To think primary schools are breaking up too late this year

I know some schools finished last week but my 2 don’t break up til Friday.

They’re exhausted, they’re acting up, the Christmas excitement has taken over and turned them into a right bag of dicks this week.

I don’t remember ever breaking up this late when I was a kid.

And they’re off til 8th January. God help me!

Should I just be glad they’re out of the house?

Careful what you wish for, my DC broke up on the 13th at 11:30am and doesn’t go back until 9th January. Basically a month off 🙄

Most parents are working these days, and there's been an increase in absenteeism since the pandemic. I think having more days in school is better for kids and parents, though hard on the teachers!

ManateeFair · 20/12/2023 10:51

I don't have kids, but I know that when I was a kid myself, breaking up late and then having more time to chill after Christmas always felt preferable to breaking with ages to go and then having to go back to school immediately after new year. Going back to school on 4 Jan or something when the tree was still up felt unbearably depressing.

Icelandic9 · 20/12/2023 10:52

I'm quite happy with it as I'm off work this week, so I can get more done ready for xmas while dd is still in school

CeeJay81 · 20/12/2023 10:53

I agree. Ours break up tomorrow, back 8th. They are definitely ready for break now, especially my 14 year old. Had a load of Mock exams a couple of weeks back that have taken its toll. My youngest at primary will probably just jave a couple of days of activities and games to wind down with but both desperate to finish for the term.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/12/2023 10:53

My son's term finishes at 3:20pm on Friday 22nd, and that is too late for my liking. Mainly because are flying to family and the airport on a Saturday two days before Christmas is going to be atrocious.

shearwater2 · 20/12/2023 10:55

Ours finished last Friday but go back on 2nd Jan.

CutiePatooties · 20/12/2023 10:56

Only came to say this post is hilarious 😂 thank you! I especially loved ‘bag of dicks’ 🤣

My DD finishes today, so not as bad. She goes back on the 8th though, so I have her off longer with me. Haven’t noticed her being a dick, although we’re probably all a bag of dicks in this family throughout the year so I doubt I would notice a difference.

It’s not extra time in school though. They’re still off for the same amount of time, it’s just the dates I’m not convinced by.

This academic year they go back on the 5th, so not much time before or after. State school end of term hols got shorter when they started getting a week for feb 1/2 term which used to be half week when I was at school. When my DS was in Yr6, they started back in August. Horrible

don’t have children
are not a teacher

Haha! When I frog marched my 7 year old back home this morning to get changed after managing to let her get to school wearing tights as trousers for PE instead of the leggings I’d loving set out for her, bag of dicks felt apt.

Roll on Friday eh?

Ours is always late I feel not just this year it was very late last year. Ours is Thursday and yes mine are exhausted and don’t want to go, this morning was a battle

13-9 sounds perfect. Yes, it does mean parents have to make arrangements, but having a proper break is better for them

Starburst8 · 20/12/2023 11:07

I agree the break up for Christmas this year is late.
Ours were supposed to go back on 8th January but the school have just updated their calendar and decided 8th is a training day so they're not back until 9th 😠

Hangingintherejust · 20/12/2023 11:08

DCs broke up Friday and are back in school on 2nd Jan and so the first week back will be awful. I'm not sure breaking up early is any better than breaking up late as there will still be a brief period of pain! It's just the way it falls.

MrsMiddleMother · 20/12/2023 11:08

Our kids break up today and go back 8th which for us is perfect. They're so tired and grumpy and I'm looking forward to the time together after Christmas rather than the stressful build up, easier to keep them entertained with all their new toys.

Shergill15 · 20/12/2023 11:09

DD8 finishes at lunchtime today and goes back on the 4th, which feels about right. She broke up on the 16th last year which made finding childcare a nightmare as no wraparound/holiday clubs were open. She's definitely ready for the break though - can tell she's tired and she's veering between ratty and giddy several times a day!

Peppermintginger · 20/12/2023 11:15

notforonesecond · 20/12/2023 10:12

See I thought I would like it, but they did all the fun stuff last week and are just in school this week vibrating about. The behaviour is off the charts insane. Not even naughty really, just weird! They must be so tired.

I’m sure you’re right though, the extra week after New Year will be nice. Must try to be positive!

Completely resonate with this! Breaking up tomorrow and my Y1 child is a mess!!! Ours go back on the 4th Jan, so it's only next week they have a Full week off.

Toomanysquishmallows · 20/12/2023 11:16

My child’s special school finishes on Friday. I honestly wish they were breaking up earlier , as there will be a long holiday to fill after Christmas.

Oganesson118 · 20/12/2023 11:17

It just happens this way every few years depending how the dates fall. I suppose they could have broken up today and gone back on the 3rd. My daughter's school get 3 weeks anyway so they finished last week which I bet the teachers were glad about.

Same! You’re in Leicestershire as well I assume!

As much as I would be livid by this, I just can’t stop laughing! 🤣 on one hand I’m so sorry on the other hand HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA thank you so much for cheering me up this morning! 🤣

Just keep thinking of all the festive cheer and the spirit of Christmas 🎅 🌲 🎁
