To cry? Cat pissed on the bed while I was sleeping!

QuestionableMouse · 15/12/2023 08:10

Woke up and thought I'd wet myself for a second - bed was wet right through! Put the light on and realised my boy cat has pissed in the bed. It's gone right through the duvet to the sheets and mattress protecter.

I feel like utter crap with some sort of bug and all I want to do is cry! Got some bedding in now, will get me in the shower shortly too (because I was wet too!)!

I'm totally fed up with him doing it - this is the third time now! 🙁🙁

I think the recommendation for number of litter trays is one per cat and then an extra one - if you have space, might be worth adding another to see if that helps. I have 2 cats and one of them went through a phase of peeing in my laundry basket but a third litter tray resolved the issue.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 15/12/2023 09:24

Make up a spray of vinegar to spray on your mateess then let it dry. Should stop him smelling his own pee.

I have 1 fussy litter tray cat, but if she's not happy she tends to perch on the edge of the litter tray and pee on the floor.

5PurpleDinosaurs · 15/12/2023 09:25

Yes our newish rescue pees if her kitty litter is not pristine. It's a total bugger. She now has 2 to herself (our other cat has one) and I have to clean it twice a day. So you might just have to be rigorous about the cleaning... we sometimes forget and then find she has peed on the kitty litter bag itself.

And yes do take him to the vet just in case.

sweetpickle23 · 15/12/2023 09:29

Bless you OP.

He'll stop doing it once he's neutered- 9 months is very old for a neuter (should normally be around 4-5 months) so it's probably just hormones.

Hope you get the smell out and manage to get some rest!

Mynaddmawr · 15/12/2023 09:30

Oh thats horrid, I feel your pain! Great you've got simple solution because that does have the enzymes to completely break down the bacteria. And great that he's got a choice of two trays usually! Hopefully just a one off, but I would keep him out of the bedroom at least for a while, as it will be hard to remove completely from your mattress 😔 they've got very keen noses! My two were very accustomed to sleeping in our bedroom, we had to start shutting them downstairs when the baby arrived, they did stop crying eventually so he will get used to it.

JamieKnows · 15/12/2023 10:49

"You need to take your cat to the vets because that is highly unusual cat behaviour."

No it isn't.

CalistoNoSolo · 15/12/2023 10:53

That's utterly vile OP, but then cats are vile fuckers and this kind of disgusting behaviour comes with the territory.

AlltheFs · 15/12/2023 10:54

My female kitten did this before she was neutered- cost us over £2k in replacement mattress and bedding.

She grew out of it after neutering though.

Excited101 · 15/12/2023 10:57

Once he’s neutered (well done for getting that sorted!) he’ll be able to go out and that should help too. But yes, an extra litter tray if he’s fussy and maybe a waterproof protector for your mattress?
cats can breed from 16 weeks old- even with parents/siblings so neutering ideally would be done just before then. It’s great you’ve been able to keep him in until he’s done.

We have a lot of cats, several disabled. One is an elderly tripod and once in a while he will pee on the bed. Not often, but it was a nightmare when it happened. We bought a big fleece throw from amazon that's waterproof. That goes over our bed, then a light overblanket is over that. The light overblanket is dead easy to throw in the wash is it gets hairy or puked iron, and is light enough to be put back on the bed wet and drys in no time. The waterproof throw underneath is the insurance policy in case our old tripod were to pee on the bed and would protect everything underneath. It's soul destroying when they do this, and sometimes they do just do weird stuff without some big illness or stress. I think teenage cats and elderly cats (and maine coons!) are the worst. Anyway - try a waterproof throw alongside whatever else you do as at least that way your bed is safe from being soaked while you try to sort him out.

Dozycuntlaters · 15/12/2023 11:03

My cat did exactly the same to me - twice! I too thought I had wet myself but oh no, she got on the bed, got on me then had a piss. No idea why she did it. I stripped the bed, got some bicarb of soda on there and aired the mattress for a few hours. I did have to buy a new duvet though.....well 2 new duvets. That was about four years ago, and she hasnt done it since so god knows what she was thinking.

Shrammed · 15/12/2023 11:04

I'd try and move second litter tray so he does have access to it at night in future - and try something like BioKitty Clumping Cat Litter, Highly Absorbent Natural Mineral Bentonite Cat Sand Litter, Unscented Long Lasting Odour - I try and have some in for events when I can't do litter as frequently.

Also get some Odour Remover/ Enzymatic spray - amazon had load that will destroy cat pee smell else it will keep happening as he'll smell the urine.

Cat also try some calm calming plug ins - in case he is stressed.

Oh that's a good point. We had a waterproof also for when our last cat became very ill with cancer. One of our dogs became incontinent and we used dog nappies for her (gamechanger) but for our cat the smallest available were too small. So we ended up modifying premie baby nappies for her- just made a little hole for her tail.

I say only because although it may not apply to the OP someone may find that useful.

HamsterBanana · 15/12/2023 11:37

You need to make sure the scent is gone 100 percent otherwise they'll keep remarking it.
I would buy new bedding unfortunately.

GasPanic · 15/12/2023 11:43

Seems to me you have a choice between a pissed on bed occasionally or a cat that sleeps outside.

If you don't want the bed wet then you should have kept the cat out of the bedroom after the first incident.

Incident 1, sympathy. Incident 3, stupidity.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 15/12/2023 11:54

Yeah you’ve got yourself a fussy one there, clean tray and the right substrate or I’ll wee on the bed.

Classic behaviour if there is something not quite right with the tray.

AllIsWellish · 15/12/2023 12:08

I feel your pain, mine once peed all up my back while I was asleep. Also did the same to ds3

He's not done it since being done, I did find him peeing on the windowsil this morning though as the window was shut and he's not a fan of weeing in the litter trey

This might be too late for you now, as you already have it soaking. But in case there's a next time (hope not!!).There's a service called Laundry Heap that will collect from your door, wash and dry, and deliver back in a few days. We used it all the time when we were nursing a dying relative at home for several months, and as you can imagine, there was sooooo much laundry!
It's a good service, and not prohibitively expensive. You might also find you have local companies offering the same.
I'm so sorry this happened to you, it's bad enough being in bed ill, without all this extra mess. Get well soon 💐

Thanks for the tip - unfortunately I need the duvet back on the bed tonight or I'll be sleeping under a thin single and a couple of blankets!

He will be an inside cat only - it's not safe or possible for him to go out (busy roads, first floor flat).

He's so funny honestly - if I put his food in the wrong spot he'll walk past it making it plainly clear he's starving but how can he possibly eat when his food is Wrong?! He also steals my socks and hides them 🤣

Here he is a couple of nights ago, sleeping on the radiator (wasn't even on!) because none of the four cat beds is good enough! 🤷🤣

Oh he’s a stunning little chap! You can tell he’s a late neuter he has cheek pouches already.

HandyLittleGadget · 15/12/2023 14:44

QuestionableMouse · 15/12/2023 08:45

I do have two trays but had closed the kitchen door last night so the other one was unavailable to him!

I also think that he's not keen on the litter I have atm - it's clay and was a sub on my grocery shop rather than the paper I normally use!

Cats hate dirty litter trays. Your cat had access to one, which had crap in it.

I really wanted to get him early but the vets I use have had a couple of vets retire/leave and it's just been impossible to get him in! Even routine appointments are getting pushed back 🙁

It had one poo in, which was his. It usually gets cleaned every day but I was really unwell last night and it just didn't happen. The one in the kitchen was clean and I don't usually close the kitchen door (but it was so cold last night!)
