic? It takes months to ramp up to a dose that may work.

I was on a high dose and they didn't want to give it to me any more because of lack of weight loss save for the first week. Tbh the heartburn put me off it was painful.

I think Aw who t you can have a higher dose though.

@Christmassss Omg this is what makes me want to try everything else first. Fo you know why she regained the weight?

OP posts:
RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2023 20:41

If you want and think a gastric sleeve will work for you then go for it. Whether the NHS should pay for them is another matter altogether.

teltic · 21/12/2023 20:42

@Isobel201 yep just like me. I have a feeling it is something to do with blood sugars or something.

@adultsizedogbed Has she had it for a good few years though? I heard that the first 2 years is the best but then you can regain and that is what makes me hesitate.

OP posts:
newmum0604 · 21/12/2023 20:44

I haven't been on ADHD medication myself but I do think this would be the answer to my sometimes seemingly insatiable appetite! I know you say it's physical hunger but for me the more I eat the more hungry I feel so it could be that. I think ADHD meds could really be the answer and worth exploring before any kind of surgery. Good luck!

Christmassss · 21/12/2023 20:46

@Christmassss Omg this is what makes me want to try everything else first. Fo you know why she regained the weight?

Basically she started eating more, I think biscuits are the culprit plus lattes that are about 250 calories a pop.

teltic · 21/12/2023 20:46

@Christmassss I like body builder type diets, with health fats. Mediterranean diet foods. Simple stuff.
But I will have an insane hunger that just won't go (even after I've eaten plenty), until I have loads of milk and cereal and carbs galore.
Bizarre

DM developed post bariatic hypoglycaemia 15 years after the op.

Also osteoporosis due to poor vit D absorption. She had injections in the end but it wasn’t enough.

If you go for it, do make sure to test your vitamin levels regularly.

Shizzlestix · 21/12/2023 20:59

teltic · 21/12/2023 20:06

@Worriedmum159 That is very encouraging to hear that you came to that conclusion following research.I am sure genetics play a massive part in these issues too!

@Shizzlestix Does it help with the actual hunger too?

Yes, because you'll have a restriction so you feel very full very quickly.

DianaTiana · 21/12/2023 21:00

If nothing else at least get yourself a CGM (eg Librelink available on Amazon) to see how different foods affect your blood sugars (as a PP suggested).

If you can visually see the peaks and troughs you get after eating eg cereal you will feel compelled to mitigate these. You will naturally alter your diet so that you're not getting big spikes. It's the spikes and subsequent drops that make you hungry. It will be eye opening OP.
