To not use Double cream on the Christmas Trifle?

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 13:52

Help me decide.... I am making individual trifles for Christmas day dessert. I am making them Christmas eve, normally I use Double cream and icing sugar mixture for the top, but this year I've been to costco and got a huge spray cream to use over Christmas. Would it be so bad to use spray cream on top just before serving?

Think of the Baby Jesus! Real cream only please.

This has made proper giggle, thank you @FastingBitchFace

Zanatdy · 21/12/2023 16:33

No, it’s got to be double cream

KimberleyClark · 21/12/2023 16:35

If you want to make whipped cream go further you can fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Gives a fluffy texture and makes no difference to the taste.

TerfTalking · 21/12/2023 16:38

One cannot replace double cream on a trifle and certainly not with squirts cream. Whipping at a push.

i cannot wait for all the reduced extra large double creams after Christmas so I can make and freeze butter.

I thought you weren't meant to eat raw eggs due to Salmonella risk.

bridgetreilly · 21/12/2023 17:35

Vile. But you don’t need to add sugar to the real cream.

If they're Lion stamped it's fine.

Best avoided by the very young, elderly and pregnant though.

DwightDFlysenhower · 21/12/2023 17:39

Trifle is about the only thing I sweeten whipped cream for (I'd use whipping cream personally).

I have also made Chantilly cream with vanilla and sugar.

A lot of the time I think it's a bit sweet though, and would prefer it just whipped.

Lilithlogic · 21/12/2023 17:41

I still use Birds dream topping on my trifle. I prefer real cream but the rest of my mob is not fussed. Can't stand the squirty stuff

Speaking of cream etc., does anyone else find the arrary of accompaniments to pud or mince pies exhausting?

M and S have cream - thick, luxury thick, double, single, clotted, speculous, luxury and non luxury brandy - butters - luxury and non luxury brandy. Plus Lancastrian hubbie has requested Cumberland rum butter, Amazon etc. Oddly, no salted caramel cream this year in M and S and I don’t think I’ve seen brandy sauce.

We tried the speculous cream, it was dull. The DH can’t handke the idea of thick cream but likes brandy and rum butter an odd spot of single cream. I think single cream is yucky on pud and prefer custard. The DS and I can’t understand how brandy cream is not just grown up/sophisticated brandy butter. Anyway the fridge gets a bit full of these things 😂

Rum butter on crackers (or oatcakes now I'm living darn sarf) is a sugar-tastic Twixtmas game changer. Definitely worth making your own to ensure a good rum:sugar:butter ratio, compared with shop bought.

I mean - it might be new information, but ‘mind blowing’….. ?

Well I don't have a sweet tooth. So the idea of adding sugar to an adequately sweet pudding shocked me!

And carrots are sweet enough already!

trulyunruly01 · 21/12/2023 18:51

Well I have been looking for ways at making the whipped (double) cream stay perky for longer, and I have made myself feel quite Envy at some of the suggestions.
Gelatin
Potato starch
Cornflour

A little icing sugar seems quite tame

ColettesEarrings · 21/12/2023 18:53

Spray cream is fucking revolting and says "I have no palate and couldn't give a stuff about my guests" better than most other things. If that's the vibe you're going for then I wish you well!

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/12/2023 18:57

No! Protect your trifles from this abomination.

ChristmasAgainWTAF · 21/12/2023 19:00

'I think single cream is yucky on pud and prefer custard.'

I prefer extra thick double cream, it isn't runny and it doesn't sink in to the desert making it soggy. Never been a custard lover.

I like spray cream but only on hot chocolates or icecream sundaes.

@mrswhiplington · Today 14:43

'I can just imagine another post on here on Boxing Day, "AIBU - my host used squirty cream on my trifle".😃'

😂I can too!

StopStartStop · 21/12/2023 19:06

I'm using extra thick double cream, not whisking anything. It's a risk but I think people will cope.

thecatwiththesilveryfur · 21/12/2023 19:17

Yabu @LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer (because now I need a trifle may I have your recipe please and thank you)

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 19:37

Ok Its not super fancy but always goes down well!

Jelly
Tinned strawberrys (fresh aren't best for this I've tried and the tinned are better)
Swiss roll
Custard
Double cream
Icing sugar
Sprinkles/flake/fresh strawberries

Trifle dish (mines a glass fruit bowl) or do it in individual dishes or wine glasses

In the bottom of the dish place a slice of Swiss roll, put a few of the tinned strawberries on top and cover with jelly. Leave to set and then pop the custard on top. Add some icing sugar to the cream and whisk until very stiff peaks, spoon over the custard.

Decorate with either fresh strawberries, sprinkles/va crushed up flake/ berries

One year I added fresh berries and just before serving crushed meringue nests and sprinkled on the cream it was like a mix between an Eton mess and a trifle!!

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 19:39

Obviously in a bigger bowl put more than 1 slice in the bowl, when I do it in a bowl I put the Swiss roll all around the side and the tinned strawbs in the middle then cover with jelly.

Sugar in the cream?? 😱 Squirty cream 😱😱😱😱😱 no to both!! Also where's the sherry in your recipe????? 😁

Vitriolinsanity · 21/12/2023 19:48

I absolutely loathe spray cream. It's just white air.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 21/12/2023 19:57

I've never put sherry in my trifles ever!! I do Brandy in the mince pies though!!
