To think party food is tacky and tasteless?

Every Christmas the supermarkets really push all that sort of beige finger food (bung in the oven stuff) as if it's delicious and what everyone wants? M&S and Waitrose offerings this year look vile, eg. mini prawn toasts, feta popcorn, chicken doughnuts? Does anyone really love this food?

I think this type of food is really outdated, bit tacky, doesn't look very appealing and mostly pretty tasteless? Some of it is quite expensive too. I'd rather just do a cheese board and some nice breads, meats, chutneys, pickles etc. Aibu? What do you have for your Christmas buffet/party food?

Love a buffet and always think I like the beige food, but the reality is so disappointing. Cold meats, cheese board, decent sausage rolls all good. Prawn toasts and spring rolls I can cope with in a Chinese takeaway but not sitting out in a warm room all evening being picked up and discarded multiple times Xmas Envy.

I do think they promise so much and deliver so little. Always bland, stodgy, disappointing.

Ooh I haven’t had an onion ring in years! Might have to indulge next time I’m in Sainsbury’s

Have we ascertained what a 'delicate English salad' is yet?

VanityDiesHard · 19/12/2023 10:22

I agree with you, OP. I find most of it pretty blegh and too much of it would give me an upset stomach.

SkinnyChaiLattePlease · 19/12/2023 10:24

I hate cheese (unless it's melted) and turkey sandwiches.

Give me a plate of mini pizza's that take the skin off roof of my mouth any day!

Its a salad that cries if someone working class tries to eat it.

Presumably a salad consisting of seasonal English produce.

But wouldn't that be basically grated root vegetables and winter cabbage - so something like a coleslaw?

Party food is about the only upside there is to the entire Christmas season

Womencanlift · 19/12/2023 13:20

It shows that unsurprisingly people like different things. On these MN posts where people look down on others for choosing a very normal thing to eat I know who the unreasonable ones are

Personally if I went to a party and all that was offered was a cheeseboard and some cold meats with breadsticks as an accompaniment I would think that the host forgot they were having guests until the last minute. I would definitely be going home via McDonalds

I assume they can make more profit on cheap rubbish upf than on real food. It also tends to be shelf stable.

Simonjt · 19/12/2023 18:20

I love party food. We had party food for tea on Friday veggie garlic mini kievs, tempura veg, veg steamed bao buns, veg pakora, little mini bean burgers and sweetcorn fritters.

Salad grows in polytunnels. Chicory, miner's lettuce, pea shoots?

MeinKraft · 19/12/2023 18:24

GrinGrin at both Christmas salad and delicate English salad. I love a bit of party food when I'm squiffy! DH and I drink a bottle or two of Prosecco and bung a load of spicy chicken samosas or melty bacon and cheese things in the air fryer for drunk snacks.

ThreeRingCircus · 19/12/2023 18:26

Some beige party food items are nice but I agree that most are disappointing.

However, they're a main part of my Boxing Day buffet as they're easy, the children like them and it bulks everything out a bit. I do a cheeseboard, deli meats, pate and baguettes and then a pasta salad and green salad too. I think party food has its place.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/12/2023 18:27

I'm not fond of beige party food but if I was having a party type buffet I would buy it for people who enjoy it. I think a mix of different food is the best way to go. I am all about the bread, cheese and pate.
