Laundry is not hard

Why do people make such a meal out of laundry? The machine literally does it for you. All you need to do is put the clothes in the machine - a 15 second job? I do 2/3 loads a day no problem with a large dog and twins.

We have separate machines but even when we don’t use the dryer it’s not difficult. Just maintain momentum. And folding is what a 2 min job? I put everyone’s clothes on the stairs for them to take up.

We’re a large family & I do all my in-laws washing too. Yest I rejoiced as I finally cleared the washing pile. It’ll be piled up again in no time! Machine on once or twice a day. We ditched the tumbler due to increasing cost of living. We bought several driers & have these set up round the house. As we both work long hours, kids are now responsible for taking dry stuff of driers & putting away. Anything that needs ironed has to be on ironing pile so I can get through one large pile as I don’t have time to iron clothes on demand. I also bought a fairly inexpensive steamer which has been a lifesaver for last minute things. System seems to be working, more so as my other half now knows how the machine works - they’d no interest in it before but now we’ve their parents washing too, they’d to step up & help.

Are you putting less than 10 items in the wash every time? The loads I do are far larger and more infrequent. I don't have the ability to do 3 loads per day because I'm not home. Folding takes closer to 20 minutes. We finally own a dryer since DG's grandmother moved into a care home and we got her old one, but it isn't quick. Before that, we were hanging to dry and there wasn't enough space in the house to do more than 1 load per day.

MsRosley · 17/12/2023 09:19

Reading about people who vacuum daily and doing 2-3 loads of laundry a day and it's no wonder energy is such an issue and the planet is fucked.

Genuine question - it is really impossible to dry clothes outside in the winter in the UK? Surely it doesn't rain every single day?

it rains a lot and is often cold (and still slightly damp) enough that they don’t really dry.

And going outside to hang your fucking washing out takes more than 2 minutes. Then you need to remember to take it in - and monitor the weather to make sure it doesn’t get rained on.

Sceptre86 · 17/12/2023 09:22

Good for you. I hate laundry. It isn't just putting it in the machine. It has to be sorted first, then put in the machine, then taken out and hung to dry, then folded and put away. Not everyone has a dryer and aren't they bad for the environment? Is it really inconceivable that people might hate chores you don't? We do at 7-8 loads a week. My kids are little yet so not able to put in their drawers to help me out, although two of them do put their underwear and socks away. When my youngest had reflux I had to wash out her sick clothes before putting them in the machine and the number of loads increased.

I clean my oven once a week as I do my kitchen cupboards so it really isn't a chore for me and doesn't take long. I am able to understand though that if people do it once a month or every few months it will be harder and take longer.

There are definitely parts of the UK where it is far too damp even if it's not raining. I've tried and after hours it just doesn't dry.

Charlize43 · 17/12/2023 09:25

Trying to keep a cat off clean sheets/laundry is not easy. I almost have to smuggle it back into the house and unless I fold and put away immediately she somehow seems to find it. The moment you put the pile down she's straight on it. She has a powerful swat and I hate to see her upset. She always wins!

Don't even get me started on trying to put fresh sheets on the bed. What an ordeal that is!

It can be damp rather than raining. I dont see the point in taking the time to hang it out when it won't actually dry and I'd need to hang it again in the house. I'd rather just hang it once indoors. And if I do hang outside I need to watch the weather in case it rains (I'm in Scotland so weather is often unpredictable)

Yes, if the temperature is above 10 degrees (that's my benchmark not a scientific one)

While your washing won't dry completely it will dry partially which means when you bring it in to dry it indoors they'll be less moisture.

I always watch the weather and if a dry day over 10, will try to do laundry and hang outside for the day.

cariadlet · 17/12/2023 09:31

Everyone has some bits of housework they hate and some that they don't mind.

I find doing the laundry easy because we only need to do a couple of loads a week and I've got a lovely ceiling airer to dry it on.
We had a twin tub growing up and I've never quite got over the wonder of how quick and easy it is with an automatic washing machine.

There are other jobs which I hate and get done far less often than they need doing eg cleaning the oven, cleaning skirting boards, cleaning the windows.

PostmansKnock · 17/12/2023 09:34

I dont see the point in taking the time to hang it out when it won't actually dry and I'd need to hang it again in the house.

Simply have pasta for breakfast and hang it out while it's boiling.

Then have wholewheat pasta about 4pm and it's getting dark as it takes longer to boil and bring and rehang it in while that's boiling. I don't know what all the fuss is about.

Bib1234 · 17/12/2023 09:38

This is just a smug post - I’m guessing your twins are a older kids considering you leave piles on the stairs

anyhoo, 6 kids, hubby and a farm and laundry is endless. I could do 4 plus loads a day and I’d be washing and drying and folding my entire day 😅

get over yourself

Howmanysleepsnow · 17/12/2023 09:45

My washing machine takes an hour and a quarter, after which I have to be able to put it in the dryer quickly before it all creases. The dryer then takes around 3-3.5 hours and I need to be able to get everything out and folded quickly before it creases. So the whole process requires me to time things so I’m home 1h15 minutes and 4h 15 minutes- 4h45 minutes after it starts, and not busy with anything else. I work 8-5 Monday- Friday, with kids who have clubs 7-8 3 days a week (so I’m home 5.30-6.30) plus on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Finding the right time slot is tricky and means I’m working my weekends around laundry schedules! Plus both machines are in the cellar so I can’t do folding etc whilst cooking.

Kattiekat · 17/12/2023 09:45

I agree. It’s not difficult. It is tedious though.

get a massive machine with a fast spin. It is a game changer!!

there are 5 of us. I have a 12kg machine with a 1600 spin and do around 5 loads always only on a Friday (takes all day but wfh Fridays). I don’t wash midweek unless there has been a bedtime accident.

for light dirt I have a 45 minute eco wash which spins at 800. Then I respin at 1600 so they take hardly any time at all to dry.

I don’t have a dryer. I use the radiators which are cast iron so dry very quickly. I also have a thing hanging from the kitchen ceiling.

uniform gets hung up straight out of washer which means no ironing and they are all dry by Monday morning.

WowOK · 17/12/2023 10:02

I HATE laundry. It doesn't matter how much I do the laundry bag is always FULL. if I empty it it's full again by the end of the day.

gemma19846 · 17/12/2023 10:04

Not everything can go in the dryer. Also sounds like you dont iron anything either??

Sorry, what is the point of this post?

I think it was fairly self-explanatory? What was the point of your post?

angielizzy1 · 17/12/2023 10:24

I hate washing. This doesn't mean it's difficult but it is incredibly relentless. It's impossible to empty the washing basket as it seems as soon as I get to the bottom of it, I turn around and it's full to the brim with washing that had appeared from no where.
We can't get it dry without using the tumble dryer and I can't be out when it's on so it can be difficult to find a time when someone will be in for long enough.
I hate loading and unloading the dishwasher for similar reason. I've no idea how we use so much crockery etc that we can't seem to get through the pile.

my sincere apologies for annoying you!!

Stormyweathr · 17/12/2023 10:29

I am with you on this
There is two of us I do one wash a day to wash whatever clothes we wear the day before, normally they go on a quick wash, they go on a clothes maid and come off the next day, hung up straight away, takes a few minutes

bedding once a week, if it’s dry it goes on the line if not in the dryer

towels twice a week - again on the line or in the dryer

I don’t understand how my sister spends a whole day ‘doing washing’

Do you wash clothes after one wear? How is two sets of outfits a full load?

My stuff doesn't dry in a day - what am I doing wrong?

Stormyweathr · 17/12/2023 10:33

Oh and we don’t have a washing basket dirty clothes go straight into the machine

Stormyweathr · 17/12/2023 10:36

@rorret two set of clothes plus socks and underwear on a quick wash once a day it’s a eco wash as well so uses half the water and I don’t need a lot of detergent

I also have a heated clothes maid so I put that on for a few hours clothes dry in no time
