To return a opened (and tasted) bottle of M&S fake baileys?

Cos it absolutely tastes of dirt?
I'm not a big boozer at all, but my Dec treat is a quaff of nice tipple most evenings.
I'm a lone parent of a toddler so don't go out at night anymore :-(
It's usually dessert wine or a baileys.

Was in M&S and grabbed their version (it's a small food hall and they don't seem to sell baileys) and my goodness it's horrible!
As it's the same price as Baileys and M&S is pretty reliable quality wise I thought it would be better than the original, otherwise why bother?
Actually undrinkable.
The booze seems to taste more like vodka than whiskey and there's a horrible aftertaste.

I want to return it for a refund it's so bad, but will I look like a dodgy fucker if I do?

Contact them on social media and they will probably offer to refund you

HamstersAreMyLife · 17/12/2023 22:34

Is it their plain one? It shouldn't taste that weird, the flavoured ones are hit and miss. If you shook it properly and it tastes off as you describe I would take it back as it could have gone off.

2dogsandabudgie · 17/12/2023 22:37

Not sure that you can return something just because you don't like the taste. If a product had actually gone off before the use by date you can, but not sure you would get a refund on alcohol. Someone else might love the taste. Does it say anything on the actual product itself?

Yes the plain one

You want to return something you've never tried before because you've decided you don't like it. You also want a refund
Top CF-ery

littleannennt · 17/12/2023 22:43

@2dogsandabudgie funnily enough when I was a student I worked in Sainsburys - people used to bring in empty packaging of expensive meat (always seemed to be rather than anything else) and say the meat wasn't very good/tough etc.
They got a full refund (think we had to get them to fill in a form) this was early 2000's - maybe there was a money back/satisfaction marketing campaign?

There's got to be a problem with it if it's foul-tasting, so of course you can take it back for a refund. Presumably it smells bad too if it tastes of dirt, so they'll know you're not a chancer.

littleannennt · 17/12/2023 22:46

Happy to hear from others who love it, cos I just can't see how that's possible.
I'm not remotely fussy in my tastes, i love most food & drink!
I eat and drink most things and even if I don't enjoy it I can tolerate it.
This crap is so nasty I won't be able to even have it as an Irish coffe E

Yes I remember this. There were some proper CFs, bringing back packaging saying it tasted disgusting yet they had eaten/drank the lot!! Usually the same people as well, trying to get something for nothing 🤣

NoTouch · 17/12/2023 22:49

I thought it would be better than the original

I havent had one yet that is better than original Baileys so stick with what I know now, my mum bought a few of the pretenders and imo none were close. She never got the M&S one so at least I know to avoid it too!

I dont think I would return unless I believed it was off.

Chloe84 · 17/12/2023 22:51

I’m teetotal but I keep seeing Bailey’s is £10 in Tesco, down from £22.

Elfoutthewindow · 17/12/2023 22:52

Yabu to think Baileys would be involved in Irish coffee.

Aprilx · 17/12/2023 22:52

You can’t return food or drink because you don’t like it! Of course it is M&S and they might swap it / refund it anyway, but you are not being reasonable.

Of course she should return it if it’s disgusting.

When did people start having such low expectations from food companies?

PianPianPiano · 17/12/2023 23:01

Their returns policy suggests they would accept and give you gift vouchers. Most companies have some sort of "we hope you love this, but if you don't we'll refund you" sort of guarantee.

M&S used to refund if you laddered a pair of their tights...

I used to work in customer services for a major supermarket. We used to get a lot of complaints about our own label Islay malt whisky. Customers said it tasted of TCP.

Well,it would. It's the iodine in the peat used in making it. It may be disgusting to the customer but it's not a fault and not a refundable matter.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/12/2023 23:10

I'd return it saying it "tasted off" and "perhaps it is spoiled or a bad batch?" and exchange for the real thing. ☺️

Yoloohno · 17/12/2023 23:12

Personal taste is not the same as something being undrinkable.

if it had gone off it would’ve taken a lot as last night I opened a bottle of baileys that was bought in 2021 and was past expiry. It was still perfectly drinkable with no ill effects.

CharityShopHalfPriceSale · 17/12/2023 23:13

Make a "Fake Baileys" coffee

Just because she finds it "disgusting"doesn't actually mean there is anything wrong with it. I often buy food I don't particularly enjoy - wouldn't dream of asking for a refund.

3smallpups · 17/12/2023 23:26

I bought one last week as it won a taste testing of non baileys baileys . It seems perfectly fine, I'd struggle to say it wasn't baileys really.
Maybe there is something wrong with your bottle ?

Alarum · 17/12/2023 23:27

So you want a full refund for a food item that isn’t faulty, but that you just didn’t like?

I mean, yeah, they’ll probably refund you because that’s the way they are, but that still doesn’t mean you’re not a CF.

Birdcar · 17/12/2023 23:31

It sounds like there's something wrong with it. On that basis I'd say, yes bring it back.

LinneM · 17/12/2023 23:34

I’m sure you’re able to return an item back to the retailer if you’re not satisfied with the product. I’d take it back but check their T&Cs online first
