To return a opened (and tasted) bottle of M&S fake baileys?

littleannennt · 17/12/2023 22:30

Cos it absolutely tastes of dirt?
I'm not a big boozer at all, but my Dec treat is a quaff of nice tipple most evenings.
I'm a lone parent of a toddler so don't go out at night anymore :-(
It's usually dessert wine or a baileys.

Was in M&S and grabbed their version (it's a small food hall and they don't seem to sell baileys) and my goodness it's horrible!
As it's the same price as Baileys and M&S is pretty reliable quality wise I thought it would be better than the original, otherwise why bother?
Actually undrinkable.
The booze seems to taste more like vodka than whiskey and there's a horrible aftertaste.

I want to return it for a refund it's so bad, but will I look like a dodgy fucker if I do?

Just because she finds it "disgusting"doesn't actually mean there is anything wrong with it. I often buy food I don't particularly enjoy - wouldn't dream of asking for a refund.

The old saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder is so true, or in this case taste is in the tongue of the beholder.

I actually really dislike Baileys and i normally love cream liqueurs there are so many nicer ones out there!

NutellaNut · 18/12/2023 08:55

You are a CF if you return opened food / drink just because you don’t like it. I’d hope they tell you to piss off. Do you think brands owe you a free trial of a full size product? It’s not like returning a jumper you don’t like, unless there is something actually wrong with it. Just pass it on to a friend who might enjoy it. (I’m not suggesting gifting an opened bottle and passing it off as new by the way! )

littleannennt · 18/12/2023 09:13

@bruffin which ones do you recommend?
I'm definitely going to try Coole Swan someone mentioned upthread if I can find it locally.

I really like Sheridans which is coffee and cream liqueur, and Lyme Bay Butterscotch which you tend to find in NT, English Heritage shops etc

NuffSaidSam · 18/12/2023 10:00

If you've only had a sip and you're not happy with the quality of it, of course it's ok to return it. It'd be different if you'd drink half the bottle. I'd leave out the single parent back story though, it's not X Factor!

Can't believe the number of people who think they have to just accept something being awful incase it makes them a 'CF'.

On quite a lot of packaging it actually says if you're not happy with the quality of a product to contact them etc.

BrownTableMat · 18/12/2023 10:07

Of course you can return it if you’re not happy with it - sounds like there might be something wrong with that bottle. I recently returned a £10 bottle of wine to Tesco because it was horrible. I think there was something off about it. Tesco refunded me.

HamstersAreMyLife · 18/12/2023 14:25

Oh I've had that and it's fine, thinner than baileys but richer than the aldi one. Shouldn't taste that bad, if it tastes like dirt it must be off. They have cream in them so it's not like other alcohol, I would take it back. If its just synthetically tasting maybe it's just not to your taste, is there anyone else who can taste test for you?!

tescocreditcard · 18/12/2023 14:28

YANBU take it back.

My new years resolution is to keep receipts for everything and if there is the slightest thing wrong with anything. or if any item doesn't last a year then it's going back. I'm sick of it.

Santashelperisonstrike · 18/12/2023 14:29

Not CF-ery at all!!

If you like Bailey’s then the M&S alternative shouldn’t be that different. It sounds off to me!

I’d take it back. If it was Poundland I’d say of course it’s not going to be nice, but M&S market themselves on the quality of their food. If a Bailey’s drinker thinks it disgusting the. It’s clearly below their standards.

Jellycats4life · 18/12/2023 17:10

God, why are people so vicious on this thread?

Theres a different between “I don’t really like this liqueur” (subjective) and “this is undrinkable” (objective).

Sounds like the latter, so the OP is perfectly entitled to take it back. Especially if M&S offer a money back guarantee for those not completely satisfied with their purchase 🤷‍♀️

jemenfous37 · 17/12/2023 22:42

You want to return something you've never tried before because you've decided you don't like it. You also want a refund
Top CF-ery

M&S are advertising it as Irish Cream. Should be at least as good as other brands of Irish Cream

Jifmicroliquid · 18/12/2023 21:28

I’ve never found any of the baileys substitutes quite match up so I know longer bother with other brands unless I’m buying cheap stuff to use in coffees (of which the home and bargain one actually wins for taste in coffee).

As for your initial query, I don’t think you can return it just because you don’t like it (or can you??)

SurferRona · 18/12/2023 21:28

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, no not really, but I did take a half wheel of Stilton back to Tesco for a refund cos it was horrible. No. Blue. Flavour. Whatsoever. Looked great, tasted foul. Went back to Waitrose then. Lovely cheese from there. Return it, say it is horrible- if it’s badged as Irish cream liquer it should resemble Baileys!

justasking111 · 18/12/2023 21:34

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/12/2023 23:10

I'd return it saying it "tasted off" and "perhaps it is spoiled or a bad batch?" and exchange for the real thing. ☺️

I've taken back wine that was off with absolutely no problem.

MrsFrewTBun · 18/12/2023 21:38

You are not at all unreasonable OP. It tastes like custard caught on the bottom of the pan. Didn’t have the guts to get a refund for mine but you go girl.

melj1213 · 18/12/2023 21:54

YANBU

I work for a major supermarket and used to be on the customer service desk and we would often get people bringing stuff back due to issues with quality and we'd always happily replace/refund without question in this situation.

If you brought back a bottle where there's clearly only a small amount that has been poured out and said you wanted to bring it back because it didn't taste right then we would have no issue returning it as you're more than likely being truthful. If, however, you came back with an empty bottle and complained that it hadn't tasted right then we wouldn't refund because you can't drink a whole bottle and then just claim it was "not right" ... That is something you notice within the first few mouthfuls, not once you get to the bottom of the bottle!

FlickyCrumble · 18/12/2023 22:08

Take it back to the shop. Ask to speak to the food hall manager and Explain that you think the drink taste odd. Explain you think it might be off and ask for a refund. The worst that can happen is the manager says no. If someone else has already complained then you will get a refund.

longtompot · 18/12/2023 22:54

@littleannennt I have returned a bottle of wine before, with a glass taken out, as it was disgusting. It was from Sainsbury's and they were really good about refunding me.
