To think snotty, coughing people should wear masks?

On the train or other forms of public transport. In waiting rooms etc. People coughing with half-hearted hands held up to their mouths. Blowing their noses with abandon. None of them wearing masks, just shedding their viruses into closed spaces.

Isn't it just common decency, after we went through a global pandemic, to try to protect those around you? It's super normal to wear a mask in parts of Asia if you are unwell to reduce the risk of your germs spreading to your fellow humans.

So what? Your husband isn't the only immunosuppressed person in the world. If you can't give two shits about mask-wearing that's your issue. I have a lot of immunosuppressed patients and elderly relatives I do give two shits about.

If you're so keen on mask wearing, knock yourself out! Nothing's stopping you. But you don't get to stamp your feet and demand that everyone else accedes to your desire for mass mask wearing. Honestly, the pouting and emotional blackmail on this both thread and the one about teacher demanding a child take a Covid test make me realise how many people are still stuck in 2020 and it is really dispiriting. Sometimes I wish all the Covid hysterics would just form their own commune where they can complain and virtue signal to their hearts content : it would soon disintegrate as there would be different levels of fanaticism with the most fanatical calling the least 'covidiots'.

I wear a mask now if I've got a cold and have to be around people, e.g. at work. I think it's polite.
And here's a recent source for the effectiveness of masking: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0271517

What I want to point out about that is that their best estimate of the effect is an 11% reduction in transmission, 95% confidence interval goes to 19.4% reduction. So that means at least 80% of the risk of transmission is still there. I know a lot of those primary studies and not all of them are double masking (both healthy & sick wearing masks). Other meta-analyses (dating from 2020) concluded about 17% reduction if both parties masked, but with wider confidence intervals (down to only 0% protective).

I mean sure, hope for masks, but they aren't amazingly protective, don't get upset if people don't bother. > 80% of the risk of transmission is almost certainly still there. If you really don't want to catch something, keep 2 metres away.

Covid is still rife, but it's hardly the only winter bug out there. Plenty of viruses are strong enough to knock a frail, elderly person off their feet. Why so upset by the suggestion that containing your germs would be the decent thing to do? It's a little fragile to feel emotionally blackmailed by a simple suggestion, especially if you do not agree with or believe in the point.

@Floofydawg

its not joyless to want people to sneeze or cough into their elbow rather than spray everywhere as some people do.

RobertaFirmino · 14/12/2023 17:29

I do wear a mask if I have to go out and have a cold etc. Sometimes, leaving the house when ill is unavoidable and I'd hate to pass anything on.

Beezknees · 14/12/2023 17:32

I'm never wearing a mask again. Sorry. They make me feel claustrophobic. I would have the decency to at least cough into my arm though.

I think you need to get a grip OP.

All this does is line the pockets of mask producers (and Amazon) and create constant dramatics by people getting on their high horse every time someone coughs or sneezes in public.

You realise it’s not 2020 anymore right?

Philomenacunk1 · 14/12/2023 18:34

Oh god not this again! People really need to get over their germophobia and start living their lives.

WhatsInStoreFor2024 · 14/12/2023 18:40

Er no!

I will NEVER wear a mask again! Soz

Floofydawg · 14/12/2023 18:44

Bloke on train the other day was quite funny actually. Looked at me in disgust as I coughed (into a tissue) and blew my nose. Was a packed train but he just stood up and moved. 3 hour journey with two seats to myself - winner winner.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 14/12/2023 18:53

Blowing their noses with abandon

What is blowing your nose with abandon? How do you want someone to blow their nose on a train? And wearing a mask wouldn't prevent this, you have to take the mask off to blow your nose.

Floofydawg · 14/12/2023 18:57

@CrispsandCheeseSandwich perhaps they should just let the snot dribble down their faces. Under their masks, of course.

Maybe OP wants them to hawk it up onto the train floor. But in a measured way, obv. Like decent people.

Floofydawg · 14/12/2023 19:09

😂😂

Kazzyhoward · 14/12/2023 19:12

YANBU, but sadly, no one cares anymore. Even our local hospital oncology department don't have a box of masks at the entrance anymore, and that's where the most vulnerable people will be inside.

Sugarfish · 14/12/2023 19:12

You’re free to wear a mask if you want but it’s not up to the rest of the world to manage your triggers

The odd virus every now and then isn’t that bad anyway. My immune system was shocking after lockdown.

BlowingAway · 14/12/2023 19:13

I wish they would wear a mask if ill, yes.

HamstersAreMyLife · 14/12/2023 19:17

I hate inflicting my germs on others but if I have a cold and need to go into the office like I have at the moment I can't manage wearing a mask. Until now I've had the luxury of being encouraged to stay off if unwell but we are moving to more office attendance in the new year so this will change. Before the pandemic I used to go in very very ill but will definitely be more wary in future and will call in sick more often. I've moved out of a frontline role now so I will feel relatively able to call in sick now which I never could in the past

myhusbandwantsadog · 14/12/2023 19:28

herbygarden · 14/12/2023 08:53

Personally as an asthmatic, whenever I get any cold/cough thing I tend to cough endlessly for weeks after, it's so draining, I cough until I'm sick/wet myself/can't sleep. The coughing goes on for weeks after the main cold. When I wear a mask it affects my asthma more and makes me dizzy and really light headed, I have almost fainted wearing one. It wouldn't be practical for me! If I had Covid I would stay home until clear but otherwise I cannot mask up any longer, it would be months out of my year!

Yeah same, and if my asthma is particularly bad putting on a mask can trigger an asthma attack. I've ended up blue lighted to A&E as a result. While I wore a mask quite 'happily' through most of the pandemic, it's ironic that now while I'm at my most annoying to society I can't. That said, I'm not infectious.

Aroundthewaygirl · 14/12/2023 19:30

I wear one when I am sick/have a cough. It would be nice if others would too but most wont.
