AIBU to not understand the appeal of a cheeseboard?

I like some cheeses, cheddar, feta, mozzarella, halloumi and emmental for example but usually melted or as part of a dish. I don’t really understand the appeal of eating big pieces of cheese and I can’t stand brie or blue cheese.

Yet people positively go into raptures over cheese. It seems to be a positive obsession with some. A friend is incredulous at my relative indifference over cheese and wanted to give me an expensive cheeseboard so I could share her obsession but though incredibly kind of her it’d be wasted on me.

I’m a big believer in each to their own but I wonder what it is about cheese in particular that makes so many people positively evangelical about it?

I don’t understand why it’s any different from liking chocolate, or coffee, or wine? In general, if you really like something, and it’s something that there are millions of varieties of and different ways of producing, then it’s understandable to get really into it.

Have to say we tried some Cornish Yarg recently to see if we wanted it for our Xmas cheeseboard. Not greatly impressed. Waitrose Comté at half the price, very nice. Especially if you let it breathe out of the fridge for a while.

We’re having a cold buffet on Christmas Day and the cheeseboard will be the highlight - huge variety of different cheeses with accompaniments. Can’t wait!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/12/2023 13:07

YABVU. 🧀

Though it took me a while to acquire a taste for blue cheese. Love it now though.

ObliviousCoalmine · 16/12/2023 13:08

Well, the appeal of cheeseboards is...

The cheese. Although I also enjoy all the nibbly accompaniments.

Well, you clearly know you are being massively unreasonable, hence not enabling voting. Also…..

I live in Switzerland, moved here from London 8 years ago. Basically cheese is a kind of religion here. Whatever levels of cheese worship you’ve seen before, they are insignificant compared to how the Swiss worship cheese.

Gnomegnomegnome · 16/12/2023 13:09

Cheese is my chocolate.

I don’t like roast (and I’m veggie so no turkey or pigs in blankets) so a cheeseboard is my favourite Christmas food. Although I obviously eat it all year just as people eat roasts all year but I make more of an effort at Christmas like others do with roasts!.

ConstantRain · 16/12/2023 13:10

I love cheese. I'd much rather eat cheese than dessert. It does have to be good cheese to be enjoyable. No block of mild rubbery cheese.

Bonjovispjs · 16/12/2023 13:10

Cheese makes the world a better place 😋

Shopper727 · 16/12/2023 13:13

AIBU to not understand the appeal of a cheeseboard

Yes. Very.

Cheese has that umami taste that not many foods conrain. It is salty and savoury and delicious.

I acccept that you don't like cheese, so don't worry about it.

I loathe parsnips and can't understand why anyone would want to eat them, but I always remember to buy some for Christmas dinner so that DH and DD can enjoy them.

Alwaystired23 · 16/12/2023 13:17

This is a bit like the recent slippers thread.

TheDogIsInCharge · 16/12/2023 13:19

When I first met my husband he was a total cheese philistine. Early on I was buying cheese in a huge French supermarket with the most glorious cheese selection and counter and what did he pick? A fucking pack of sliced edam. I almost left the bastard right there.

My parents live in France and a cheeseboard is essential after every lunch, no matter how full you might be. Even the primary school in the village has a cheese course (they post their daily menu at the gate so all the parents can discuss it with much gesturing and discourse).

God I love cheese. Aldi currently has a brie with truffle which is heaven on a nice cracker.

Perfectlystill · 16/12/2023 13:19

Ok if you're in your 30s that may explain it.

If you want to get the appeal then go to a deli and buy one or two expensive pieces of different cheese - ask them for recommendations.

Ideally, go to a cheese and wine pairing class. God that is my dream night.

Purrrrrdy · 16/12/2023 13:20

Cheese is the best.

AlbatrosStrike · 16/12/2023 13:20

I’m with you. I absolutely looove cheese but never had a cheeseboard because I didn’t see the appeal 🤷‍♀️

I love cheese on toast or as part of a dish and would put cheese on anything, but I’ve never been tempted by a cheeseboard and I especially don’t understand cheese as / instead of a dessert

Aroundthewaygirl · 16/12/2023 13:20

I feel the same and I work for a cheese company 😂

I love cheese but mainly when it’s melted and I don’t care for eating it by itself with wine (which I hate) but seems to be a big thing.

BoogityBoogityFastestThingOnTwoFeet · 16/12/2023 13:20

I’m with you OP.

When younger I used to waitress and the smell of some of the cheeses when I went to put the cheeseboard down near made me retch!

I like cheese, I eat it pretty much every day, I just don’t want to eat cheese that smells like vomit or sweaty socks!

NotObligedToArgueWithStrangers · 16/12/2023 13:21

A life without cheese is not worth living IMHO 🧀 ❤️ Except for Stilton. Stilton can fuck right off.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 16/12/2023 13:21

If l could only eat one food for the rest of my life it would be cheese.

Not blue though - who wants to eat cheese that tastes of smelly feet?!

RedToothBrush · 16/12/2023 13:23

YABU and obviously don't eat enough cheese.

Your comment about not liking brie or blue cheese sums it up.

Your cheese knowledge and experience is clearly lacking and in need of urgent expansion.

The way to do this and to educate yourself on cheese is to eat more cheese.

You need MORE cheese not less.

Honeychickpea · 16/12/2023 13:23

ClaraThePigeon · 16/12/2023 12:46

Well of course you won't understand it if you don't like cheese, OP.
Just eat what you like and let others eat what they like. And don't overthink it any more.

MN would be near dead if no one questioned anything that they didn’t like or agree with. It’s a light discussion. I’m curious to know if others feel the same and also what it is about cheese in particular that inspires such devotion. I promise that I’m not wrestling Camembert from cheese lovers’ hands.

We like the taste. Is that so hard to comprehend?

CookieSue222 · 16/12/2023 13:24

It's not just about the cheese 🧀 though, is it (although the cheese drawer in my fridge is already groaning festively). It's all the fabulous accompaniments too - the breads, crackers, chutneys, olives and pickles. I adore pickled walnuts (again not to everyone's taste), but to me they are 'the taste of Christmas'.
