To think snotty, coughing people should wear masks?

On the train or other forms of public transport. In waiting rooms etc. People coughing with half-hearted hands held up to their mouths. Blowing their noses with abandon. None of them wearing masks, just shedding their viruses into closed spaces.

Isn't it just common decency, after we went through a global pandemic, to try to protect those around you? It's super normal to wear a mask in parts of Asia if you are unwell to reduce the risk of your germs spreading to your fellow humans.

Maybe ,but its completely unenforceable

RiderofRohan · 14/12/2023 09:20

Sirzy · 14/12/2023 09:10

If you’re concerned then maybe you should wear a mask when out in public?

Yes, I do now in closed spaces given the number of coughs around, but this is not as effective as the shedder/sick person wearing a mask. I honestly thought we all knew all this post-covid. Maybe a lack of education on a national level?

No no no no no. I cough quite a lot as an asthmatic and am already sick of people who’ve been emboldened to treat me like a pariah just because I cough! I was coughing a bit after eating at work the other day and my colleague turned to me and said “I hope you don’t have covid” and it was really fucking rude. No “are you ok?” Just straight to accusation. We will get sick over winter it is normal, be fucking nice to each other and don’t assume that everyone coughing is an inconsiderate asshole out to get you!

as a personal bugbear with masks, because of the strong inhaled steroids I take I’m quite at risk for oral thrush and it has never been so bad as the time masks were mandatory. It was awful and I will not wear one again!

MiddleagedBeachbum · 14/12/2023 08:55

Don’t be ridiculous.

Masks are awful for your health, will only make you iller for longer.

Don't be ridiculous! Masks are not bad for your health 😂

ElevenSeven · 14/12/2023 09:37

Lived in Asia for a long time. Yes, they wear them.

They still all get coughs and colds.

RedPony1 · 14/12/2023 09:39

Nah sod that. Not remotely interested in ever wearing a mask again.

If i have a cold it doesn't make me less busy. i still have live my life, go to work, go food shopping, do my horses twice a day. i'm clean, i dispose of my tissues properly and i have always used hand sanitiser when i have a cold even pre covid.

You also won't ever catch me on public transport anyway though.

brunettemic · 14/12/2023 09:40

How do you blow your nose with a mask on…?

Mummymn · 14/12/2023 09:41

In theory yes but I've recently had an awful cough and cold. Cold cleared up quickly but a month later my chest is still affected.

Firstly I can't stay inside for over a month, I have stuff to do and I'm not poorly now.

Secondly I can't wear a mask I find it makes it really hard to breathe with my chesty cough and then I panic.

I had to hold my tongue to the man who literally jumped out of my way because I coughed once. We were not that close but you'd think I should be locked up the look he gave me. The cold air had got to me and I couldn't stiffle it.

Ambertonix · 14/12/2023 09:46

No, im sorry but never again will i wear a mask. If im ill i will stay home just like we did in the 'good old days' before the world went to sh*t but other than that im living my life with a good supply of tissues in my pocket.

LylaLee · 14/12/2023 09:49

Everanewbie · 14/12/2023 09:14

They also consider slurping food polite, and pouring yourself a drink is considered impolite. Just because Japanese people think or do something, it doesn't make it right.

Wtf

I just pointed out a place in the world where it is standard behaviour.

How does that get to 'she worships Japan' in your mind?!?!

Neriah · 14/12/2023 09:54

If your are that bothered, you wear a mask.

cezannesapple · 14/12/2023 09:54

Catza · 14/12/2023 08:47

How did you feel about this before the pandemic?

What’s that got to do with anything? We should have learnt something by now and the very strong scientific evidence is that masks work. It would be lovely if people weren’t so selfish and thought of other people.

RiderofRohan · 14/12/2023 09:55

Neriah · 14/12/2023 09:54

If your are that bothered, you wear a mask.

But I'm not shedding germs. See above response

Yes!! I wish we were more considerate like many Asian countries are

Passingthethyme · 14/12/2023 09:58

Neriah · 14/12/2023 09:54

Erm, it makes more sense for the sick person to wear it does it not?! Hmm

Everanewbie · 14/12/2023 09:58

Well you're responding to a thread where the OP suggests mask wearing for people with colds. You comment notes that this is common practice in Japan and considered polite. I, reasonably I think, took this comment to mean that you endorse this custom. Why else would you write it? Otherwise its just a random comment.

XlemonX · 14/12/2023 09:58

I totally agree. Fine if not mask but Most people I come across doesnt even have a decency to cough in their arms!!! I think thats so inconsiderate especially in an isolated space full of people! Or walking past your face and just cough right at you!

i was always told to at least cover my mouth when coughing in public places and to never use my hands as your hands get full of germs after touching and spreading it everywhere. So always in school and at home i was raised to cough in your arm!!!

Stephy1024 · 14/12/2023 09:59

If you're that worried about other people's germs then you can wear the mask 🤷‍♀️.

XlemonX · 14/12/2023 10:04

Eh yes but you just said you had an awful cold so for the man to react and get a bit frightened of your cough would be normal? I wouldnt want to give it to anybody else if it was a terrible cold and some people have lowered immunsystem so he might get it even worse than you.
I dont see anything wrong with him reacting tbh, especially now after a global pandemic

Itneverrainsitpissesitdown · 14/12/2023 10:09

Knowing how ill I was when I ended up with pneumonia following covid, and how scared I was, then yes, I do panic when someone comes near me coughing like that.

Since I became so ill it has made me see it in a whole new perspective.
I always steer clear of anyone whenever I become unwell, as you just never know what underlying health issues they might have.

Itneverrainsitpissesitdown · 14/12/2023 10:12

Flopsythebunny · 14/12/2023 09:35

Don't be ridiculous! Masks are not bad for your health 😂

Maybe not, but some people struggle to breathe through them due to various reasons - asthma, panic disorder.
I have both the above and honestly felt like I was suffocating when wearing one.

LylaLee · 14/12/2023 10:16

Everanewbie · 14/12/2023 09:58

Yes. I endorse the custom.

Your weird response was 'well Japanese people slurp their food!!!!' etc.

So saying 'Japan isn't perfect'.

By highlighting one good thing somewhere in the world does one is not wholesale endorsing every aspect of that culture.

Hope that helps.

Caerulea · 14/12/2023 10:17

Well my Dr's surgery is currently on emergency only appts, essentially shutdown cos they've all got covid. Definitely think masks in surgeries would be a good idea at the very least

Desecratedcoconut · 14/12/2023 10:17

You really get the feeling that some people miss the highly regulated covid rules era and the homogeneous behaviour of a fearful population.

I think a society is easier to live in when the shoulds are kept to a minimum.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 14/12/2023 08:55

That’s complete nonsense.
