What do you do and what do you eat/cook?

Especially after ideas for what to cook/eat?

We don’t have set things we eat but last year we did cheese and wine. This year we want to get a Camembert - husband mentioned one of the supermarkets are doing an extra fancy one. We never have a big meal more just snack stuff because we’ll go all out Christmas Day.

caringcarer · 15/12/2023 18:31

I always boil a large jam Xmas Eve then roast it off in the oven for 30 minutes with a honey glaze. I parboil carrots then roast then off with honey glaze too. All served with mashed potatoes and peas.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 15/12/2023 18:38

We have Mexican, chilli, chicken fajitas and refried beans with tortillas, rice, cheese, sour cream and guacamole

jemenfous37 · 15/12/2023 18:39

@TheTurn0fTheScrew You cannot be a commited atheist and go to church, even on Christmas eve.
Taking the piss out of both church-goers and atheists

@DappledThings Do you make the ham yourself? Lots of people have mentioned having a ham

We have a big gammon joint, baked in the oven, rind stripped off about 20 mins before the end of cooking time, fat scored into diamond shapes, covered with a glaze of orange marmalade, brown sugar, English mustard, and a very little Allspice (not mixed spice).
Back in the oven for another 15/ 20 minutes.
The smell is gloriously Christmassy!

My Grammar School provided the Ripieno Chorus for St Matthew's Passion at the Royal Festival Hall every Good Friday.
Very few Christians were there, mostly Atheists & a few Jews because we enjoyed the singing.

AhBiscuits · 15/12/2023 18:44

I often make something like lasagna and garlic bread.

LisaD1 · 15/12/2023 18:45

Fish and chips here Christmas Eve. My eldest and her girlfriend come for dinner and we always have something from the chippy and play games.

MrInbetween · 15/12/2023 18:50

@jemenfous37 have you asked the vicars/priests this? Because I have and everyone of them have replied they are happy for none believers to come…I guess their view is you never know if people might be ‘turned’.

Also don’t you think that across the world in all faiths there are people attending their places of worship not beleiving?

Numbersarefun · 15/12/2023 18:50

Usually fish pie - I think the fish is traditional like on a Friday.

Twelveisthebestnumber · 15/12/2023 18:51

Normally a home cooked ham with a big pot of the cheesiest Mac and Cheese going. But stopped eating pork this year so a bit stumped myself!

MrInbetween · 15/12/2023 18:52

But to answer the question….

We always have a vegetarian meal on Christmas Eve because I’m a veggie and as Christmas Day is so meat heavy like a veggie meal to take centre stage. So something like a veggie chilly or risotto or Greek/Turkish themed stuff.

Shamrockk · 15/12/2023 18:53

@Alliwantforchristmasisbooooze I boil mine for 1.5-2 hours. Take it out and diamond score it. Mix golden syrup (honey if u prefer), whole grain mustard, garlic purée, ginger powder, pinch of chilli flakes and lots of pepper and spread all over for 20 minutes.

Take out and using the bowl you made the previous marinade in add 2 heaped teaspoons of light brown sugar and spread on top. Finish for 10 minutes.

Tip the drippings into a pan and cook the moisture out for a sauce reduction😊

Christmas Eve.

Party food and prosecco. Lots of different nibbles on a big tray in front of a Christmas film, love it, my favourite part of Christmas.

EtiennePalmiere · 15/12/2023 18:55

Atheists are allowed in church lol

fetchacloth · 15/12/2023 18:55

geckofrog · 15/12/2023 18:08

Curry!

Same here 😁

Alliwantforchristmasisbooooze · 15/12/2023 18:58

@Shamrockk God, that looks delicious..! I’ve never made a ham before, do you mean literally boil it in a pan on the stove 😬Also, what do you ask the butcher for and what sort of price is it?

We eat pork pie and pickled onions, cheese, salad bits etc. Watch Carols from King’s. This year we are also exchanging gifts with DM on Christmas Eve.

jemenfous37 · 15/12/2023 19:01

@MrInbetween Of course the vicar/priest/leader may be delighted at the thought of a potential 'conversion'. But for atheists only to turn up to church at Christmas is just taking the piss and keeping up appearances; agnostics at least are hedging their bets

Shamrockk · 15/12/2023 19:02

@Alliwantforchristmasisbooooze Just a pot that can hold the liquid and boil, I just use the biggest in my pot set and then keep topping with water when needed😊

That cut there is just the basic gammon joint out of Lidl I’m pretty sure it’s £4/5 where I am. Not the fancy Xmas ones or anything just the standard joint available all year round xx

SomethingInTheWaySheCooks · 15/12/2023 19:02

Traditionally we’ve always had a candlelit lobster salad on Christmas Eve. Everyone prepares their own, so it’s also an activity! It’s cold, so no cooking and little leftovers. But, this year it needs to be veggie, so I’m still thinking of something special but simple…

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/12/2023 19:06

We have our main Christmas meal and family presents as DH is a nationality that celebrates on the 24th.

The 25th is very chilled, picky food & pyjamas (which we put back on after we've been out for Christmas Day Parkrun).

BIossomtoes · 15/12/2023 19:07

Macaroni cheese. Lots of it.

Socialyawkward · 15/12/2023 19:07

Take away in my now family
When younger was always a beautiful buffet

Zanatdy · 15/12/2023 19:08

No special meals on Christmas Eve, generally something light in preparation for days ahead. No traditions either, but if I’m staying home for Christmas I will cook the meat on Christmas Eve
