To not use Double cream on the Christmas Trifle?

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 13:52

Help me decide.... I am making individual trifles for Christmas day dessert. I am making them Christmas eve, normally I use Double cream and icing sugar mixture for the top, but this year I've been to costco and got a huge spray cream to use over Christmas. Would it be so bad to use spray cream on top just before serving?

A lot of people really don't like the taste but if you know that the people eating it do, then use it. The only thing I find with spray cream is that it does start to liquidate quickly so leave it until just before serving to top the trifle.

Prawncow · 21/12/2023 13:57

It tastes totally different. I’d save the spray for hot chocolates.

FoFanta · 21/12/2023 13:58

I love spray cream, but not for the topping of a trifle! Absolutely not!

MadamVastra · 21/12/2023 13:58

No sorry. Red card!

Tiswa · 21/12/2023 14:01

it Will be a very different dessert to what you normally do so it’s up to you

persinally no spray cream is for other things

CasperGutman · 21/12/2023 14:03

No. Not on the Christmas trifle. Have it with a casual crumble in January, or as an unnecessary embellishment to hot chocolate.

FranticallyFrank · 21/12/2023 14:04

It won’t taste as good so why would you? Don’t mess with the trifle.

SpringIntoChaos · 21/12/2023 14:04

No OP...don't spoil Christmas with plastic 'cream' 😨

IKissedKermit · 21/12/2023 14:06

No from me, too. You can buy ready whipped cream in a carton in the supermarket if you just want to avoid whipping it on the day.

Itsallgoingtopot · 21/12/2023 14:06

Another no, not for the trifle.

Save it for hot chocolates. Or to have on toast and jam. A Christmas decadence!

Itsallgoingtopot · 21/12/2023 14:08

Or for playing pie face!

ManateeFair · 21/12/2023 14:12

If you genuinely prefer spray cream to proper cream, then use it. But spray cream doesn't have the same taste or texture of double cream. It's mostly air and it pretty much disappears when you start to eat it. It's also long-life, which affects the flavour a lot (as with long-life milk etc). Whereas proper whipped cream is thicker, tastes fresh and is a lot more indulgent. So people are certainly going to notice that you're not using real cream.

I personally would put spray cream on hot chocolate or as a garnish on an ice cream sundae, but not really anything else.

I love the term 'a casual crumble' 😄

LenaLamont · 21/12/2023 14:14

You'll ruin the trifle! Save the squirty cream for hot chocolate.

GreenLight23 · 21/12/2023 14:14

No only as an optional extra.

ginasevern · 21/12/2023 14:15

Costco spray cream is actually the posh variety (Isigny sur Mere) or something like that. I usually hate spray cream but this brand is real cream, not UHT, and is flavoured with a hint of vanilla. On the basis of that go for it. But as others have said, you will need to spray it on just before serving otherwise it will become a liquid gloop.

momonpurpose · 21/12/2023 14:16

It melts very quickly. If the presentation matters to you I wouldn't.

Topjoe19 · 21/12/2023 14:16

@StoneColdAlibi nothing better than a casual crumble in January!!

FastingBitchFace · 21/12/2023 14:22

Think of the Baby Jesus! Real cream only please.

caringcarer · 21/12/2023 14:23

Absolutely not. 😱

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 14:23

I definitely don't want to ruin the Trifle... I now need to make a casual crumble though 😂😂

I'm definitely adopting the term 'casual crumble' henceforth 😍🤣👍

StoneColdAlibi · 21/12/2023 14:26

Specifically a casual January crumble

SnowRoomAtTheInn · 21/12/2023 14:26

A casual crumble calls for a scoop of ice cream or splash of ready made custard, surely?

Squirty cream is only for hot chocolate.

Come on, OP. You knew you were BU with the trifle suggestion Grin.
