Blackpool nurses jailed

CeeChynaa · 15/12/2023 12:12

Has anyone else seen this?

Two nurses were sedating stroke patients to an ‘inch of their life’ so that they could have peaceful shifts. The conversation between them on Whatsapp is scary! Crazy to think that people like this are working in healthcare and are surrounded by vulnerable people.

I don’t know much about sentencing but a 3 year sentence which one of them received is barely anything. After 1.5 years they’ll be back out on the streets.

Link below if anyone is interested.

Couldn't agree more. Hopefully the qualified nurse will be struck from the NMC register

Luxell934 · 15/12/2023 13:48

The text messages sent between those two nurses was shocking. Should have been done for attempted murder in my opinion. They admit dosing them "within an inch of their lives" and "I'm going to kill bed 5"..

Summonedbybees · 15/12/2023 13:50

Thank goodness a student nurse had the courage to whistle blow. I imagine this practice is more widespread than we think.

WhatsInStoreFor2024 · 15/12/2023 13:50

I think those sentences are appropriate tbh

They won't work in h/care again either

Simonsaidno · 15/12/2023 13:54

So 5 nurses from one place have gone to jail as a result of the students whistle blowing- out of how many nurses I wonder? It’s disgusting, but the worst thing is that it isn’t all that surprising.

puncheur · 15/12/2023 13:56

"Back out on the streets" makes it sound like they are predatory criminals who will be a danger to the public as soon as they are released. There's absolutely no evidence of that.

That nurse should be able to walk into any nursing job she wants when she qualifies! Good on her.

brainworms · 15/12/2023 14:02

They ARE a danger to the public. They were swearing vulnerable members of the public under their care.

Yes, they are criminals

CranfordScones · 15/12/2023 15:00

It makes me wonder how common this is elsewhere.

Blackpool Victoria Hospital isn't exactly famed for its good news stories. That's not the only police/official investigation.
More details here.
And here

The only slightly good thing to emerge is a positive outcome from whistleblowing.

Murder, sleaze and corruption on hospital ward plagued by controversy

Eight days after the police were called in, tragedy struck

Have them around for food and jollies when they are released then

Groovy48592747 · 15/12/2023 15:04

I'm glad they were jailed. Was one a HCA?

They've not quite on the level of Lucy Letby but abuse of power to vulnerable people/patients needs to be severely reprimanded and

Presumably the nurse will be struck off too. Either way don't think they will be working in healthcare again.

They are a danger to the public!

CormorantStrikesBack · 15/12/2023 15:06

I’m guessing the support worker got the shorter sentence as she wouldn’t have actually administered any drugs? The qualified nurse did that. But she’s guilty of egging the nurse on and generally encouraging it.

theyre lucky they didn’t end up on a murder charge to be honest. They could easily have killed somebody and possibly have done. If anyone elderly has died under their care how can anyone say for sure being drugged didn’t contribute. Hard to prove I guess.

Yes I agree. Well done on the student nurse for making the right decision after what she witnessed

I said ‘after 1.5 years they’ll be back out on the streets’ implying that they’ll only serve half of their sentence before they’re out living a free life. When they should still be in prison!

They really are a danger to the public but okay

That’s exactlY what they are. Predatory criminals who are a danger to the public. There was loads of evidence.

SurelySmartie · 15/12/2023 15:58

After 1.5 years they’ll be back out on the streets.

Yes but they won’t be near patients again fortunately,

Soporila · 15/12/2023 16:00

Well done to the student nurse, it can be hard to whistleblow especially as the new person.

The ones jailed are disgusting, such a short sentence too for abusing vulnerable people in their care.

Can you explain how exactly they will be a danger to the public on release? It’s not like they’ll ever work in healthcare again.

CormorantStrikesBack · 15/12/2023 17:50

I agree they’re not likely to be a danger to the public but there are two other good reasons for an adequate prison sentence.

Punishment and a deterrent to others

Gnomegnomegnome · 15/12/2023 17:57

Shocking! The student nurse was incredibly brave to whistleblow

jemenfous37 · 15/12/2023 19:51

@puncheur No danger to the public. Unless of course you are ill and vulnerable.
What a stupid statement. Of course they are dangerous

I've been a nurse in many different areas for over 20 years and I've never ever come across anything even remotely like this. Or heard of talk like this. This is totally horrendous, but rare.
